Changing table or no table

Hello all,
My nursery is too small for a changing table and set of drawers.
I'm thinking of using the top of the drawers as the changing table.
(I've read some people don't bother with changing tables)

I was wondering if anyone else does this?
Does anyone have any advice how I can secure the changing mat to the top of the drawers?

Thanks in advance
Laura

The thing is you can always change your mind. I managed for quite a while using mats on the floor, but we had wooden floors and eventually It was just too much for my knees. We rigged up a folding down shelf in the downstairs loo after that, no space for a free standing table.

I wonder is it your first baby? Changing tables really are a waste of time and money. A cheap mat (covered with a towel) or just using your knee is so much less faff. Two sections here and no problems.

I use mine but I had a c-section and PGP. I can now change him on the floor (7 months later) but couldn't have done without it at the start. I bought my cot second hand and it came with the changing table to match. I like it but I know not everyone uses one.

We never bothered.

You can get a basket to put the changing mat in if you dont want to just put a change mat on top of the drawers. I didn't bother with a change table with my first, just used the drawers, but have enjoyed having a higher change table with my second.

I always change in the bedroom on the change mat and did so until my older child was toilet trained. I never ever change on the floor unless I am out and have to.

Mat on the floor bed or draws or change baby on your lap dont waste money on units.

Mat on the floor for all 3 of mine.

Once they get out of the newborn stage and start wriggling more and rolling, it takes a fraction of a second for them to turn. I don't understand why you would add in that risk of having them up in the air, when it is easiest to change the on the floor.

Funnily enough I had a comment today from another mum today in town when she saw me changing my uncooperative big toddler over my knee.

She was amazed at how easy it is to still change a cloth nappy when the child is resisting.

We had a chest of drawers with changing mat space on top - never used it though.

Agree with the PP who said you are either downstairs or baby sleeps in your room so we just ended up using mat on the floor (with c section but have never had back problems).

The advice I wished I’d listened to is just buy a normal chest of drawers rather than ‘nursery furniture’ - the drawers we have are smaller and probably more expensive and like I said we didn’t use the table top changer anyway.

Our chest of drawers is a changing table. The changing mat sits in the top with shallow sides

I guess changing tables are a new thing that came about at the same times as disposable nappies. When it was all terry squares and nappy pins all mums changed nappies over their knee.

We bought a furniture set that had the chest of drawers with the changing table. It’s never been used. It just seemed awkward and we much preferred changing on the mat on the floor. I have a bad back (previously had surgery on it) and the mat on the floor caused no problems. Baby would have been off the changing table by 6 months as they are an expert roller. Nappy will be half on, holding onto baby and they’ll wriggle out / no way is a changing table safe for my child.
