I think it's partly an age thing. Now that ds has started at secondary and is wearing expensive uniform that needs proper ironing, it's got to be off the moment he gets in.

Dd is still in cheapo gingham dresses which are dirty when she gets home anyway, and just get dirtier as the spaghetti hoops get rubbed in.

dinosaur · 06/09/2005 22:03

No because it's usually filthy anyway, so no point dirtying another set of clothes.

roisin · 06/09/2005 22:07

DS's only get changed if they are going out to something - Beavers or Youth Club or something.

They have 5 shirts, 2 pr trousers & 2 sweatshirts each, so can just about make it through the week with those, if I don't have time to wash and iron.

I must confess I give slightly grubby sweatshirts a rub with a baby-wipe to make them do another day!

So far I have been making DS change while he has been on half days. I will be making him change on the days I am not working but will not be sending a change of clothes to the childminder and by the time I collect him at 5.30 doubt I will bother changing him for 1.5 hours before bathtime. But if a sweatshirt looks serviceable will make him take it off before he eats.

Roisin I did that with DS's shorts. Because its September I only bought him one pair of shorts but its so hot here I wanted to eek another day out of them. Actually he's the only boy in the class in shorts and they were only £1.75 (half price) in Asda and I am sure they will fit next summer.

aloha · 06/09/2005 22:21

I did as a kid - but then I didn't have uniform until 11. It was vital part of shedding school skin and relaxing at home. Used to do it at work too - off with work clothes, on with home clothes. V imp psychologically for me. Mind you, I hated school!

hoppybird · 06/09/2005 22:25

My ds had a nursery uniform consisting of a polo shirt and tracksuit. He went five mornings a week. and he would change out of it as soon as he got home. I certainly didn't have a fresh uniform for him every day - it would be washed only when it got dirty (ie playdoh, paint, suncream).

This usually meant he'd have at most 3 fresh shirts a week, and the tracksuit would have one wash mid-week. Underwear and socks obviously daily changed, socks sometimes twice-daily.

As for his own clothes in the evening: t-shirts last 2 days at the most, as they tend to suffer from dinner and staleness. Shorts tend to last a bit longer and he has special gardening trousers (which he recognises as such) remain mucky for a week - what on earth would be the point of putting on a fresh pair every day for him get covered in dust/sand/grass stains.

He's always had a policy of changing into his at-home shorts (or slob shorts, as calls them) when he gets home from anywhere, same as his daddy, who wears casual to work (in an office) but still gets changed when he gets home.

He's starting school tomorrow and I shall follow the same policy (ie own clothes when he gets home). But he'll probably get fresh shirts every day, as they're the 'grown up' kind, which get grubby looking around the collar and cuffs easily.

pootlepod · 06/09/2005 22:37

When I was at school, we only had 2 uniforms so changed on a Tues/Wed and Friday. Don't think we changed unless we were going somewhere. My mum only cooked spaghetti bolognaise on Wed/Fri nights!

Caligula · 06/09/2005 22:39

Yes if it's still clean and wearable the next day. (Incredibly, it sometimes is.)

QueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2005 22:45

DH also gets changed when he gets home from work - and all he wears to work is a polo shirt and trousers (of his choosing!).

Like others have said it's part of the 'unwind' process IMO.

Carla · 06/09/2005 22:47

No, not unless they absolutely insist. In the bath, uniform on 'quick wash', in the dryer, and ready for school the next morning.

I can't do that 'worn it the day before, so it's clean' thing.

Tortington · 06/09/2005 23:55

i can't iron three uniforms and get miself ready for work in a morning and am not ironing at night - everynight

twice a week it gets washed unless there was a happening with mud

QueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2005 23:58

carla - what time do you child(ren?) get home from school, and what time do they go to bed?

I'll be washing uniform once a week as we bought enough to last him for most of the week - thus relieving the 'pressure' from me to wash everyday (and seems like a waste of electricty to put the washer on for one small trousers, jersey and polo shirt!).

serenity · 07/09/2005 00:03

They get changed if they're going to wear the same uniform the next day, so every other day really. Strangely enough if they still have their uniform on at dinner, it will get covered - 'home' clothes are usually fine. It's a conspiracy!

nightowl · 07/09/2005 03:22

ds does change as of going back today because this year ive bought shirts instead of polo shirts and i dont want them covered in stains (he always comes back filthy anyway but im trying to limit the damage). ive got five of everything, ready on a sunday. we dont ever wear anything more than once (no i lie, only my jeans). i quite often put clothes into the wash basket when they are still clean just because they have been worn for a couple of hours and even as i do it i think "this is so silly, they arent even dirty" but i cant seem to stop myself!!

Nightynight · 07/09/2005 08:04

cod
your last comment is rather offensive actually.

it is a relatively modern thing to feel that outer clothes should be changed every day.

dinosaur · 09/09/2005 12:56

It's also relatively modern that we should wash our bodies on a regular basis and use anti-perspirant. But I think I'll accept the benefits of modernity on this one!

fairydust · 09/09/2005 12:57

dd changed out of her uniform at present as she's only at nursery for 2 1/2 in a morning.

scotlou · 09/09/2005 13:05

If he's going out to play, then he'll change. (Except nights he's at after school club).
If as weatshirt of pair of trousers is not obviously grubby, I try to get another day out of them. But clean polo shirt and underwear every day.
When I went to school I wore the same school skirt and jumper all week - and I bet I wasn't the only one!

Cam · 09/09/2005 13:09

Yes my dd does get changed every day after school and her school kilts are worn more than once. They're kept clean at school because they change into tracksuits to play outside at break.

mumbee · 09/09/2005 13:09

Yes they do for 2 reasons
1 i do not like my babies in school uniform.
2 They need to feel relax and feel they are away form school.

The keep the polo shirts just change skirts/trousers which they then wear mon-thurs and clean on friday for Friday Club.

School trousers.skirts are then changed every other day and polo shirts every day, does not make the washing any worse. I use to change out of wrok clothes for the evening

Aero · 09/09/2005 13:10

Yes - Ds1 because he wants to.......dd does it under duress because I want her to be able to wear it for more than one day!
