The One and Only Tea Room - Now Hanging in Babylon

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 13/05/2011 23:57

Well folks, here we are, transported through time and space to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Golden couches and the distressed chintz sofa are arranged on a terrace overlooking the Euphrates and, as we recline on the exquisitely-soft cushions eating peeled grapes, we can enjoy the warm fragrance of the gardens' many exotic blooms. The garden is tended by the indefatigable Mellors, with occasional help from the bishops, rabbis and any passing world leaders. Somewhere behind the terrace there is an aga and a priest's hole, with optional massage table.

Please come and join us for a celebratory drink and conversation ranging from the profound to the profoundly silly.

My friend at home (in hospice) died this afternoon (Eastern Standard Time).

Sh!t.

Just called Mom and she didn't know. Double Sh!t.

Mom and other friend were due to go visit ill friend tomorrow, so they didn't get to make it, send our love, etc. Triple Sh!t.

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 20:23

I need to get a shedload of sympathy cards tomorrow.

This sucks.

I'm off to drown my sorrows (and I'm all alone with a sleeping TS)....

UniS · 20/05/2011 20:30

Scout - Wine and sympathy. sometimes life sucks.

Donki · 20/05/2011 20:41

Scout - Much sympathy from here.

Donki · 20/05/2011 20:42

(and a quiet shoulder in the corner by the hay pile if needed)

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 20:44

I've just realized I've done the whole public mourning thing.

(Gah!)

Donki · 20/05/2011 20:46

Serpent - and Wriggle

Viruses are canny wee things. They don't eat - they get you to do the eating for them. They take over your cells and make the cells make more viruses for them.

So, you are right, they can't eat margarine.

Donki · 20/05/2011 20:53

Can I have some of the wine Scout? It seems to be good stuff!

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 20:55

It's not carrot wine, I'm afraid, but you're more than welcome to it! Wine

UniS · 20/05/2011 20:56

Is it rhubarb Wine potent stuff.

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 20:58

I've not had rhubarb (or rhubarb wine) before -- what's it taste like?

Donki · 20/05/2011 20:59

UniS Why does you name say "practising piano" when my mouse cursor accidentally hovers over it?

oxeye · 20/05/2011 21:01

Oxhound once ate a tub of margarine when he was a puppy. In my small pup anxiety I took him to the vet. When I look back (from the experience of what he managed to eat and be fine with in later life) I am amazed the vet didn't die laughing Blush. In some ways OxHound was a virus....

CMOT- happy birthday Tiddler. Hope your hand is getting better too. Oxboy is counting down to the Big 5 and he has more than 2 months to go.... expectation is all. He has worked out his day to the nth degree and his party. He is not going to play the games, he is going to direct them for the others....

Serpent - boxes. I organise in a slightly anal way. Sets of playmobil have shoe boxes. General lego and playmobil has a plastic box. We have plastic boxes that pull out, not just lids, and a big cupboard so they can be hidden from sight but easy to get to. DIY shops are your friend. Less than 10% the cost of children "organiser" toy equivalents. That or IKEA but I lose the will to live there. Sylvanian sets would be a shoe box. General sylvanian stuff a small plastic box....

Texting - I love to text, it is a supplementary and useful form of communication but I also love the phone, the letter, the email - I just like to chat. No texting during labour however. Well, I didn't have a labour. A casual visit to hospital ended up with an emergency c-section 15 minutes later! But even after the birth it didn't occur to us to tell anyone, we just gazed and gazed and gazed at our wonderful son in a totally awestruck shell shocked way. Nobody even knew we were in hospital until about 6 hours after he was born....

Donki · 20/05/2011 21:01

Rhubarb!
Amazing stuff.
I was dragged up within the bounds of the West Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle - so we got to do all about it in Geography!
I used to love having a stick of raw rhubarb to crunch - dipped in sugar first of course.
And rhubarb and ginger jam is very yummy.
Rhubarb crumble......

Mmmmmmmmm

oxeye · 20/05/2011 21:02

scout I wanted to send you a separate message. I am so sorry for all you are going through and sorry not to have been on here more often sending support.

As to the blessing, just ask MIL if you should go and what are the others doing. Given that you are not close to SiL and BiL such that you would want to go anyway, it is entirely appropriate to follow the family flow....

oxeye · 20/05/2011 21:03

I am not a great one for prayer but Scout, I am thinking of you and your friends and family and those in need and holding you in my thoughts

Donki · 20/05/2011 21:04

Oh, your question Scout . It tastes like rhubarb. Sour and astringent (oxalic acid), needs sugar (or stewing with dates or something else sweet) to make it edible. It is really very nice. But I can't think of anything else that tastes quite like it!

oxeye · 20/05/2011 21:04

I'm up for rhubarb wine. We've had a rhubarb thing this week, so far I've made rhubarb crumble and rhubarb fool... two different ways...

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 21:06

Does rhubarb make your wee pink/red or am I thinking of beetroot or something else?

oxeye · 20/05/2011 21:09

nope. Only beetroot

Scout19075 · 20/05/2011 21:12

Thanks, oxeye (and everyone).

CMOT, has the doc given you any news/information?

I can't believe all of the tea room littles are turning five. I can't even fathom ToddlerScout at five! Heck, I can't even picture him at two yet.

Went to soft play this morning. Got to chatting with two moms who both had just-turned-two girls. They kept telling me how lovely and cute TS is and how 18 months is a great age like their daughters were ancient. I did have a good giggle to myself.

Tee, is LCT asleep? And if so, can you pass along some of your sleeping dust? ACK! What is up with the young one and his wacky sleep patterns the last two weeks or so?!

Tee2072 · 20/05/2011 21:16

Scout, lots of sympathy for everything. Next week has got to be better. At least some.

LCT is, indeed, asleep. He was down at 7 as he napped for three hours today. I don't think he's ever napped that long in his life. The issue with us is staying down. I have done everything I can think of but he keeps either waking throughout the night or at least very very early. MrTee and I are stumped.

Sending you lots and lots of sleepy dust.

Tee2072 · 20/05/2011 21:17

That sentence made no sense! I was surprised he went down at 730 because he napped for three hours.

I really should proof read. Especially when I've had Wine

teafortwo · 20/05/2011 21:24

can you get this to work on your 'puter serp...

www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/charlieandlola/games/#/lb/charlieandlola/germcounting I think Wriggle will like it.

and here is a birthday present for Tiddler...

www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/games/skid-the-scrambling-squirrel-game

Milk LOVES it and has got to the last level Blush - I felt like a bad Mummy on two fronts (1) because she had had enough time on it to get that good and (2) because I can only get past the first level so she is now better at something than me.
