Doing a Good Turn REALLY does pay

A funny thing happened to me in Marks and Spencer's food hall on Wednesday.

In the checkout queue I had my usual large amount of food and a smart young man in a suit came and stood behind me with one sandwich (it was lunchtime).

I asked him if he'd like to go in front of me which he did.

When it was my turn the checkout assistant told me that the young man had paid for his sandwich (costing £2) with a £10 note and had only taken £3 change, saying to her "Please give the lady behind me £5 off her bill"

She couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it, but I took the £5

I told some m/netters this story yesterday at a lunch meeting and they'd never heard of such a thing either?

And I found £1 in the gym car park on Tuesday so at this rate I'll soon be a millionaire

yep, helping toehrs does pay. Many years ago I helped a family with an ill chap near us. They were mega rich but had no family, but I never expected £1k in the will 'to help with my education' (paid OU fees). MIL was left a house for a ridiculously low price (whatever she sold her terraced house for- this was a posh bungalow) for helping to clean some chaps house for years.

Bit of a deviation but when I was a student a pile of us were in a cafe, talking about how skint we were and earnestly debating how much you would get if you sold your spare kidney/lung etc. We got up to pay and the bloke at the next table had paid our bill. It was 20 years ago and I've never forgotten that man's gesture - Little acts of kindness make a big difference to people's lives!

Dh is always helping people but sadly no reward so far. He fought off a mugger who attacked a woman at a cashpoint, took charge and gave first aid to a woman who had been bitten by a dog on the underground (while underground staff stood around not knowing what to do - and the first aid kit didn't have any scissors for the bandages).

When his best friend and he were set on by a gang for stepping in to protect two girls his mate was awarded money from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme but dh wasn't due to the guy who attacked him being 20, bizarrely.

I'm very proud of him, though.

That is so sweet! Nice things do happen...

Toothache - that is MAD! I cannot believe that someone could lose £3,800. I have occasionally taken my rent out in cash and I am so paranoid on the way to pay it in I am clutching my bag and walking double speed!

The reason insurance premiums go up all the time are because unscrupulous people don't hand up money that they find saying "well the insurance will pay it out". Its a mad world. Well done toothache for having the temerity to hand up the money.

Weesaidie - I know! Mental eh?!

Chink - My DH didn't speak to me for a couple of hours after she left..... but he knew it was the right thing to do. He just didn't want to do the right thing! It would have paid off our car!

What a great story Cam. When my Dad was visting me he found an envelope with £300 in it. He handed it in to the police station and it turned out it was the takings from a charity shop. They were stunned to get the money returned. The shop manager visited our house and promised a small gift for ds and dd but it never came. However, he did receive a lovely thank you letter. I think it's great when a good turn is rewarded albeit it in a small way.
