Tea Room the Fifteenth - The Viking Hall

amberlight · 29/04/2010 08:43

Here we are in the 15th instalment of the Tea Room for the One Child Family board. All are welcome, whether parents of a single splendid offspring or any other number.
We are this time in a Viking Long Hall tearoom, complete with optional helmets, roaring log fires (in case of chilly spring evenings), rugs aplenty, and all the usual mod cons of life as well.
Our Viking tea room contains Mellors the gardener/handyperson with a talent for relaxing massage (amongst a variety of other characters including Bishops, camels, bison, horses, guinea pigs, dogs, etc etc for reasons that would take too long to explain but you're welcome to read the other Tea Room threads and prepare to have your mind thoroughly boggled). Plenty of tea/coffee/cake/virtual bolly always on offer.
Join us, relax, chat, enjoy.

Oh Racing, thank you. I may go and nuzzle him now

The plastic bottle thing is very difficult. There are lots of studies, Thumb probably knows better than I, that you can get that leaching thing, like from a plastic feeding bottle. Glass is, I think, better - not necessarily break? I tend to use a thermos flask, since the inner glass has a plastic outer

oxeye · 11/06/2010 23:50

Scout - do you mean as in a book/ film or as in "can I see out of the window"

thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 01:16

RS - the bottle thing is a hefty scaremongerer that places a few truths inside a maze of ridiculous hype, if it's the same one I've seen.
Plastic bottles are fine for water IF they are not exposed to high temperatures. This includes not leaving them in the car on a sunny day - the temp will definitely exceed the tested-for limits of the PET plastic (39 deg C and 90% humidity, or that's what it was when I was doing it) and you are likely to get leaching of the plasticisers into your water. The plasticisers have xenoestrogenic properties - that means that they are foreign oestrogen-like chemicals, which may have an effect on the oestrogen-receptors in the bod. This may or may not trigger oestrogenic activity, which may or may not influence oestrogen-affected cancers. On the whole better to be avoided.

Plastic bottles need to be changed regularly as well as they can harbour bacteria - however, the majority of the bacteria are either from your mouth or from the water you would be drinking anyway so that's not really an issue; but the moulds ARE an issue as the spores that are everywhere can 'hatch' or germinate and start to grow. So change the bottles regularly, especially if they have a drinking spout top. I strongly believe the "do not reuse bottles" thing is propaganda by the bottled drink companies - it's reducing their profits if you don't buy a new one each time. I use mine until the plastic starts to look cloudy - if they've had juice in them, I wash them out in 60 deg water (boiling water will deform the bottle - actually, so will 60 deg if you leave it in there long enough) which gets rid of all vegetative organisms (and the skin off your hands, so don't be touching the water!). Usually about 3 uses per bottle, at a guess.

It is better to use a bottle that has been manufactured for fizzy drinks for juice, because fizzy drinks have acid in them too. I don't know whether or not different formulations of PET are used for those bottles but they propably are and it is therefore a good idea to keep water in water bottles and acidy stuff in acidy stuff bottles. Or use a thermos/glass bottle instead.

HTH - and if you get any more of these scary emails, look them up at snopes.com for their hoax value (although I think Snopes writes this particular one off as a hoax entirely, which it isn't exactly)

oxeye - I am having similar ishoos with miniThumb right at this moment - an endless refrain of "Mummy, cuds" and trying to stroke my left arm/hand to stop me typing - most annoying! He is cuddled up to me now though, with his hand tucked into my elbow and strict instructions not to interfere with my typing, poor little thing.

CMOTD - a horse share - wow, lucky you! My best friend got a horse when she was 9 and her mum asked mine if I would like to share - of course I would have but Mum said no, partly because of the cost and partly because my friend and I would both be wanting to ride the horse at the same time, so it wouldn't work.

A&O - have a great 90th birthday party - one of those things where events take precedence over money worries, I think. I went to America to a friend's wedding while I was a student in re-training and pretty penniless - but it was worth it (Dad agreed and he was the one who had to lend me the money to cover my fees while I re-built my finances after)

amber - sorry to hear about the dizziness - inner ear infections are a bugger to deal with, just have to wait for it to pass. Usually 3-5 days - if you're still dizzy after more than a week there might be something else going on as well, like a minor displacement of a neck vertebra.

LOL at small boys and the things they like/are scared of - miniThumb has taken agin the Aardman penguin, mole and pigs (the former in W&G, the latter two in Shaun the sheep). They all have small black beady eyes in common so I'm guessing that's the problem. Whereas he was up last night while I was watching CSI (I had my hand over his eyes for any nasty bits) and he pushed my hand away at one point and said "man dead!" which was scarily perceptive of him. The only contact with screen death he has had, afaik, is Lion King - unless MrThumb has been watching more of his violent movies with miniThumb there as well, something he has an extremely unfortunate tendency to do - although a bit hypocritical as I watch CSI and House and Law& Order with miniT going to sleep next to me . I really need to get a handle on this bedtime thing more.

Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 09:28

(Can I offer anyone some brekky?>

Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 10:45

oxeye -- I meant a room where I could sit in and gaze out the window. My knees and ankles were really bothering me, so I thought sitting in a comfy chair with my legs up and a nice view to look at would distract me. And don't worry, little boys always want cuddles.

A&O -- Enjoy your weekend and the big family party!

amber -- How are you feeling?

All of my talk/planning/meetings about Guide camp this summer have made me really I need to start sorting out camping things for BabyScout. Where to start first....?

MaryBS · 12/06/2010 10:49

I am in AWE Thumbwitch, on your knowledge of plastic bottles!

oxeye, thank you for your kind comments - my humour isn't always appreciated OR understood!

DS is very philosophical at the moment. He has reconciled Genesis and the Big Bang Theory by deciding that God created Earth and everything in it as in Genesis, but the rest of the universe he created with a big bang! I'm still working on yesterday's query "What is God?". Still, its good that he has an enquiring mind!

I've just cooked some maple smoked bacon and am serving it in a tiger baguette. Can I offer anyone else some? Vegetarian bacon available on request...

thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 10:55
Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 11:13

Sounds like a good view to me!

Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 11:15

I've just been up to check on my boys (BabyScout and HubbyScout) both are sound asleep on their left sides, breathing almost in sync (BabyScout's 2 breaths to HubbyScout's 1 but they're almost together on that one). Is very sweet.

amberlight · 12/06/2010 11:27

Wheee! Feel really dizzy - think it's an ear virus wotsit as it's clicking and I'm now rather deaf that side and I feel hot. Must take being unwell more seriously and not find it funny.

AmberBoy has finished his exams!!! Phew.

Oxeye, ds needed to be in bed asleep and you were totally cream-crackered so you're not unreasonable. Mums are not superheroes and children learn good lessons by realising that a very tired mum late at night is sometimes firm with them. It doesn't mean you don't love each other and he will realise that I'm sure. If you let him do it the once, he'll probably want to come downstairs every evening and get exhausted and 'orrible. Or that was certainly the case with ds. I am aware that I am rambling in a slightly deaf aspie way that may be entirely unhelpful but don't you dare think you're a bad mum! (Any of you! )

CMOT, Ben is brilliant! He looks like a real gentleman! I'm afraid after many years of horse ownership we've got a bit blase about grooming kits. Having done many exams on the Exact Correct Techniques using Three Hundred Different Items, we've tended to go for one ordinary everyday brush & one hoof pick most of the time . But Mr T is a hairy cob who lives out half the day so doesn't need to be groomed to international standards unless he's competing (in which case it's 'every hand on deck' with the clippers, hose, shampoo, scissors, plaits and oils.

Ooo, need to go lie down...hello to everyone else....have a cup of something...

Hello everyone.

As it looks like being a fine evening, shall we get Mellors to fire up the Viking barbecue for an ox roast (veggie options available on request)?

Meanwhile, it's been a while since we fired up the tea room glitter balls, so as it's Saturday night, who'd care to strut their stuff on the dance floor?

Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 20:34

Ooohhhh, glitter balls! Proper disco!

(Not a football fan, really, but very unsure of who to root for in tonight's match....)

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 12/06/2010 20:59

Oh, Scout, I see your dilemma!

Do you want to put a record on the juke box?

I always like to throw a few shapes to this one.

CMOTdibbler · 12/06/2010 21:08

Fabulous disco

DH is watching the football (today was a nightmare day when he could have been watching cricket, rugby or football at any given time), and had ideas that DS would want to stay up late and have some father/son quality time watching it. DS wasn't impressed.

Amber - as Ben lives out 24/7/365, grooming is limited to two brushes (I thought a rubber curry comb might shift the mud more) and a hoof pick. ATM he hasn't got any shoes on, so doesn't even really need his feet doing, but will have fronts soon. The two of us started lateral work today, which was fun

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 12/06/2010 21:33

Hiya, Cmot.

Would you like some Bolly and to pick a kicking choon to which we could make some moves?

CMOTdibbler · 12/06/2010 21:40

I'm loving this from Glee atm

Bolly is always welcome - how about some artisan cheese to go with it

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 12/06/2010 22:06

Wow! synchronicity! My friend just posted that on Facebook. It is truly brilliant.

Artisan cheese. How lovely. We can grate it over the Twiglet Surprise.

UniS · 12/06/2010 22:12

chese and nibbles. brought to you by mellors and teh nmbs.
How old ish is baby scout? boy was useing a baby sleepin bag ( groebag) plus flece blanket under and over ( with Pjs and a vest) till he was 2. now has a proper kids sleeping bag.He has a karrimat, but will move up to a thermarest type soon. I cover his camp mat with a sheet to catch the drool.
Clothing wise, I like to stick him in waterproof trews till the dew has dryed up. fleece trews have been very usefull.

Camp blankets came up in conversation at the pub last night. mine was described as a "life blanket" coz I can tell a tale about most of teh patches on there.

UniS · 12/06/2010 22:16

Think I prefer the origianal safety dance. Men Without Hats.
Dh is playing it now.
any one else remember "toast" by street band

teafortwo · 12/06/2010 22:21

Not a disco track, but quite good for prancing around too...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOmZimH00oo

Actually... Milk and I often clean to this song.

We were on the bus this week and she said "Grrrrr.... I want to sing a song but I don't remember the words."

"OK well maybe I can help you..." I started "Which song is it?"

"Oooohhhh grrrrrr I can't remember the name too." She whinned in frustration.

"Well what is it about? Maybe I can work it out?"

"Well it is about a man who loves a man and he is waiting for him but he is always late."

Me... and

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 12/06/2010 22:46

I agree that the original Safety Dance is better, but that dance routine is captivating!

Would you like some Bolly, Tea and Unis?

While we're I'm reliving the 80s, put on your batwing jumper and pixie boots and have a bop to this

Scout19075 · 12/06/2010 23:48

WHEW, draw! Saves me from having to feel happy and sad at the same time!

It's like when Mom put on the movie "The Patriot" in January and I exclaimed "Don't let BabyScout see that! He'll be confused -- his people are killing his people!"

DH has never heard The Safety Dance?!?!

UniS BabyScout is 7.5 months (on Monday) and will be 9.5 months when we go camping. One of the other leaders has given me a waterproof jumpsuit for him that her children have outgrown. It should, in theory, be too big for him, but the way he's growing it could be a decent fit! He won't be walking by then (hopefully!) but am considering getting him some cheap hard-ish type shoes (like sandels or crocs) to just wear when he's on the grass with the girlies. We tell them they need shoes and we're camping in a farmer's field so who knows what we'll find. I'm planning on keeping him in a paddling pool filled with toys to keep him confined. What weight of grobag would you recommend? He has two fleece blankets one is a double fleece (two heavy pieces put together) with decorations and the other his camp blanket. Did you put yours in a hat overnight to sleep? Also might be able to borrow a camping cot. I ask all these questions because even when it's warm I'm always cold and even on a normal day don't know how to dress BabyScout!

I fancy a Root Beer Float -- anyone else like one while I'm making some?

MaryBS · 13/06/2010 08:13

I've never had root beer, will give most things a try once!

Still feeling a bit wobbly. argh.
