Do you have sensory issues with your hair?

I don't dye my hair any more. I don't like the hairdressers because of the chatting, but I quite like the head massage. Because I was leaving such a gap between visits, I'd end up with huge roots so it wasn't worth it.

I just wear my hair down or in a bobble most of the time. I use clips on my fringe to hold it out of my eyes because hair going in my face makes me irrationally annoyed.

I tried the curly girl method as I do have a wave but it was so awful. I cannot stand any product in my hair at all. My head becomes itchy and I'm really irritated till I can wash it.

Yes and I can’t wear body moisturiser either apart from the Vaseline spray on my legs

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 20/02/2022 10:48

I can't stand it in my face. It makes me feel too hot in the summer. I have to tie it up then bits fall out and end up round my face and in my mouth and eyes.

kobacat1981 · 20/02/2022 11:00

I can't stand going to hairdresser and colour my own hair at home. I also find having an oily scalp incredibly irritating and sometimes wash my hair everyday. Any hairdresser I ever went to always told me I could train my hair not to be oily, but it never worked and to be honest I find not washing my hair after 2 days kinda gross

Susu49 · 20/02/2022 11:02

Yes, I dislike it falling on my face and often when I wear it up it's because the feel of it bothers me. I've thought about cutting it short but have hated it when I've done it before.

BoardLikeAMirror · 20/02/2022 12:11

I fiddle with my hair all the time unless I put it into a bun. I have a particular way of twisting a strand to create tension so that it will make a loop which 'clicks' and I find that incredibly soothing/satisfying.

As I child I used to like putting a strand in my mouth and 'crunching' the hairs between my teeth - I was always getting told off and threatened that I'd get a hairball in my intestines - which was nonsense as I didn't swallow anything.

I hate anyone else touching my hair- haven't been to a hairdresser since June 1989.

I don't have any issues with products - in fact, I'm a sucker for a new hair product in the search for a holy grail one that will give me really great hair. I don't like chemical dyes but I use henna.

Nortd · 20/02/2022 15:21

I have to have it short, the minute it gets below chin length it starts making me feel sick.
I never go to hairdressers, it's my idea of he'll Grin dh does my hair and occasionally I just shave it really short and let it grow back out l.

PangoPurrl · 20/02/2022 22:19

I have to really psych myself up to wash mine, I really dislike having water on my head and in my hair, and being wet anywhere in any way that I can't dry immediately. Which feels utterly ridiculous but there you go! It's gotten really long which I love, but I'm having it all cut off in a couple of weeks as the longer it gets the less I wash it, and it basically gets really greasy before I force myself to wash it and I hate being such a minger!!

I have no such issues with the rest of me, in fact I'm the opposite with my hands in that I've really loved that it's now reasonable to wash them constantly!!

FeliciaMcAspieGreer · 23/02/2022 14:24

I like the idea of having really short hair or wearing a headscarf because of sensory issues around hair. Occasionally when I'm cooking I'll wrap my hair up in a scarf to stop it smelling of cooking and I love the feeling of it being contained.

But I'm also very conscious of the need to fit in and pass as ND so mostly just put up with having a pony tail.

FeliciaMcAspieGreer · 23/02/2022 14:25

That should be pass as NT!

FeliciaMcAspieGreer · 23/02/2022 14:29

I recently found a hairdresser I love, because he has such amazing social skills that I feel comfortable going for the first time ever.

Does anyone know what I mean? Very occasionally you meet someone who has such great intuition that they seem to intuitively understand your autism (without being told) and account for it in their interactions. Those people are like golddust, I've only met a few in my life

VanGoghsDog · 23/02/2022 14:37

I don't like getting hair in my mouth - in the wind the other day a clump flew into my mouth and made me gag. I'm not keen on it being in my face either.

I also have very sensitive skin and can feel if a hair falls onto my neck or down my back or cleavage and then I spend ages scrabbling at my skin to catch it and get rid of it. I can feel the tiniest of hairs, drives me crazy.

caranations · 23/02/2022 14:47

I absolutely hate the sensation of my hair touching anywhere near my face or neck, and I have it scraped tight in a ponytail / scrappy bun all the time to keep it out of the way.

Like @VanGoghsDog it drives me mad if I have any hair caught inside my clothes too. And don't get me started on itchy labels. Unbearable.

LilyRed · 23/02/2022 23:49

I hate hair on my face so I always have it in a big clasp or in a bun: I wind it up then poke it down the back of the pillow at night as I hate it on my neck too. I don't mind water on my head, but it took me ages to cope with it on my face - swimming helped with that!

I have not met many hairdressers I feel comfortable with. The woman who used to cut my hair in England would give me her mending to do whilst she cut my hair! We got on well as she didn't make inane conversation with me, but then she had to move on after a divorce Sad.

I have not found anyone I like up here in Scotland at all sadly so I hack at it myself and let it be the colour it wants - I used to be blonde but seem to have gone auburn-ish and grey Grin

SuperSocks · 24/02/2022 01:12

Disclaimer: No idea if I am ND or not!

I hate my hair down/touching my cheeks, and always just wear it tied back, even in bed. Which is weird because until I was around 12 I had it down all the time! I used to suck it ( Envy ) until nail biting took over!

I hate having any sort of product on my hair! The frizz drives me mad but the greasy feeling that products lead to is worse.

Does anyone scratch their scalp, not because it's actually itchy but as a sort of habit?

VanGoghsDog · 24/02/2022 01:19

I scrape and dig at my scalp constantly. Annoy myself. I think it's a stim.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/02/2022 01:19

DD does. One particular patch. For years. She has a perma-crust there.

SuperSocks · 24/02/2022 01:20

@VanGoghsDog

I'm glad I'm not the only one!! Not that I'd wish it on anyone of course, but it's nice to not feel alone!

SuperSocks · 24/02/2022 01:21

@MrsTerryPratchett It's all over for me. I'm prone to hairloss anyway and it's really not helping!

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/02/2022 01:24

I'm more of a hair tweezer/puller. Which I think is also why I bit my nails for years, I would 'neaten' my nails, just like my hairline until I was bleeding.

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 01:28

I can’t think properly until I’ve tied it back. Making a bun or wha king it in a clip is part of my “settling down to work” ceremony. Not mad keen on people touching it but I’ve got better.

Bahhhhhumbug · 24/02/2022 02:34

Can't stand hair clinging to my skin when lm wet, in the shower or just got out. Then it clings to your fingers as they're wet too, so you transfer it to your other hand but it clings to that too. Really freaks me out and makes me irrationally angry, can't bear the feel of hair, even one, sticking to me

VanGoghsDog · 24/02/2022 09:22

I don't pull my head hair, but all other hairs I pull out. I make my eyebrows sore by scratching at them. When I was a kid I pulled my eyelashes out til my eyelids bled (I still pull them but not to nothing any more).

I wish I could stop doing it but if I see a hair standing out on my arm I have to pull it, feel any short eyebrow hairs coming through, I have to pick at them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/02/2022 15:05

Eyelashes for me as well. Gah.

PinkPupZ · 03/03/2022 22:36

I can't stand the feel of it on my face. Couldn't manage a fringe. Have to tie it up.

Thenose · 03/03/2022 22:48

Well, certainly not a fringe; it'd make me want to rip my face off. However, while I hate the feeling of hair on my face, I enjoy the feel of it swishing behind my head. I like picking it up and letting it fall or shaking my head and feeling the movement on my scalp.
