Tea Room the Ninth: I love rock and roll, put another dime in the juke box baby

1000 replies

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 16/06/2009 22:20

Welome to the ninth incarnation of the tea room. It's been a long and eventful road, from a tea room overlooking a cathedral garden to a beachside cafe, with a diversion via a yurt. Now - voila - we are in a music lounge. We cater for all tastes and, as this is a tea room of requirement, it manages simultaneously to be many things at once. For some, it is a 70s glam rock disco with a cool boho edge - glitter balls, smoke machine and much wearing of platform shoes and eyeliner. For others, a jazz bar where mellow music is played as cocktails are served. For still others, it's a concert performance of Spem In Allium. We still have a garden, with shady parasols for the summer, and a menagerie of pets. Our membership is international.

The tea room has few rules. Everyone is welcome. But anyone visiting with the sole intention of causing hurt or shouting abuse will be ejected by Mellors, the multi-talented gardener-handyman who (it turns out) is also a guitar wizard and rock god.

Please come in.

LOL at typing cat.

HAd a mini house warming this morning, a couple of boys friends came over to play. One of teh mums arrived bearing a wicker basket lined with napkins full of fresh choc chip muffins!!! she said it was her desperate housewifes tribute... thsi was slightly lost on me as I dont; watch DHW, but maybe some of you will know what she was on about.

Boy adored having a friend to play football with. must sort out a playdate or two for him with likely looking lads his age once he starts local preschool.

waves to Mary, hope you guys have an OK weekend away from the presures of school.

waves to Cat, chin up love.

CMOTdibbler · 04/09/2009 20:24

Why do my cats never do anything productive, only destructive with the PC ?

No idea on Desperate Housewives - have only watched 5 minutes before I gave up on it as def un me.

Busy weekend - off to parents town to take in the folk music and dance festival which is on all over the town and is free, then to evening wedding reception. Staying the night and then enjoying the hotel pool Sunday morning as we are there. May then go to where we used to live to nose at what has happened to our house.

DS has his first ever playdate next weekend

MadBadOnlyReadsTheBroadsheets · 04/09/2009 20:51

Congrats on the housewarming, UniS. And fab that UniBoy may have found a friend already.

Now, Desperate Housewives. It is set on a cul-de-sac (I think, the topography isn't entirely clear) called Wisteria Drive. There is a regular exodus of residents - it's rather like the Midsomer neighbourhood in that residents get murdered/commit murder/go to jail/run away with the circus/are unmasked as escaped felons/do a moonlight flit to avoid said unmasking far more often than the national statistics would suggest is likely - and so new neighbours are frequently turning up. When they do, said DHs [in this context, desperate housewwives] turn up bearing gifts in order to snoop on their new neighbours and scoff at their furniture make friends. These gifts are usually edible. The local domestic goddess who rejoices in the name of Bree van der Camp Hodge usually outdoes the other DHs by bringing something divine beautifully presented in a wicker basket. 'Tis satire.

Or so I read in the Radio Times. I never watch it myself. Oh no.

Your weekend sounds fab, Cmot. And yay for the playdate.

It's Friday. Champagne, anyone?

UniS · 04/09/2009 22:09

Ahhhh, the desperate HWs reference is explained, Thank you muchly, makes sence now.
These were friends from city, so old friends of boys rather than new. he is happily still at the age where he will play with any body at the rec ground, so new play friends shouldn't be hard to find. I'll try toodler group in next village next week, I think the one in this village is on a day I work.

Now then, in honour of my friends homage to DHWs I bring you, a wicker basket full of muffins and a jug ( hand thrown by atisan potter of course) of yummy, think and fluffy hot chocolate. there are glass mugs on teh counter and a selection of sprinkles to add to your hot choc. If you try hard you can probadly turn it into a pudding. Mean while, I'm off to snoop around teh rest of MN and see what teh curtains are like, and may be run a finger for dust....

MadBadOnlyReadsTheBroadsheets · 04/09/2009 22:18

Oooh yummy.

If you're venturing outside the tea room, there's a lively ruckus debate going on about the best singers ever. And we're just starting a MN Ladies' Ukulele Ensemble if you're up for a bit of strumming ....

UniS · 04/09/2009 22:26

is that the uke stalkers? I shall go and take a look.

MadBadOnlyReadsTheBroadsheets · 04/09/2009 22:41

Well, there's only one stalker. But things have moved on. We are forming a ladies' ukulele band and going on world tour, so that we can meet our heroes. For most of use it's just a musical adventure.

thumbwitch · 05/09/2009 00:44

ooh, lovely hot choc and muffins, UniS!
Glad you had a good party - I had a houseleaving one back in June which was quite funny cos there was next to no furniture in the place and most people ended up sitting on the floor! Still, it was nice of them to come and make the effort to see us.

I'm not too sure about ukuleles - inextricably linked with windowcleaners in my mind...

Jacksmama · 05/09/2009 03:52

UniS, re your post of 22.09 - what is a toodler group?

Sorry, that just jumped out at me and for some reason had me in stitches. Also laughed myself silly over RS's typing cat named FRED who almost said "oh shit and then quit... LOLOLOLOL!!

Jackbaby and I are on our own this weekend as Jackspapa is away at a football game with his friends. JB is already fast asleep, as he had a very busy day - a girlfriend brought her 3 1/2 year old over today and she played him out to the point that he was asleep ten minutes after they went home. Then he had just less than an hour nap and went to a neighbourhood babysitter so I could have some me-time and go to yoga. Apparently they ran him around, too. He was glassy-eyed by the time we got home, and when we did, he climbed into my lap, loudly demanded "BABA!!!", drained me like a tank in about five minutes and has been zonked out ever since.

Which means I have a quiet evening of undisturbed reading ahead... ahhh bliss!!

RacingSnake · 05/09/2009 08:42

I have been to many toodler groups. The little ones toodle around, the mums sit in little cliques and look at you. There is nothing to say and it is frowned upon to take a book to while away the hours.

MaryBS · 05/09/2009 08:51

We've got "picnic in the park" this afternoon! Lots of local bands playing outside, finishing with a firework display! DH has had to go into work this morning (boo), but all being well he'll make it home.

Personally I prefer pootler groups, but mine are a bit old for that now

Tesco have got luxury sticky toffee pudding half-price at the moment - would anyone like some, topped with extra thick channel islands cream, or is it too early for that?

I'll have a bash at a ukelele, if someone wouldn't mind giving me a few lessons...?

teafortwo · 05/09/2009 10:21

OMG - Picnic in the park sounds so so so lovely....

Aaaaah - toddler groups - they don't really do them here in Paris... but being British I felt the need to attend one! I had to travel on a tram then by bus then go under the ground to a basement of a big big swimming pool to get to Milk's one hour group which was actually more of an American baby school translated into French kind of thing - you might know of it JM as I imagine this particular baby school has made it to your woods too - Gymboree? If you know of it I would say it is a sophisticated 'Mums and Tots group' (another name for Toddler groups).

On the side Milk and I would save our best clothes for this day because everyone turned up looking simply beauiful...

Talking about what to wear (nice link) I had a fab entry for 'that' DM forum about J Norks from Norkshire needing lots of support in what to wear... but couldn't post it because I gave a fake e-mail (who in their right mind gives the DM a real e-mail???)... grrr!!!!

teafortwo · 05/09/2009 10:37

And also.... I wanted to tell you all...

Milk wants a 'bruvva' [rolls eyes]...

Two weeks ago:

Milk: Is Grandpa my bruvva?

Me: No! He is your Grandfather....(goes on to explain what a brother is giving examples).

About one week ago:

Milk: I want a baby bruvva. You want a baby Mummy? Where is my baby Mummy? In your tummy?
(repeated annoyingly often!)

Two days ago:

Milk presents a painting of Daddy to me.

Me: Luuurvly... What is that on Daddy's chin?

Milk: My baby bruvva. Like (refers to a friend's baby brother).

So... we have spent lots of time on the dog search. We have defo decided on a breed... now... what do you think doggy people...

Cocker spaniel!!!!????!!!!

And today Beer is e-mailing a breeder we know!!! Horray horray!!! I am so so so excited!!!!

amberlight · 05/09/2009 10:56

Cocker spaniels are lovely! May it take his mind off baby bruvvas...

Morning all. Tea available. Are we getting very close to needing a new tea room, by the way?

MadBadOnlyReadsTheBroadsheets · 05/09/2009 11:10

A cup of tea - just what I need.

Well, at 941 threads we're getting quite close to needing a new tea room. Let's make a plan! What sort of establishment do we want to be, this time? As it will be the tenth, it ought to be extra special - but how?

And Amber ... I think I've spotted the Rev on other threads and have surmised that her pregnancy's going well. Next time you're speaking to her, do invite her to drop in and let us know how she's faring. (There's an outside chance I've recently seen her photo in an exhibition, but I don't want to ask her outright for fear of blowing her cover and mine).

MaryBS · 05/09/2009 13:23

mmm tea....

Just wondered if everyone knew that Gerard is on Ch 5 atm, in My Father the Hero?

I have just baked some scones, for the cream teas at the picnic this pm - anyone like one or 2?

Jacksmama · 05/09/2009 15:53

Tea - I am going to buck the trend and disagree... I personally don't like cocker spaniels. The plenty I have met have all been dumb as stumps. They're pretty, yes, but dim. Now, King Charles spaniels - they're lovely and smart!!

Am - had a terrible sleep. JB was wiggly and wanted "BABA!!" all bloody night, and the weather was so odd last night, rain and thunder showers and warm and humid, that I sweated buckets... of course was too sleepy at any point to get up and turn on the overhead fan. And all this despite having the bed to ourselves because DH is away! He laughs because when he gets up in the morning, he says JB and I immediately turn sideways or diagonal in the bed and spread out like starfish, taking up every inch of available space .

Must get both of us ready, I have to work for a few hours this morning so JB is going to G-ma's. Which is great but would be even greater if it wasn't absolutely pissing down with rain... I want summer back .

End of my trivial moan.

Would anyone like some McVities Chocolate and Caramel Digestives?

amberlight · 05/09/2009 17:05

Who's Gerard?? Must pay attention with my one brain cell.
Yes please to scones, digestives and anything else going. Have toppled off small fence into raspberry canes in a Border Wars incident. No real damage apart from to my ego.
JM, extra strong coffee for you, and an umbrella. And a brochure of hot tropical destinations.
MadBad, no clue about new tea room. I suspect it could be the same one, but in a luscious new location...ideas?

UniS · 05/09/2009 20:29

scones always go down well. I had a few at cricket this afternoon. WHY did the english invent a game that really needs a dry day to play. ANd then WHY do english men decide that will play it in teh rain anyway.
New cricket club is very picturesque, untill teh cloud comes down and then it is just soggy.

Dh going off to play for them again tomorrow , an away game. BUT i've won the car, so boy and I can go swimming what ever the weather.

New tea room on teh horizon. erm. shall we go back to teh old place, the first one, next door to teh bishops with chintz and bay windows.
I took at a look at teh Uke thread, then wondered off to you tube to listen to my fav uke player, Jake S.... can;t rember his surname, but someone had linked to him. I'd like to see him and teh Uke Oc of GB on same stage.

teafortwo · 05/09/2009 21:10

Just to confirm when I said 'Cocker Spaniel' I did mean an English Cocker Spaniel....

www.petyourdog.com/images/dog%20breeds/english_cocker_spaniel.jpg

incase there was any confusion...

(hopes JM thought I was talking about American Cockers....?)

E-mail sent... yipeeeeee!!!!

DontCallMeBaby · 05/09/2009 21:30

Ahem. It's just I really REALLY love them.

I need to go and have a discussion with DH about our wedding anniversary in December. This should be a nice thing to do, but it is likely to involve making a decision, and I'm not keen on making decisions.

First though I need to go and make sure the citoons haven't trapped themselves in our bedroom ...

MadBadOnlyReadsTheBroadsheets · 05/09/2009 22:39

Gerard is Depardieu.

I remember that film and would have liked to see it again. Ho hum.

I am absolutely shattered, having taken a posse of Brownies to a centenary party this afternoon, so will just slump here and scoff cake and biscuits.

Jacksmama · 06/09/2009 06:49
thumbwitch · 06/09/2009 06:59

I Fear most spaniels have a screw or too loose - although Cavalier King Charles spaniels have an especially snooty way of putting you down with a mere look which is quite entertaining!
this is the sort of things I mean. A friend of mine named hers Winston because he was very Churchillesque.
Her mum also had a springer spaniel - nuts. And my other friend who has a springer spaniel, hers is also nuts.

amberlight · 06/09/2009 08:47

The original tea room with the ha ha was entertaining, yes.

Ah, THAT Gerard! If only my brain would store names and details of people somewhere useful, which it doesn't

So sorry, didn't see you there! < Uncrumples his copy of 'Venice Cruises for the Modern Actor' for him. Moves to seat at opposite end of sofa>
