Pulp are the MOST underrated band ever!

I love them so much!

Whose with me?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/11/2010 19:25

Is Jarvis a perve?

A perve in a good way, though right?

kittya · 14/11/2010 00:14

Oh, a perve in a very good way!! Wink

LoopyLoops · 14/11/2010 00:17

You're wrong. Gomez is the most underrated band. Closely followed by Manu Chao.

WildPansy · 14/11/2010 00:27

Jarvis = supreme perve of Sheffield and all the cosmos. In a very good way.

kittya · 14/11/2010 00:30

No one can write like him.

Back to the OP though, I dont think they were ever underrated???? They maybe got pushed to the side abit due to the Oasis/Blur made up competition but they were never underrated. They were big!!

Olifin · 14/11/2010 09:50

I'm afraid he is a bit of a beardy old trout these days. This is how I like to remember the Jarvster.

His lyrics really did give me the horn. I love all that dark kitchen-sink drama.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/11/2010 12:23

That is a marvellous picture Olifin. I would very much like to get him a Miss World-style sash labelling him Supreme Perv Of Sheffield And All The Cosmos. :o

So - what is Pulp's perviest song? It's quite the competition. I Spy always frankly gives me the slight creeps. But Babies is just plain rude...My final vote goes to Pencil Skirt though I think. If only for the line about her parents!

WildPansy · 15/11/2010 19:27

Pencil Skirt, I agree. This thread prompted me to sing it to my DP as we went for a lovely riverside walk at the weekend Grin.

Am happy to hand craft that sash. I suppose it should be made of nylon and woodchip.

Olifin · 15/11/2010 22:28

Oooh yes, Wildpansy what a great idea. Bylon and woodchip indeed.

I Spy is a total masterpiece, IMHO. But I agree not the perviest. Pencil Skirt could well be the one although Acrylic Afternoons was also quite wrong, mainly because of the groaning and squeaking and muttering about cups of tea.

BelligerentGhoul · 15/11/2010 22:31

Lots of brilliant songs and a few duff ones. My favourite is Something Changed. When I was in hospital before having dd2 I listened to it over and over and over and over again because his voice was so reassuring!

kittya · 15/11/2010 22:40

whats the one about her new bloke seeing her in her underwear?

Olifin · 15/11/2010 22:46

It's called Underwear kittya That is a great song too.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 10:14

Yes, it's quite a scary song really because it's all about this girl who's got into a situation with a man where she feels she has to "go through with" sex, and how she wishes she could get out of there. And then at the end he says he'd give his whole life to see her stood there in her underwear. Confused

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 10:33

this thread takes me back... did anyone else see them at V96? man, they were amazing. I was 15. I lost my friend, I danced alone...

I just remember the way he sang 'Live Bed Show' - so poignant. They were sort of bowing out then, and I remember Jarvis saying 'we're gonna go away for a bit now... and we'll be the kind of band only your older brother can remember...' Sad

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 10:42

i should add i was also the weird britpop girl in my year!

in fact dd1 &dd2 owe their entire existences to Blur, Pulp, Oasis, Radiohead & the Stone Roses, as that's what dh and used to chat each other up about on the walk home

(he was bass player in the school indie band) [swoon]

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 10:56

You got a bass player eh? Envy
That is really lovely. You better bring them up to know the songs! (though maybe not just yet eh?)

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 10:57

and it seems a bit sad to say 'oh that was music for a specific time and place. it hasn't aged well' because it never seemed to fit the time and place even back then... as others have said, all my mates thought i was a saddo when they were all into Another Level, Take That, Boyzone and all that shit...

Pulp were big, but only in Indie circles... I was surrounded by people who just tuned them out.

Yet a band like the Arctic Monkeys (esp their first album) sound like the bastard nephews of Jarvis and are liked by pretty much everyone, so he must've been doing something right...

I'll stop waffling on, as i don't think anyone's listening anyway.

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 10:59

yeah, he had the Alex James floppy hair n everything. i keep on at him to grow it again, but he won't Hmm

as for the kids listening to it, sometimes i think gangster rap would be more appropriate...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 11:05

Ha, I am listening :o

I agree, I have literally met two people in my life who like pulp. One in about 1995, and one in about 2005! I'll never forget talking to gorgeous older boy about music and it was when it was all "Blur or Oasis?", and I said "I prefer Pulp anyway" and he agreed :o

Seriously, should have just put an electronic tag on him and kept him for when I was old enough :)

I was amazed by the Artic Monkeys stardom, in a good way. There was a lovely explosion of half decent music a few years ago - 2004/5ish? Then I mark its downfall from that bloody awful "Monster" song. Now I'm just waffling...

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 11:11

you're dead right there; i remember back in 2004/5 before dd1 was born, i was working in this stultifying office, the only upside of which was we were allowed to have XFM on in the background, and I remember thinking 'wow, there's loads of stuff i like... Kasabian, Artic Monkeys etc, maybe i'm not so old, its almost like Britpop all over again'

and then as quickly as it started, it seemed to vanish and get replaced by all that stuff that sounds like its being sung by a deaf robot! Glad i'm not the only one who noticed.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 11:16

It was the same in the 90s though wasn't it. Absolutely awash with shite, couple of good years 1994-1996ish, then loads more shite with a few good songs here and there. I can still tell you which tracks I would fast forward to on my copies of Now 34, 35, 36 etc Blush Grin.

(Something Changed, Nancy Boy, This is Hardcore, Neighbourhood, How Bizarre, Don't Speak, Your Woman, Beetlebum, She's A Star, Something For the Weekend etc)

IntergalacticHussy · 16/11/2010 11:22

i had now 36, on cassette! them were the days [wistful]

you're right though, I remember watching TOTP, just praying for something decent to come on...

one of the highlights of that decade was getting TOTP tickets and getting the shock of my life when they announced Ian Brown would be on in a minute... talk about serendipitous!

Olifin · 16/11/2010 14:50

Ian Brown! Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba... {repeat ad infinitum}

ledodgy · 16/11/2010 14:54

God I loved Pulp , loved most indie bands from that era. It's not the same now however it probably would be if I was still going to an indie club every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. It's good music mixed with nostalgia that makes it great music. Smile

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 15:09

I loved The Supernaturals too - now I really am the only person who remembers them!
