Well Done!!! I lived without a tv as a teenager and it didnt do me any harm, it was quite weird going into other peoples houses and seeing them all glued round it actually.

I don't think I will be far behind you!! DH keeps going on about getting a freeview box, whilst I am keen to ditch the tv altogether. Saying that, I might be tempted to hang on to the portable in our bedroom.

Not sure how to cope without Stenders and Corrie though.............

Gobbledigook · 27/08/2005 13:48

I don't think there's anything shallow about watching the TV - it's not all mindless rubbish, it can be very educational too - for kids as well as adults.

For example, at 2 yrs old my ds2 can count to five in Spanish, can say hello, goodbye, open, close, up, down, delicious and numerous other things in Spanish - all courtesy of Dora the Explorer.

And what's wrong with slobbing out every now and then to watch something purely for entertainment value?

TV has it's uses but it's very easy to turn it off and go out if you think you are using too much of it.

Entirely your decision of course - not being critical - just hate the way TV is portrayed as 'the devils work'!!

QueenEagle · 27/08/2005 14:03

If you are keeping your tv for dvd's and videos, you have to do something to your tv to render it impossible to get a picture. Then you can't be accused of watching it when you haven't.

fairydust · 27/08/2005 14:08

personally think you mad -

Heathcliffscathy · 27/08/2005 14:09

giraffeski well done. wish we had the guts to tbh. think it is insidious influence, not just on ds but us too...the evenings are eaten up by it....

but.............

dh loves cricket and rugby and i love docs and films so..

filled with admiration tho.

Oh, I see - sounds like a sensible move then

Eaney · 27/08/2005 14:54

I'm with gobbledigook. TV is wonderfull. I simply couldn't live without it. I honestly think it kept me sane growing up in a very isolated community. It's like a much loved friend. I don't tend to watch the wallpaper type of TV but really enjoy a bit of trash from time to time.

Would you ditch your computer for similar reasons? Cbeebies is online if you ever get tempted.

Anyway good luck with your decision.

weesaidie · 27/08/2005 15:13

Good luck.

I wouldn't, I enjoy the good stuff (ie Green Wing, Extras, etc) and I try to turn it off occasionally!

Agree with GDG. But that is just me, if you don't want it then get rid of it!

I don't watch much TV and it's on all the time in here but I very much doubt I would be able to live long without it.

Well done and good luck.

Go, girl, go! We haven't had proper television for 13 years, but have a telly that we can watch DVD's and videos on, but cannot receive any 'tv' as such (no license required). As far as I can tell, it has only been a positive thing.

expatinscotland · 27/08/2005 22:13

I lived without it for about a year. It sucked. I missed it.

Miaou · 27/08/2005 22:45

dh and I didn't have a tv for two years when we were first married. We contemplated not having one when we moved to Scotland, but got it out when sept 11th happened 3 months after we arrived, and it never went away again. Unfortunately dh is not a discriminating viewer - he puts it on at 7.30am in the morning and turns it off when he goes to bed at night! It drives me mad sometimes, though mostly I ignore it. Hopefully when he is working again I will be able to hear myself think without wall-to-wall fishing programmes blaring away in the background
