Gene - I liked 'em

I'm fessing up to this one like it's a guilty pleasure. I still do like their stuff. So did John Peel.

At the time they were criticised a lot for being Smiths wannabes. I still love Sleep Well Tonight and Olympian

Don't think they really got the success they deserved. Who's with me?

Me and DW used to throw shapes to this. Good stops and starts for optimum posing.

Couldn't really dance to Gene could you?

sfxmum · 05/08/2008 14:37

I have been listening McAlmont and Buttler a lot because my daughter is obsessed with a couple of their songs and keeps asking me to play them over and over again, and this all started with random play on ipod

frankiesbestfriend · 05/08/2008 14:39

Oooh yeah
And this

DaDaDa · 05/08/2008 14:41

Sleeper were a decent enough pop band IMO. She had a good pout. Maybe 4 good singles. Saw their last gig at Brixton Academy (free tickets... honest), they had a real sense of 'we know our career is dying a slow death' about them.

Bet Louise Wener is a MNer. I'll ask her next time I see her in Budgens.

badgermonkey · 05/08/2008 14:42

I like all the bands mentioned here! That was a pretty good time for music, but I like the newish crop that are arouns now with a similar sort of a sound; Kaisers, Fratellis, the Kooks, etc. Going to see Scouting for Girls in November, my current faves.

But none of them will ever live up to Blur, sigh.

badgermonkey · 05/08/2008 14:45

One of my all-time favourite songs is this. The line near the end - "I went with her 'cause she looks like you" - is just a killer.

DaDaDa · 05/08/2008 14:46

Yes. Better than anything Suede ever released.

All the new guitar bands sound like The Housemartins crossed with George Formby to me. But I know that it's just that I'm getting past it and need different music now. Have I mentioned Fleet Foxes on this thread yet?

frankiesbestfriend · 05/08/2008 14:50

Yeah I agree some decent bands around again after a bit of a drought, love The Enemy and the Cribs, Pigeon Detectives and Kaisers are OK.

It's just not the same when you have a mortgage and kids though. Very different dancing around kitchen whilst emptying dishwasher than staying up all night dancing and drinking G+T.

sfxmum · 05/08/2008 14:53

I thought Foals were pretty good recently only them along Ida Maria and the Irrepressibles made me listen to more than one song when I had not previously heard their stuff

DaDaDa · 05/08/2008 15:02

I like Mystery Jets. May just be becuase they sound a bit like Orange Juice and the Bunnymen mixed together.

Bronze · 05/08/2008 16:58

sfxmum - my ds2 loves dancing round the kitchen to yes with me. We had that and suede on yesterday.

taliac · 05/08/2008 19:14

Oh how I loved Pulp.

Much more than any of the others.

Dadada - would that be the Crouch End Budgens??

Oh yes I went to see Dodgy at Brixton academy. It was freezing and we missed the last bus. It was a fun gig though (those were the days of gigs and nights out)

Pulp were my favourites too, taliac. I went to see them several times and once was around the time that Jarvis was done on Stars in their Eyes. Do you remember that they got the guy who impersonated him to go on tour with them and come out at the start of the gig and pretend to be Jarvis?

I also saw Ocean Colour Scene who were AWFUL and The Bluetones who I had a soft spot for they seemed so sappy.

DaDaDa · 06/08/2008 09:34

The worst Britpop band.

Sorry for inflicting that on you.

badgermonkey · 06/08/2008 09:50

Toploader, ugh. My DH inexplicably loves them; grounds for divorce?

This thread is making me trawl Youtube for some forgotten classics: Longpigs, anyone?

DaDaDa · 06/08/2008 10:07

Richard Hawley looking moody in the grey shirt and shades, trivia fans.

DaDaDa · 06/08/2008 10:17

Underrated, but should probably pack it in now.

Love this song.

schneebly · 06/08/2008 10:21

omg loving this thread! takes me back...

better longpigs song here

schneebly · 06/08/2008 10:22

what about this this!

sfxmum · 06/08/2008 10:24

weirdly last night mtv2 were playing 'lost classics' which included Bluetones, House of love, stone temple pilots, belly and blind melon

sfxmum · 06/08/2008 10:27

bronze dd favours 'what's the excuse' which she calls you said you would and sings 'brother sister brother sister'

frankiesbestfriend · 06/08/2008 10:47

How much am I enjoying this thread?
