Dh has the possibility of a job up in East Kilbride and I am loooking for information about the area. Been told he could commute from glasgow or edinburgh, think i would prefer edinburgh. What are the house prices like? what are the schools like? where is a nice area? are people friendly?

Any info at all would be great- big decision to make!

Hi alexmum,

Edinburgh is pretty expensive, esp the 'nice' parts. Don't know much about Glasgow but I believe that it has become expensive too. For Edinburgh, look at this site
As for nice areas, depends what you're looking for ie suburban or trendy city centre. Also whether you're wanting you children to go to the local school. If you let me know what sort of place you're looking for, I'll do my best to help if I can. Also, if you're planning to commute to East Kilbride you might want to consider which side of Edinburgh you look at as your dh may not want to commute across Edinburgh as well as between Edinburgh and East Kilbride.
And yes, of course the people are friendly although Glaswegians and traditionally considered to be more 'friendly' than people from Edinburgh.
There are plenty of other mumsnetters from around here who will be able to help too, I'm sure.

It is a nice place to live, honest! The schools are pretty good but you would need to check a bit as they do vary. As tabitha says, houe prices are on the high side but vary enormously depending on the area. ESPC is great for looking at house prices. If you have some idea of your budget for houses I will try and suggest some areas

alexsmum · 20/08/2005 11:57

we would be looking at suburban i think, but not too far out of city as i have to rely on public transport. boys would go to local school not private. can't say a budget really but would want something like we have already or better which is 3 beds with a garden. any ideas?

Some nice places round about East Kilbride that might be worth having a look at- Strathaven, Bothwell for instance. Don't know area too well. I'm in a village just outside of Glasgow, and it would take about 45 mins to get to EK from here on motorway. You have a big area to choose from, from city to country villages. Have you an idea of the sorts of things that you are looking for?

tabitha · 20/08/2005 12:47

What about somewhere like Balerno or Currie. They are on the 'right' side of Edinburgh for East Kilbride - handyish for M8 (motorway to Glasgow) or A71 (Lanark road) and although they are quite far out from the city centre, they have regular bus services, and there is a train station in Currie. There are also some shops locally - enough for everday needs anyway - and the schools get a good name.
Have a look at this three bedroomed house in Balerno for an idea of what your money might be, but remember the Scottish 'offers over' system means that you may end up paying a lot over the asking price.

sammac · 20/08/2005 13:29

This company sells a lot in Glasgow. We've used them for both buying and selling in the past. It will give you an idea of prices for the kind of property you are looking at. There will be something similar for Edinburgh( but I don't know anything about E property) and you can compare.

sammac · 20/08/2005 13:29

First time I've got a link to work

TwoIfBySea · 21/08/2005 01:44

What about East Kilbride itself? Have you heard something bad about the place there are some nice areas and the schools aren't bad at all. I don't understand why people moving to Scotland only ever want to cluster around Edinburgh or Glasgow. I know there are some dodgy towns but a quick survey on here would tell you which ones to avoid.

There is always Stewartfield in East Kilbride itself which is quite nice. You should try and visit and see for yourself as there are a lot of quiet, suburban areas in the town.

In the town itself there is a huge shopping centre with ice rink, cinema and near that a great country park with play areas, animals, country walks and all free. We take dst there all the way from West Lothian which is nearer to Edinburgh.

We considered moving to EK as houses are cheaper than Glasgow and Edinburgh and DH works at Glasgow Airport but he is hopefully changing jobs soon.

Sorry if this is a bit muddled, I need to go to my bed!

alexsmum · 21/08/2005 10:49

haven't heard anything bad at all , don't know anything about the area .this is what is making it so hard! dh was a student in glasgow for 12 months years ago and has said glasgow is quite nice and i've been to edinburgh.that's as far as our knowledge goes!!! thanks for the link samac but by the time i got to it the page had expired. what kind of price am i looking at for 3 beds and a garden in a nice area? lots of the places we have seen on internet seem very expensive but because we dn't know the areas at all we can't judge really.

DH knows EK really well and says the nicest areas are:

StLeonards (apparently has really good schools.)
Stewartfield (has its own man made loch with boating etc. on it.)
Calderwood (next to the big park I put a link up for.)

Nearby EK are the towns of Eaglesham, Blantyre, Bothwell, Strathaven, all worth a look.

But again I would take a trip up beforehand and scout these areas yourself as everyone has different tastes in housing etc.

sammac · 22/08/2005 21:11

SIL stays in Hamilton in area called Earnock which is up the top. Very good primary school- but they are closing the secondary and all the kids are being bussed to Blantyre(which isn't very nice) Houses in her area are in the high hundreds.

alexsmum · 22/08/2005 21:57

brilliant , thanks guys.now when i'm looking at the estate agents sites i can type in an area. this is what they asre asking for and i haven't got a clue.
it's all conjecture at the moment- don't know whether he will be offered the job but as i pointed out, can't decide whether to take it unless we k ow what we are letting ourselves in for.
we're a bit spoilt where we are. ds's school is 5 mins walks away and is a good school.it is opposite a beautiful park with a duck pond and playground. we're 15 walk from town centre, and 10 mins from train station -with access to big city in 15 mins.there is a nice community feel - everyone friendly and not posh but not scallies either. we've got nice friends etc.
scotland seems a long way away and if we do it, i want to make sure we are somewhere equally nice iyswim.

East Kilbride is 10 minutes drive from us in the South Side of Glasgow. Very friendly, massive tenement flats, town 10 minutes away, only bad thing is crap weather. Flat upstairs from us fixed price is 150,000. And it's got a superb view and right next to Hampden. Depends where you live now and whether it's houses or flats you're looking at. Even houses are relatively cheap here. I love Edinburgh but can't afford it. East Lothian is the most beautiful place in the world in terms of beaches but a long drive to work.

seb1 · 22/08/2005 22:24

East Kilbride comes under South Lanarkshire here is a link to the council which will detail schools etc

south lanarkshire

East Kilbride borders East Renfrewshire Council which has some of the best state schools in Scotland and contains nice suburbs like Newton Mearns and Giffnock
east ren

Try these for houses

Here is a link to EK shopping centre

Let me know if you want any more info

alexsmum · 22/08/2005 22:26

eric we live in the manchester area now and have a 3 bed house. i would like similar or better.
when you say massive teenment flats...what are they like?

OP posts:
seb1 · 22/08/2005 22:29

When looking at houses if they are offers over, at the moment that can mean 25-30% over the price listed, but you can find the price of similar ones using nethouseprice

tabitha · 22/08/2005 22:40

alexmum,

you will find somewhere lovely, I'm sure of it - don't worry
Best thing to do if your dh gets the job is to come up here for a recce (sp?) to see what you think of the area(s) you fancy (or we've recommended )
As for the tenements, they very greatly from tiny 'room and kitchens' in grotty areas to the very fancy and massive (3 bedroom, 2 living rooms and huge kitchen) flat my db lived in in Glasgow.
