Right, currently listening to the Ramones, Johnny Cash, Butthole Surfers, Social Distortion, Amebix, Doom, early Metallica, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Avail, Bad Religion and Husker Du.

Any suggestions for newer (well post '95!) bands?!

Scouting For Girls
The Feeling
The Killers
The Pigeon Detectives
The Kooks
The Script

could be maybe worth a look on You Tube?

daftpunk · 18/01/2009 17:09

fleet foxes are brilliant.

janeite · 18/01/2009 17:11

Fleet Foxes album is a fiver in HMV at the mo.

Malkuth · 18/01/2009 17:31

Thank you all! Trouble with YouTube is I am not sure where to start but will give Fleet Foxes etc a go and take it from there.

butthole surfers?? really??!!!

That entire list of Janeites is good and ion a similar vein is Mumra (think that's how its spelled) have heard a few track sof theirs and they are good

have you tried last.fm? it's a music networking thing. you can look up bands you like and it will give you loads of similar stuff - full tracks, videos and excerpts, then if it's someone you like you can go off to their myspace and do some more free listening to make sure.

if you play a lot of music on your computer/ipod it's even better as you can get it to log everything you play and provide recommendations and musical "neighbours" based on that, it really is like having mates with similar taste and you can come up with all sorts of interesting new (and old) stuff.

Malkuth · 18/01/2009 17:50

Yep saw them live a couple of months ago and was reminded of how much I liked them. Sad but true!

Last.fm sounds great. Will check that out too.

Husker Du....

I loved Husker Du....

Just spent a few minutes scouting through my extensive iTunes list looking for some post 95 suggestions, and have drawn a bit of a blank.

Sad old git that I am....

..unless I can stretch to new songs by old bands. Very old bands. My Wedding Present obsession is a matter of record...

MegBusset · 18/01/2009 18:41

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (first three albums anyway)
Queens Of The Stone Age
Sugar/Bob Mould solo stuff
Deftones
Enter Shikari
The Klaxons
Jets To Brazil
The Hold Steady

mrsruffallo · 18/01/2009 18:47

Bright Black Morning Light are wicked, check them out

janeite · 18/01/2009 19:07

Oh I love The Wedding Present! Love David Gedge! Love his little hairy knees!

janeite · 18/01/2009 19:07

Op - you may also like Kings Of Leon.

cyteen · 18/01/2009 19:20

Ooh mrsruffallo I love Brightblack Morning Light (in fact, have we had this exchange before? ) I saw them live in Barcelona in 2007, they were wonderful.

OP - try Diane Cluck if you like Joni Mitchell, excellent wail-folk singer songwriter. O Vanille is a great album.

Nomeansno are one of my favourite bands ever, get Wrong if you want to hear their best stuff but latest album All Roads Lead To Ausfahrt is pretty good too and Dance of the Headless Bourgeousie is hilarious.

Don't know if you ever listen to Fugazi (who are great) but one of their main members has a sort of punk/folk duo on the side called The Evens - their first self-titled album is excellent (don't be put off by the punk/folk description which I acknowledge makes it sound ghastly ).

Check out Dalek for noisy doomy rock/hiphop mash up.

Red Sparowes are my pick of the post rock bunch, they make epic instrumental songs with stupid pretentious titles but which are still very good indeed.

Will have a think and come back with some more.

Malkuth · 18/01/2009 19:22

Yes I like Kings of Leon, Bob Mould and Deftones. Had completely forgotten about And You Will Know Us ... and they are one of the bands an ex-roommate played a lot.

Retiredgoth have seen your Wedding Present posts! Thought they were OK but was more into the Gaye Bykers on Acid/Crazyhead type bands. Also Black Flag/Minor Threat etc although had a soft spot for Voice of the Beehive. I am reminding myself of loads of bands now. I have been music-starved!

Alice Donut are another I have just thought of too, and have a feeling they may have reformed.

I also love early Metallica and my recent find is Cage the Elephant. Have a listen on Youtube first. Erm who else? Velvet Revolver are quite amazing too (ex G N R memebers Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum)and I love Chris Conrnells latest album too.

cyteen · 18/01/2009 19:26

Ooh, have thought of another couple - Made Out Of Babies and Battle Of Mice. Both fronted by the same amazing female singer. The latest MOOB album is awesome.

cyteen · 18/01/2009 19:26

Oxbow? Jesu?

Notalone · 18/01/2009 19:27

sorry - Chris Cornell

Malkuth · 18/01/2009 19:28

I really am out of touch! Loads of great new suggestions. Thank you all- off to myspace/youtube/lastfm in a mo!

Marthasmama · 18/01/2009 19:29

P J Harvey, obviously, The Kills are pretty good too. Um....QOTSA. Jane Weaver, very good folksy singer, Martha Wainwright (cool voice).

Malkuth · 18/01/2009 19:30

Chris Cornell was lovely. Will have to google him to see how he is aging. Got a Mark Lanegan/someone else cd for Xmas that I believe a small child has run off with so will also have to do a proper tidy-up and find that.

OP posts:
cyteen · 18/01/2009 19:30

You might like Joanna Newsom too, another weirdy-voiced wordy-songed solo artist She's very 'Marmite' iyswim, but I love her.

Notalone · 18/01/2009 19:33

Chris cornell is lik a fine wine imo - he gets better with age .

If you listen to Cage the Elephant on You tube start with In One Ear. Its fab!

Marthasmama · 18/01/2009 20:04

I used to be utterly in love with Chris Cornell and was allowed to run away with him if the oppotunity presented itself. But....having looked at more recent pics I think he's looking a little goofy in old age bless him. Still he has a voice that turns your knees to jelly. Mmmmmmmmm.......
