Am really cross about the nursery school trip.....

they have decided to do a trip next Tues to Gullivers world. they dont have enough room on the mini bus and so half the kid arent going.

They have decided to just have the children who are regulars at nursery on Tuesdays and to hell with the rest. Unfortunately that means my ds doesnt get to go.

Now, it is fine that there isnt enough room on the bus but wouldnt it make sense to either

a) hire a bus so all the kids can go
b) split the class into half so half go on a Tues and the other half go on a Thurs?

I feel so peeved about it but dont know how to handle it. I asked about it and they said the letters had gone to all the other parents and so far there had been no cancellations. DS doesnt know about it yet but I feel so cross for all the children who will miss out. ds is 4.

so, what would you do and would you be peeved.

DS2 is off to the monkey gardens and ds1 wants to know if he can go!!

. Can they not give you the option of going along with him separately ?

StinkyPete · 04/08/2006 17:57

if the only issue is transport - is it possible for other families to travel independently and meet up there? my ds's nursery did a trip last year to a zoo; i don't travel well on coaches (travel sick) so we drove by car and met them there with no prob.

collision · 04/08/2006 17:58

Dh said I should do that and go in the car separately.

It just seems they want the easy way out in not bothering to take all of them.

i think I probably will do that but am still cross!!

I think it's completely wrong to only take some of the children, what kind of message is that giving to the children. When we were in Scotland Ds1's nursery also had a space problem with the big bus, but that was solved by other mother's going by car. If they don't have enough personal for the trip, then they should have asked for parent volunteers. I'd go so at least your ds get's to enjoy himself with his little friends.

happyhippy · 04/08/2006 18:21

we recently had a trip and we dont have a minibus so we had staff driving who are insured to take others kids but we also had parents go with a member of staff and some kids after their parents had signed a consent form

Chandra · 04/08/2006 18:39

I think they could have hired a minibus, I understand that some kids will miss in some things depending on the day, but not if its going to be something so flashy as a school trip, especially when all children know about it.

FrannyandZooey · 04/08/2006 18:40

Unbelievable. This is so crap I am speechless.

WideWebWitch · 04/08/2006 18:42

v crap I agree. Either do it or don't.

julienetmum · 04/08/2006 21:55

Would your son be in nursery that day. If so then he should go on the trip. If not then I can't see why the staff should accomodate extra children going on that day just becasue of a trip.

Dd attended a nursery part time and I accepted that there were sometimes activities she missed out on if they happened to occur on her days off.

They are registered for 36 children but as so many are p/t have far more than that on role so would never have been able to staff it.

Calista · 04/08/2006 22:03

They should have probably put a note on the bottom of the slip saying if your child does not usually attend on a Tuesday, but you would like them to go on the trip, they can go PROVIDING a parent/carer attends with them.

This has always been standard practice anywhere I've worked. They usually struggle for staff on trips with the usual number of children that are in that day, never mind any extras, because of ratios. But it shouldn't be a problem for extra children to come along as long as they have someone to come with them, and the parent pays for themself as well as the child to go on the coach/minibus.

threebob · 04/08/2006 22:08

I don't care less if ds's nursery does something on a day he doesn't go. Gullivers world is a public place if you want to meet up with them.

But personally I like to go places with ds and maybe one of his friends. More children is my idea of hell, it's all toilet stops and opening lunchboxes, and no actual enjoying yourself.

FrannyandZooey · 04/08/2006 22:44

Hold on, is your ds going to be in nursery on the Tuesday? I thought you meant that there would be some children left behind while others went, because they were not regular Tuesday attenders. That's what I was speechless about.

Well, it doesn't sound so bad. I would probably be disappointed but it seems a little much to be actually annoyed.

mrsbang · 04/08/2006 23:12

Monkey Forest at Trentham? My boys enjoyed their visit, take him there instead.

jasper · 04/08/2006 23:57

I don't think it is a big deal.

there must be considerations of nursery staff to child ratios or something.
It probably could just as easily have beenThursday kids only.

This sort of thing is standard at our (fab) nursery and school. There are often not enough resources to go round and they make an arbitrary choice (perhaps toss a coin?) for who gets whatever and who does not.
It is a valuable life lesson you might as well learn sooner rather than later

Sorry to hijack this, but I worked in a Nursery before, and I remember going on a trip with some of the children, and thinking that surely all the children should have had booster seats or car seats? Anyone agree with me on this or know if any Nurseries actually ask parents to bring them in? My Nursery didnt even suggest to parents that they could use them. (I let slip to the parents of the 2 yr olds - and they drove them there themselves!)

Christie, that's how I MEANT to put it!

SueW I am on holiday this week (near Brighton) - lots more time to post!

collision · 07/08/2006 00:03

After thinking about this over the weekend, I am still peeved.

Yes, I am peeved for ds as he wont be going but I am also peeved for the rest of the class who arent going either. Obv, if ds was going I wouldnt be as peeved.

To me a nursery trip is for everyone and not just for the ones who happen to go on a Tuesday. As we would be the ones forking out, why couldnt they ask some parents to take cars or hire a coach for all the kids.

DS is leaving nursery in a few weeks as he starts school in September and I just think it would have been nice if all the leavers could have gone together on a trip.

As I said, ds doesnt know about it so he doesnt know he isnt going but I do feel sad about it and cross that the teachers didnt even tell us that he wouldnt be going. I found out by mistake and then all the teachers looked embarrassed about it.

i think you ar right to be annoyed.
logistics may be difficult but it is thier job to sort it out if planning a trip.

theyshould have hired a larger bus or split the group and taken them on two seperate outings.
i hope they aren't using your fee's to subsidise the trip? If so i would demand my money back seeing as your child isnt even able to go.

i would defiantly put in a formal complaint. i know you say your Ds doesnt know but what if he goes to nursary next week and one of his freinds mentions the trip? it is unfair.

daysoftheweek · 07/08/2006 01:41

Not sure understand you correctly in both the nurseries my 2 go to it has always been routine for some children to go on trips and others to stay behind, they pretty much take it in turns (I certainly don't keep a record). If not no one would go (ratios etc) can't really see why you're that upset if your son isn't even in nursery that day. Will he ever know? Will he remember for that long if he does find out?
