How many onlies in your child's class?

Just heard that 21 of the 30 places in the school we hope DS will go to next Sept are going to siblings, which means there will only a handful of onlies (or just him?) in his class (as a number of the remaining 9 children will have younger siblings).

How many onlies in your only child's class? Does anyone actually know the statistics from the latest census on family size? I'm feeling a bit in the minority today!

I'm not sure now, as there has been some movement in and out of the class.

As far as I know, there are 3 onlies. There are also a few children who have very much older step- and half-siblings who don't live with them, so they are the only children currently living at home (which I know isn't the same thing).

chrimblycompo · 30/11/2011 13:29

I don't know
do people usually know all the kids in their child's class? That's 30 children!

gilmoregirl · 30/11/2011 13:40

I am not sure about all 30 but I think that there are maybe around four or five out of DS's class (incl DS) I know three for certain and that 20 definitey have siblings.

At DS nursery it was a different story ALL of his friends (six others) were only children.

When you've been at the school for years - and there are some children who you've known them from birth - then sometimes you do! I spend very little time in the playground, so there are other parents who are much au fait than I am.

Blu · 30/11/2011 15:28

I know of 3 - there may be more.

irregularegular · 30/11/2011 15:31

I'm pretty sure there is only one in DS's class (though not entirely confident about a couple of the girls) and there may not be any in DD's. There's definitely none among the girls.

It's a 2.4 children kind of a village.

FirstNoelle · 30/11/2011 15:33

Only two in DS's class.

seeker · 30/11/2011 15:35

In my ds's year 6 class there are 2 only children. And 1 is in a family of 8 children. Most are 2 or 3.

Bucharest · 30/11/2011 15:35

More than half.

So much for living in Catholic Italy huh? Wink

CMOTdibbler · 30/11/2011 15:35

I think of ds's class of 14, 4 are only children

Dinosaurhunter · 30/11/2011 15:36

Four in ds reception class , but I guess some of them may still be panning to have more children

StaceymAloneForver · 30/11/2011 15:52

i dont know over our 2 class recpetion year but we have 4 sets of twins, so that's 4 who may possibly have been onlies that aren't Grin

somebody clever will pop up with statistics later would be interesting to read!

DontCallMeBaby · 03/12/2011 13:49

Class of ... um ... 29 currently. As well as DD two of the boys are definitely onlies, and there's one girl and two boys who I can't put the faces of siblings to.

At least eleven children are from families of three or more children.

morethanyoubargainfor · 03/12/2011 13:54

my ds is the only only! although there are only 6 children in his class, 2 of which are twins Grin.

notevenaChristmousie · 03/12/2011 13:55

My DD is one of three onlies - one of the others being one of her closest friends. It's strange - it's a church school, so I also have the dubious honour of being one of only 2 single parents too. I don't feel left out or lacking particularly though (unless I choose to wallow in it).

EnjoyResponsibly · 03/12/2011 14:02

Some of the kids you think are on lies might actually be the eldest child in a family though.

EnjoyResponsibly · 03/12/2011 14:05

Sorry OP I re read your post and you already said that. In DSs class there is him and 2 other kids. Or 1 in 7.

HughBastard · 03/12/2011 14:06

Absolutely no idea.

Are we supposed to know this sort of thing?

pooka · 03/12/2011 14:09

OUt of the 30 in ds1's yr 1 class, I know of1 only child. I think that 1 of the girls in the corresponding class is an only child. So 2 out of 60. I know because I've probably seen all the parents at some point or other at pick up or drop off or via dd (lots of year 1s have older siblings).

Larger families seem to be quite common in our school. Know of several children in ds1's class who have3 or more siblings.

cece · 03/12/2011 14:15

I don't even know the names of most of the class let alone their family situation! Who knows this sort of information - really?

startail · 03/12/2011 14:26

3/8 of my NCT class are onlies.
I can think of two girls in DDs class brought up as onlies ( one has a very much older half sister who lives with her mum). There are probably others, but DDs out.

startail · 03/12/2011 14:30

Cece DD2 probably knows this info for almost the entire 100 pupil school, but she's at a sleep over. I wouldn't have a clue and DD1 wouldn't eitherGrin

Yama · 03/12/2011 14:32

There are no only children in my dd's class (of 18). Even last year, when there were 24, none were onlies. She is 6.

Yama · 03/12/2011 14:34

Cece - I know their family situations because we always invite the whole class to dd's birthday party and I talk to the parents.

munstersmum · 03/12/2011 14:38

DS is 1 of 3 onlies in a class of 23 Yr3. He is at state primary but someone on another thread said far more onlies in private.
