Tea Room the Fifteenth - The Viking Hall

Here we are in the 15th instalment of the Tea Room for the One Child Family board. All are welcome, whether parents of a single splendid offspring or any other number.
We are this time in a Viking Long Hall tearoom, complete with optional helmets, roaring log fires (in case of chilly spring evenings), rugs aplenty, and all the usual mod cons of life as well.
Our Viking tea room contains Mellors the gardener/handyperson with a talent for relaxing massage (amongst a variety of other characters including Bishops, camels, bison, horses, guinea pigs, dogs, etc etc for reasons that would take too long to explain but you're welcome to read the other Tea Room threads and prepare to have your mind thoroughly boggled). Plenty of tea/coffee/cake/virtual bolly always on offer.
Join us, relax, chat, enjoy.

I found a threatening solicitor's letter was remarkably effective when trying to get help for Mum.

MT, good plan re the list of simple and basic Eeek moments when dealing with a wee aspie.

My frustration is largely that there is no joined up thinking - he has to see the nurse every week for a bloodtest. Why, then he is there, does she not do a quick 'how are you doing, lets have a squint at your leg, gosh, you still seem very breathless' kind of thing to keep an eye on him. Instead, he's left trying to decide whether he's supposed to go back to the GP or what - and being old and stubborn (and very scared of what will happen - he's very aware he could lose his leg to this), he avoids that if possible

Come and work with me Amber - the advantage of working with software engineers and physicists is that the whole company seems to be filled with people with aspie tendencies

amberlight · 27/05/2010 13:05

Ah no, the nurse is only there to do the blood test. There's no form to tell her to do anything else. Grr.

CMOT, I worked with software people for years. Absolutely brilliant fun - totally clear, loved it! Same with our Surveyors. It's just some charities that seem to be so ephemeral in the way they approach every decision (or rather complete lack of them) that I'm left clueless and and . But they're the ones who need the work to happen, alas. Just spoken with lovely alternative boss of another charity who's very clear and direct and she's cheered me up, though.

Oh cmot < lowers coffee Danish and a hug>
poor you and parents
do come out and tell us more if it would help, or just lurk as long as you need

thumbwitch · 27/05/2010 14:13

Sad isn't it - reductionist attitudes at work, creating jobsworth situations. The nurse probably hasn't the time to ask, and even if she does she might get into trouble for overstepping her boundaries. Daft.

And there aren't many District nurses left to go round and check up on people like CMOTD's Dad - more daft. All part of the desocialisation (is that even a word?) situation that we are all in.

bolly anyone? or is it too early for you all? How about an Irish coffee?

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/05/2010 22:48

Did you say Bolly?

happycopter · 27/05/2010 23:01

I'd have some Bolly if someone would beam it over to me... am at work, with the tail end of a miserable cold and feeling exhausted. Bleurgh.

UniS · 27/05/2010 23:10

Mary and Mistle- you are both welcome to meet up with boy and I somewhere in devon... I will warn you tho, that we not having access to a car mid week does limit where we can get too, sorry. BUT if you like the idea of dartmoor and walking up hills we could come to some arrangement I'm sure.

CMOT - the priest hole is being re-stocked with chocolate and comforter just for you.

night all.

Ps- I love this village. this evening saw a bunch of parents laying turf and seeding grass in the playground. tomorrow is an evening picnic/ tasting for the cider we pressed back in autumn.

So- RL a bit busy.

thumbwitch · 28/05/2010 02:07

UniS - your village does sound a bit like a 1950s throwback - or like the one in Calendar Girls, or Jam and Jerusalem. Love it!

Enjoy the cider...

UniS · 28/05/2010 22:18

funny enough Jam and Jerusalem is filmed at 2 small towns not far from here...

CIder was nice. strong and nice....

Boy had good fun till he ran full tilt into a pint of cider and got a glass full down his shirt. Not a happy boy. May I claim the tea room prize for prepared mummyness- I had his jacket in the bag, so he changed and went off to play more cricket.

Quiet round here tonight... is RL treating you OK or are you all in the priest hole with the choc box of requirement ,a very large gin and tonic and several straws.

Donki · 28/05/2010 22:26

Many thanks ladies for all the ear rubs and hoof holding. You are complete stars - and the thoughts and cyber support have been wonderful... and may I say what a wonderful withers/back massage Mellors can give!

Dad died last Sunday - so now its all the messy bits of organising funeral and sorting out the will (since I am the sole willing executor)

"free, free at last. Free to fly like a phoenix, to fly home on wings of love"

Sorry for the piece of hay in the hot chocolate CMOT, can't think how that got there.

teafortwo · 28/05/2010 22:47

Donki... I believe there are some rather old and very good wines somewhere down here...

teafortwo · 28/05/2010 22:51

Pulls out a dusty looking '53 which according to my google search was an excellent year for wines.

asmallbunchofflowers · 28/05/2010 23:56

I'm joining in the toast to Donki's dad.

Donki - If you need extra ear rubs, hoof holding or one of Mellors' special withers massages you have only to say.

Thinking of you.

thumbwitch · 29/05/2010 01:32

Donk - much ear rubbing and hoof holding and pats (and (((hugs))) if acceptable)

to echo Tea:
To Donki's Dad

"free, free at last. Free to fly like a phoenix, to fly home on wings of love"

What a lovely phrase.

Donki, thoughts, prayers, and I've got the full cooked breakfast available and large buckets of tea brewing for you.

The habituees of the tea room are wonderful people - this made me cry (in a good way) when I read all your messages.

Thankyou so much

CMOTdibbler · 29/05/2010 14:08

Much love to you Donki, and wishing you strength in the days and weeks to come.

I rather like the hay in my hot choc - Dad always used to gently shed hay wherever he went, and the thought makes me smile.

Some aromatherapy hoof oil for you here

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 29/05/2010 19:39

International buffet on the table - please tuck in. The chicken jalfrezi with Yorkshire pudding is a particularly piquant combination.

RacingSnake · 29/05/2010 20:58

Delicilious! Just wondering what to cook tomorrow. Tonight we had what restaurants would call a 'medley of meats and vegetables' - leftovers.

Donki, so glad that Dad is now free and flying again.

CMOT, I love the sound of your Dad. Wish I had had one like that. Mine was wonderful but died very early and had more bad luck than any one life should have. I remember long walks, though, and then Dad smoking his pipe in the woods while I made houses for fairies in between tree roots using moss and acorn cups, or driving lessons with his newspaper propped on the dashboard.

Have been having a lovely time with Wriggle, who appears to have made a developmental breakthrough so that I can now bribe and manipulate negotiate with her. Doesn't work when DH is there, as he still capitulates, but on our own we have a really nice time.

Got lost of the way back from Longleat yesterday and found ourselves in a magical country of tiny grey-stone villages, avenues of giant pines and a tunnel through a hill. Made me think of 'The Little White Horse.'
