An only child but bro's and sisters would have been quite nice

I'm an only child and grew up having a nice childhood, although i often wished i had brothers and sisters to play with, or me and maybe one other. I think it explains why i had my four little darlings! I'm hoping they all only have one child each though as i don't fancy cooking for 16 grandkids when they all descend on me for Sunday lunch in years to come!!

In one child families section? Oh well.

Stockhausen · 24/02/2014 20:13

To make us all feel guilty?

canyourearme · 24/02/2014 20:17

My dh feels the same as an only. We have 4. I am 1 of 3 and would have liked to have been an only!

Spherical · 24/02/2014 20:17

Shall I tell you about how much I hated being one of four children or would that be insensitive?

sonlypuppyfat · 24/02/2014 20:18

My mum is one of ten and she and all her brothers and sisters all went on to only have one child each. And as an only child myself I've had 3 kids. The only thing I hate about being an only child is that everyone thinks you were spoilt, I wasn't!

lovelymumof4 · 24/02/2014 20:37

Not trying to make anyone feel guilty, just merely pointing out that i am an only child and it was okay.

lovelymumof4 · 24/02/2014 20:40

I wasn't spoilt either, but kids at school thought i was, so annoying!

sonlypuppyfat · 24/02/2014 20:46

I know you weren't trying to make anyone feel guilty some people like to look for a row.

Stockhausen · 24/02/2014 20:52

Not looking for a row, just sensitive when people say how Having siblings would be nice or other thinly veiled digs

sonlypuppyfat · 24/02/2014 21:03

Sorry must be thick skinned but where is the dig.

canyourearme · 24/02/2014 21:08

I cant see a problem with op either.

Spherical · 24/02/2014 22:06

Here is the insensitive bit for those who couldn't spot it: i often wished i had brothers and sisters to play with, or me and maybe one other.

lovelymumof4 · 24/02/2014 22:14

How is that insensitive ? I was an only child, that's why i put the thread in one child families.

Misfitless · 24/02/2014 23:05

Spherical, it wouldn't be insensitive if you want to post about it.

Don't think i was being insensitive in the slightest. Some people.

midnightagents · 24/02/2014 23:28

It's a fact that many only children sometimes feel lonely and want someone to play with. It's not insensitive to point that out. They might hate the reality but it's a fact that they sometimes wish for it.

bluebeanie · 25/02/2014 06:13

I'm with fruitloop. Sorry, I don't get it. I know you're any only child, but I guess this bit is mostly for people with one child. Some people don't have an option to have more. Posting about having your 'four little darlings' because you were an only and wanted siblings, may seem like to some a little hurtful perhaps?

Parsnipcake · 25/02/2014 06:35

I'm an only child and hated it so I had loads of children - I foster. I have no foubt that my children resent being one of many sometimes - no-one has a perfect life and there is no combination of perfect family. The main reason I hated my childhood is that my parents were more interested in smoking and arguing than entertaining me or helping me with friendships, it wasn't that being an only child is bad per se. But I had to spend a lot of time reAding. Not that I didn't like it, there just wasn't much else to do. My DH had siblings, but he didn't get on with them, so he too spent a lot if time reading.

Why get sensitive about this stuff?

lovelymumof4 · 25/02/2014 12:38

Exactly, why get sensitive about it or offended. I only started a light-hearted thread. Wasn't meant cause upset to anyone.

I guess nobody thought the part apart Sunday lunch was even remotely funny.
