Good for you!!!!!

Wish I had the guts to do this.

emmatmg · 27/08/2005 22:58

Mad, I tell you....quite mad!

caligula · 27/08/2005 22:59

I'd never ditch the TV. It's the only thing that occasionally gets me away from Mumsnet.

It will be interesting to see how you get on giraffeski! I grew up with no tv and we never watch it in UK (although there is a tiny one from my uni days lol that dd sometimes watches videos on.)
We find we're too busy doing other stuff tbh.

(Mind you,in Turkey where I have a much more restricted likfe,I do like VH1 and mad old Turkish films to practice my language skills!)

FeelingOld · 28/08/2005 10:01

We do not watch it much, never switch it on unless there is something I really want to watch, but could not get rid of it altogether.
I also think that the tv can be a useful learning tool as long as it's the correct programmes and in moderation.
Good luck to you, I hope your dd is not too upset by your decision.

I'm with Cod, there's nothing like a cold, rainy and dark winer without a TV (tried it in the past and by January I was opening my wrists )

Chandra · 28/08/2005 10:16

winer? winter

well done! we got a lot of interest from the TV liscensing co when we didn't have a TVn - letters every week virtually, they just didn't believe us! Once a friend left his TV with us until his girlfriend could pick it up, and I was scared they'd come round and say they'd caught us (even though it was by the front door and covered in dust). And I was always scared when we watched DVDs that they just would not believe us!

Chandra · 28/08/2005 13:06

Don't worry about having a TV at home, you can have it, they can only trace them when they are on.

Roobie · 28/08/2005 14:39

I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of people who say they grew up without a TV. My parents put ours away when I was 12 as they were fed up with all the arguments and having to stop us watching "unsuitable" programmes - they only got it out again when both my sis and I were at Uni. I did feel like the weird kid at school though and really hated telling people we didn't have a TV.

FairyMum · 28/08/2005 14:58

Good luck. I personally think there is a lot of good telly too. We watch very little, but there are some good series and films on too.

sasa15 · 28/08/2005 15:04

we did ditch ours....I mean we have it but we haven't bought a cable yet...so can't see any tv at all....
it feel good at the moment as...is summer here and we are always out...but I think i will miss it on winter...tv overhere is crap anyway...
but we do have dvd player...and a big collection of dvd...internet...and read the paper at work everyday....

I think is great at the moment...

good choice!!!!

Oh Giraffski I envy you! After 6 years without a telly DH became determined to have one... well, technically we have a tv card in the computer, but it means that we can now get (rather fuzzy) pictures of terrestrial channels.

I hate it. Even though I often sit down with DH for 1/2 hour in the evneings to watch something, and DS1 now gets to see Thunderbirds (which he loves), and I know it's good for the kids to be in touch with their culture & they can even learn things (cbbc)... I still wish it would go. I HATE the adverts. I hate the snippy short attention span camera work, the mindless bits we try to avoid but can't help but pass over. The way it dominates the atmosphere in the room. How easy it is to plonk down in front of it when, really, I have 200 other things I should be doing. TV used to be a treat when we went on holiday or to some1 else's house, no more. DS1 def. has worse behavior after he's been watching a few hours. Even though I am limiting the tv time to just 2 hours before 6pm on holiday days (and no tv before 6pm otherwise). When the license comes up for renewal next year I'd love to get rid of the tv-card... but even if DH is amenable, I know the kids would go into full revolt, so I think we're stuck with it for the long term.

fqueenzebra · 28/08/2005 16:02

There was a lady on radio the other day advocating that kids shouldn't have more than 2 hours "screen" time each day: that's 2 hours total combined watching dvd's/playing computer games/watching tv. Even I'm not that puritanical!
