Nursery worker at DCs nursery has Covid, what's the likely hood of us getting it?

Hi there

My 15 month old DC attends nursery 4 days per week. We had a call Friday evening to say one of the carers in her bubble has Covid and my DC has to self isolate. The nursery will be closed now for the 10 day period.

What are the chances of our DC getting Covid and what are the chances of us getting it? Has anyone had a similar situation?

Our DC was in contact with the carer all week. They don't wear masks / visors (which we understand but probably increases the risk).

Can’t tell you the likelihood, but we had same situation before Christmas and our son didn’t catch it. Two others in his bubble did. NB they didn’t tell us whether it was kids or teachers, but I know at least one teacher had it

elQuintoConyo · 17/01/2021 09:12

Fairly high, I'd have thought.

MotherExtraordinaire · 17/01/2021 09:52

A friend's nursery all the staff caught it, but only 5 children out of the 60.

Bostonbullsmumma · 17/01/2021 10:00

We are in the same situation except I have had Covid already and can't face it hitting the household again! We haven't been told who has it in the nursery but suspect it's his nursery teacher. The person we are told has it mild and is recovering well which of course is good to hear.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/01/2021 19:35

Dd pre school had one case before Xmas

The 15 teachers and 80 children didn’t catch

Was literally the one case. And they child had an older sibling who caught it from school

Seems mainly under 5 don’t catch it or react poorly with it but can obv pass on if they have it but don’t show symptoms

You are probably likely to be ok

But obv t nah is why we have isolation

mynameiscalypso · 17/01/2021 19:36

DS' nursery have had this twice. Both times nobody else (including staff) has caught it.

sowiahaksnl · 17/01/2021 19:43

We had this before Xmas, 2 kids in contact with a positive case, neither got it.

disneymad85 · 18/01/2021 20:44

Thank you everyone. DC has developed Covid symptoms (cough and mild temp) so have booked a test for the morning.

Let the nursery know dc has symptoms

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/01/2021 21:13

Oh poor little sausage. Hopefully he'll only get a very mild case.

It's never too late to take some precautions for yourself. Keep the house ventilated and don't share spoons/cups etc with him. Obviously he's only wee so you'll be cuddling etc, but try to position yourself so he's not coughing or breathing directly into your face Wash your hands frequently

& cross your fingers!!

Let us know how you're getting on 💐

disneymad85 · 21/01/2021 11:32

The test was negative which is great, although I'm worried about accuracy as it's so hard to do on a wiggly toddler.

The temp went away but has come back 48 hours later. Would you assume that's the same illness as earlier in the week or something new and re-test?

The nursery have informed they now have 6 positive cases (didn't say staff or children).

My husband and I also feel unwell, sore throat and mild cough but not classic Covid symptoms.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2021 12:46

I would retest toddler abs get one for you abs hubby

gettingshitstraight · 21/01/2021 12:50

I'd definitely retest

StacySoloman · 21/01/2021 12:54

Test everyone as you have coughs (that is a classic symptom by the way?)

movingonup20 · 21/01/2021 13:13

Isolate for now and presume it's covid, if you get further symptoms get a test but if you isolate for 10 days it's not actually essential you test

Boonlark · 21/01/2021 13:15

Sore throat and cough came first for me, so you need to assume it's covid

disneymad85 · 21/01/2021 14:04

Thanks everyone

@StacySoloman
We do have a cough but it's not continuous as the NHS suggests it should be for Covid. But I wouldn't want to take any risks so we are assuming we have it currently.

@Boonlark
I have heard about a sore throat being a symptom even though it's not listed so we will all get tested in the morning.

We are self isolating anyway as DC has been in contact with someone at nursery who tested positive. That ends on Monday but don't want to send them back if there is any risk any of us having it so we will all go and get a test tomorrow to be sure so we can then start the period of self isolation again.

It seems to be rife in nurseries at the moment, 3 friends nurseries are also closed.

Hi Disney, so sorry to hear that! We just had the same with our children but it turned out nobody had it, (thank goodness!), only we obviously lost the childcare and we both work. There's a petition that one of the mums set up because we still had to pay nursery fees. Nurseries would probably go bust if they had to reimburse us, but we think the government should help families with small children... we've not been acknowledged very much so far.

I don't know if this is against the rules but I'm just about to mention the petition on another thread (if I'm allowed) and thought you might be interested in it too!

Feel free to sign and share! It's asking the gov to reimburse nursery fees when they're forced to close: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/568544

disneymad85 · 21/01/2021 15:37

Happy to sign it @Boomboomtown and glad you didn't end up catching it.

Elwynne · 21/01/2021 15:41

We've had this twice now and so far our LO hasn't caught it and neither have we. Thank goodness!

StacySoloman · 21/01/2021 15:45

@disneymad85 a “continuous cough” is defined as coughing a lot of an hour, or three episodes in 24 - so any cough that isn’t inhaling dust/water going down the wrong way basically.
If you describe yourself as having “a cough” you should test, however mild.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 21/01/2021 16:52

Did you manage to get tests booked in?

The people I know IRL had various other symptoms, but not the 'Top3'. I understand the picking those three originally, but whilst most people with Covid do get one of those symptoms, they are rarely the first symptoms. It's something that needs addressing!

disneymad85 · 21/01/2021 19:05

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants all booked for 8.30am tomorrow for the three of us.

OP posts:
Thefaceofboe · 24/01/2021 14:18

Did you get your results back @disneymad85?

disneymad85 · 24/01/2021 14:49

We were all negative Smile

So back to nursery as normal tomorrow until the next temperature or cold Hmm
