Changing table or no table

Laura1348 · 19/06/2020 15:37

Hello all,
My nursery is too small for a changing table and set of drawers.
I'm thinking of using the top of the drawers as the changing table.
(I've read some people don't bother with changing tables)

I was wondering if anyone else does this?
Does anyone have any advice how I can secure the changing mat to the top of the drawers?

Thanks in advance
Laura

You can get ones that fit on the top of the cot. I found this really useful

firstimemamma · 19/06/2020 15:39

Changing mat on the floor was most practical for us. One upstairs and one downstairs.

MrsRogerLima · 19/06/2020 15:41

Lots easier for me as I struggled with my back post pregnancy.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/06/2020 15:42

Will you honestly take them upstairs for every nappy change?

Luzina · 19/06/2020 15:43

I used to put the changing mat on my bed or on the sofa.

peajotter · 19/06/2020 15:44

Changing mats are cheap enough. Get one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

I always preferred changing them on the floor, once I could bend! So much safer. Just store the mat under the cot/sofa/sink or wherever.

CupcakesK · 19/06/2020 15:45

You can get toppers to go on the drawers, but these can be pricey for essentially 4 pieces of wood! Would be quite easy to make on yourself if so inclined.

We only use this for night time changes as during the day we’re downstairs, so have a mat on the floor. Not worth spending a lot of money on, but definitely useful to have a changing surface somewhere near where the baby sleeps

NotMeNoNo · 19/06/2020 15:48

If you screw a small batten to the front edge of the drawer unit it will stop the mat sliding off and can be removed later.

Trailing1 · 19/06/2020 15:51

I had a three drawer chest with a cheap changing mat on top, worked okay for us.

Lazypuppy · 19/06/2020 16:26

We used a chest of drawers with mat on top as we took her up for every nappy change naturally, so pleased we spent the money.
Still using it now 2 years later for nappy changes

Pipandmum · 19/06/2020 16:33

I used something portable they you just laid across the top of furniture. Downstairs I just used a mat. While a changing table is nice, you do half if not more of the changing in another part of the house.

Laura1348 · 19/06/2020 16:59

@MrsRogerLima I did look at these but wasn't sure if they would work on a set of drawers - thanks for the link.

I think I may just invest in two mats and go from there. I'm not sure where I'll be changing or when- first time mum so all new to me.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

Why would they need to work on a set of drawers? You put them on a cot like in the photo. Do you not have a cot?

Placesrobe7099292 · 19/06/2020 20:29

Honestly don’t bother, get a changing mat and take it upstairs at night. Changing tables are a huge waste of money be don’t get used.

Tbh with DC2 she’s 9 months and I’ve used a changing mat 3 or 4 times, the rest it’s whereever she is and get the nappy on and off as fast as possible. Save the money

Laura1348 · 19/06/2020 20:37

@MrsRogerLima nope- no cot yet. Got a bedside sleeper for the first 6months.
I may look into the item you suggested when I do finally get one.

We never bothered with a changing table, we would always put mat on floor and change DS there as it is the safest place,no rolling off while you grab the one thing you forgot.

Laura1348 · 19/06/2020 20:39

@GlmPmum @Placesrobe7099292
This is the advice I've been hearing. It's just difficult to know- you feel you should have one, but I'm going to listen to advice. Thank you.

One mat downstairs and one upstairs. They don’t stay still for very long. By the time LO starts rolling it is safer to have them on a mat on the floor.

StoneSourFan · 19/06/2020 20:56

Changing table, my little one is 11 months and always used it. I don't change her anywhere else in the house. I find it much easier and it's more ergonomic for your back.
I know a lot of people change babies downstairs or on their bed but I never have. It's just as easy to take them upstairs to their room. I found it easy to transition my little one into her room as she was so used to getting changed and dressed in there x

Voice0fReason · 19/06/2020 22:24

My DH made a top for a set of drawers with a lip around the edge and we put a changing mat on that. It stayed upstairs and I used it for almost all nappy changes.
I did have a changing mat downstairs as well but that hardly ever got used. I loved having the changing table, it was so much more comfortable to use.
I had to go upstairs to use the toilet so it really wasn't any extra bother going up for nappy changes.

iVampire · 19/06/2020 22:33

Changing mat on the floor - the baby can’t roll off if already on the floor

But if you can’t manage scrambling down to floor level, I’d go for top of an existing item of furniture or cot-top gadget,

PrayingandHoping · 19/06/2020 22:39

My baby is 8 months and we ALWAYS use the changing table that is on top of her chest of drawers (mamas and papas. When we just want the drawers it comes off)

Had a c section. No way would I have been able to change her on the floor.

If you organise your bits around you you never would leave the baby unattended on the table

Wouldn't be without it. One of my absolute essentials.

madminimoomin · 19/06/2020 22:47

We just have the changing mat on top of hemnes Ikea drawers in her room. She always gets changed and dressed on that, even now 6 months on.
Top 2 drawers have nappies/creams etc.

Ludways · 19/06/2020 22:52

I used a changing mat on the floor for dc1, got an over cot changer for dc2, used it once and went back to changing mat on floor.
