How many onlies in your child's class?

Just heard that 21 of the 30 places in the school we hope DS will go to next Sept are going to siblings, which means there will only a handful of onlies (or just him?) in his class (as a number of the remaining 9 children will have younger siblings).

How many onlies in your only child's class? Does anyone actually know the statistics from the latest census on family size? I'm feeling a bit in the minority today!

Will have a think. Year 1 DD has 27 in her class. So far have thought of 21 of them and there are 9 with older siblings, 8 with younger, 3 only children and one I don't know. And another 6 children whose names I can't remember....

Not trying DS's Year 3 class with 34 in as we moved when he was in year 1 and if I can't remember 27 children I am unlikely to remember 34 Grin

ASuitableGirl · 03/12/2011 14:47

His class has at least 3 only children that I can think of, off the top of my head.

noddyholder · 03/12/2011 14:52

My ds is an only and he had 9 in his class all boys!

onefatcat · 03/12/2011 14:54

There are 7 out of 30 in dds class.

onefatcat · 03/12/2011 15:02

Actually there are 8! just remembered another one.

DontCallMeBaby · 03/12/2011 17:53

I'd never be able to remember off the top of my head, but I have a class list and can go down it thinking 'she has an elder sister, I met her when I went to pick DD up from their house; his mum has two littlies with her when she does the school run; can't even picture that child; DD's best friend, that's easy ...' and so on.

I think at this age (DD is 7) it's the youngest child in the family, especially if they're the youngest by a few years, that you're more likely to mistake for an only, rather than the eldest. Parents of 7yos who are the eldest in the family do the school run with little ones in two, the ones whose 7yo is the youngest are often just picking up that child while the older ones look after themselves!

I am very impressed so many of you know this information!

As I say I don't even know the names of all of the children in my DCs classes - as a result i don't know who their parents are either! I must go around with blinkers on Smile

joanofarchitrave · 04/12/2011 17:04

ds is the only only in his class of 30, which includes 3 sets of twins.

Hulababy · 04/12/2011 17:08

In dd's class there are 2 only children, inc DD.

In my y1 class I have no idea! Class teacher will have that info I guess but tbh I don't need it.

lljkk · 04/12/2011 17:09

Quick mental tally of DC's "friends" whom I'm sure of... came up with
2/20 (10%) onlies
8/20 (40%) in 2 child families
50% in 3+ child families.

But Is that because we are a family of 4 kids...hmmm.

Hulababy · 04/12/2011 17:15

Know this as dd is in Y5 and current,y there are now 12 girls in Dd's Class. It's an ndependent prep school.

0 sibling - 2
1 sibling - 6
2 sibling - 1
3 sibling - 2

3 sibling - 1 (has sev half/step siblings)

I used to help out a lot with DS1's year group, I could have given a reliable answer 2 years ago for them (52 kids or so). Thankfully that info has passed out of my brain now can't be arsed to try to recall.

UniS · 04/12/2011 21:17

24 in the class
AFAIK
1 of 4 or more = 2
1 of 3 =5
1 of 2 =11
only child = 4
No idea = 2

quite few are eldest sib in the family. 11 of them I think ( including those with no sibs) another 2 have no sibs still at that school.

FunnysInTheGarden · 04/12/2011 21:22

one in a class of 28. Glad DH has a sibling for many reasons

DrNortherner · 08/12/2011 18:37

Including ds there are 7 I know of his in class of 30.

DrNortherner · 08/12/2011 18:38

FWIW I am an only and all my close friends as a kid had siblings. Made not a jot of difference.

arabicabean · 09/12/2011 23:43

Nursery pre-prep - two onlies out of a class of nine children. How do I know - several class parties and mothers' coffee mornings.

EssentialFattyAcid · 26/12/2011 10:24

In primary school for my dd's classes there were normally 4 or 5 onlies in a class of 30.

All the only parents became good friends of mine, and it was lovely to have this peer group during primary school.

I think if you feel that you are the only 1 child family it must be harder.

QOD · 26/12/2011 10:30

Well at DD's primary there were only 2 of them in a class of 32!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 26/12/2011 10:34

DS's year 3 class there are 3 boys and one whose Mum has fairly recently had a baby. One of the boys as struggled to find a friend after the friend he made in reception left that year but is now playing with a new boy who joined the class. The others all play together and spend a lot of time outside school together, or did until recently. Everyone kind of knows everyone else there.

In DD's class (yr 8) I don't really know but do know of one girl and one who has much older half brothers.
