Sons been invited to his first party! Gift etiquette?!

Hello! My sons started nursery recently and has been invited to a party this weekend, his first ever. I've just messaged his mum to say he is attending, I've never met them before though. Should I ask her what sort of thing her son likes? Or just choose myself? If so what is a good gift for a 4 year old boy these days?! Blush

I usually try to spend around £5. I try to buy something that maybe was £10 originally but is in the sale. I used to have a stock of presents for parties when I saw them on offer.

Tk maxx has got some great playmobile sets in that are a good price for kids presents, from £3-8...

You literally just quoted what I wrote, I didn’t say I didn’t want to spend that money.

I also read your original comment to mean you didn't want to spend more on a child's gift not that you couldn't afford to.

You have made this affordability but if you only spend £3 because that's what you can afford it seems odd that you wouldnt say that as that might be helpful to OP.

@RedWingBoots

Indeed, I had to surgically remove DC2 from the frozen books. The fact we already had the Pixar and Disney Princesses sets seemed to pass her by. I’m sure I’d have had the same issue with the Dobble set if we didn’t already have it!

@nightwakingmoon thank you, some lovely ideas!
I ended up buying a Melissa & Doug pizza set for £10 from Amazon, my budget was around £10! Was pleased with that find as love their toys

It's now my intention to make a gift box full of things I spot when out, Aldi had loads of usborne books for £1.99 recently! Though I agree kids might think a book is a boring thing to open it is a useful practical gift

I would also buy a gift from a charity shop I love going to them and have no problem buying a gift there! Hot wheels cars are well loved by my 3 year old 🤣

I think that present sounds lovely!!

I love books but it is always disappointing to get a book that you already have, so I don't give them as presents.

@PinkSyCo it's a shame if your children don't have value in books. My ds would be very happy to receive books.
