Molluscum contagiosum

DS is completely covered with red bumps, in appearance it looks like severe chickenpox.
I took him to the doctor who said its MC and that even though its very contagious it is harmless and he can continue going to nursery.

Nothing can really be done and these bumps will go away without treatment in the next 12 - 18 MONTHS!

I'm a bit worried about what the nursery and other parents will think about this? I've had the all clear to send him by the doctor but it looks horrendous. Has anyone got any experience from this?

No he can't eat much, only vanilla ice cream. His mouth is full of these too!

The more I think about this the more convinced I get we got the wrong diagnosis.

Looking at it it looks more like eczema herpeticum than MC.

The weird thin is that it's not itchy and he hasn't had a temperature.

it really really doesnt sound like molluscum so get him checked out again

To be honest, if it is getting worse I would consider taking him to the hospital. Perhaps they can give him stronger treatment? Or a definite diagnosis? I am not medically qualified by the way so feel free to take me with a pinch of salt.

Do you think it would be silly to take him to the children's a&e tomorrow? He is completely covered with these absolutely everywhere but has not got a temperature or any other serious symptoms. Makes me worried nonetheless!

I'm not a doctor but have had 4 DCs with MC - this does not sound the same at all.

Definitely go back to the GP - if there was a virus going around nursery, that sounds far more likely.

Good luck, it sounds awful for both of you.

No I dont think it would be silly, if he is still getting worse tomorrow then go. I understand your worry.

Hopefully he will be feeling better tomorrow and no more spots have appeared. I have my fingers crossed for you.

MC raised spot with what is called an umbilicated plug in the middle. This looks like a creamy white middle. Only scabs on scratching but not so common. Do you have a picture of a few spots in a non identifiable area?

That doesn't sound right to me either.
Poor little boy.

Are you sure it isn't Hand, Foot and Mouth? My DS had this and it came on suddenly and the spots all over his hands (and throat) were a giveaway. He was so ill with it that we had to take him to A&E as the out of hours doctor had no clue what to do. Meanwhile DS' friend got it and only had a couple of spots. Any chance it could be HF&M?

I've got photos but I'm on my phone so don't know how to share them.

A&E has been vetoed by DH as its not a real emergency, will go to out of hours again tomorrow instead.

He first got the spots in arms, legs and abdomen, didn't get them on hands, feet and mouth until this morning.

Ouch! Oh that looks so sore.
That doesn't look like any MC I have ever seen.

StarlightMcKenzie · 13/07/2013 22:39

That's NOT MC.

How ill is he?

I would consider A&E tonight tbh.

You've checked for meningitis symptoms?

Report
solveproblem · 13/07/2013 22:41

He's not ill at all starlight, it's definitely uncomfortable for him but its not itchy and he hasn't got a temperature. It's nice to hear you say you don't think it's MC as it confirms what I'm thinking.

I'm going to go to sleep now but will make an appointment as soon as I wake up. Will let you know what they say this time!

it doesnt look like molluscum as MC looks more like little warts.

DS had something like this a couple of months ago - not ill at all, spread really rapidly and started to fade after about 10 days. The weirdest thing was how 'well' he was even though it spread quite alarmingly.
It came back a couple of weeks later, much less and faded more quickly. Despite about 3 visits to the doctor we never got a clear diagnosis.

He had had MC previously and it was very different, much slower to spread.

Good luck!

does anyone know how to enlarge photos?
Top middle one i can see why they might say MC as appears slightly pearlesent with creamy middle (umbilicated) though big picture with foot in front appears to show patches in elbows that are larger and a deep redish colour. Are the tops of the spots blitser like? not typical for MC or ezcema herpetiform from picture.
Glad he is well in himself though.
