May be showing my age here by using the term single! But for me it was Lay your love on me by Racey.
So wish it was something cooler!

Dean Friedman "Lucky Stars" when I was about 4 I think

I still have it but I don't have a record player anymore

Fliight · 18/04/2010 08:47

Prince Charming by Adam and the Ants. I was 7 and it was 30p.

Fliight · 18/04/2010 08:48

BettyTurnip, I still have that - though it was my sister's!

maresedotes · 18/04/2010 08:48

The first record I remember was "Sleepy Joe" by Herman Hermits. It must have been bought for me though because I would only have been 3ish!

purepurple · 18/04/2010 08:51

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Played it to death, then a couple of weeks later, I dropped it and broke it in 2.
My next one was I was Made For Dancing by Leif Garrett. I fancied him like crazy

The Lovely Leif

sungirltan · 18/04/2010 08:56

i can't remember!! though it was probably in about 89/90

whirlygig · 18/04/2010 09:05

Runaway by BonJovi.

Where are my white fringe boots?

QueenThistle · 18/04/2010 17:33

I first single I remember having was Cliff Richard's - Mistletoe and Wine on record .

But I think my mum bought it for me...can't remember.

The first album I remember buying with my own money was Metallica's Black Album on cassette from Woolies.

DramaInPyjamas · 18/04/2010 17:41

First single I bought with my own money was 'Trouble' by Shampoo. In 1994. From Our Price. On cassette.

UnquietDad · 18/04/2010 17:47

"Making Your Mind Up" by Bucks Fizz. I made my mum buy it for me. Although the first I bought with my own pocket-money was a little bit cooler - "Maid of Orleans" by OMD.

DottyDash · 18/04/2010 17:50

Heavy D and the Fat Boys - Now that we've found love Oh the shame!!

UnquietDad · 18/04/2010 17:51

Are they not just the Boys? or Boyz? I don't remember their name referring to their corpulence, although Heavy himself was a bit on the tubby side.

DottyDash · 18/04/2010 17:55

It is a very non-pc name these days isn't it?! My old single definitely refers to them as the 'fat' boys though - their multi-coloured PVC raincoats did nothing for slim-lining their figures.....

UnquietDad · 18/04/2010 17:56

I thought the Fat Boys were someone else - they did "Wipeout" with the Beach Boys in 1988/89.

DottyDash · 18/04/2010 18:00

I stand completely corrected! You are absolutely right....I feel as if a certain part of my childhood has just died, could have sworn they were the Fat boys!!!

WaitingForGok · 18/04/2010 18:00

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. I drove my parents bonkers singing along and prancing around living room in nightie.

choosyfloosy · 18/04/2010 18:02

Stand and Deliver by Adam and the Ants. I still had Prince Charming on my 40th birthday CD.

tarty you were way cooler to get Antmusic!

bluejeans · 18/04/2010 18:07

I was given a £5 record token and bought:

Blondie - Atomic
Abba - I have a dream
The Nolans - I'm in the mood for dancing
Buggles - Living in the plastic age
Madness - My Girl

...and still had change. I think I had fairly eclectic taste for a 10 yr old...

Also remember at the time I thought you had to ask for singles by their number in the charts as if you were ordering from a chinese take away, and used to study the list of the Top 40 on the counter

RaggedRobin · 18/04/2010 18:13

irene cara - fame

i decorated the plain white sleeve with glitter - i'll bet that was good for the vinyl!

pissovski · 18/04/2010 19:33

Karma Chameleon - Culture Club

Desiderata · 18/04/2010 19:34

I was quite old when I bought my first single; maybe 11 or 12.

Anyhow, it was Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello. Still a great track to this day.

I haven't got a clue what the lyrics mean.

fruitshootsandheaves · 18/04/2010 19:35

Total Eclipse of The Heart by Bonnie Tyler

I was almost 16 and it took me about an hour to pluck up the courage to go into the shop and ask for it. I don't know why...I was so scared of everything.

shockers · 18/04/2010 19:39

The first single I asked for (and got) was "Two Little Boys" by Rolf Harris. The first one I bought with pocket money was a double A side of "Congratulations" and "Power to All Our Friends" by Cliff Richard.

My musical tastes have changed somewhat over the years but Rolf still brings a tear to my eye!

Desiderata · 18/04/2010 19:40

Two Little Boys still makes me cry to this day!

And Cliff was my first album. It was called 'All My Love.'

shockers · 18/04/2010 19:43

purepurple That's taken me right back... love the hip movement
