What's the saddest music video ever ?

I've always thought the song Happier by Marshmallo and Bastille was quite upbeat and fun when hearing it on the radio. The other day when watching music videos on YouTube it came up. So heartbreaking. A lonely isolated girl is given a puppy by her dad. The girl and the dog become close. Gradually the dog ages and becomes sick until it is put down. The most upsetting thing in the video is the girl sobbing at the vets while the dog puts the paw in her hand to cheer her up.
Thankfully the video has a happy ending, which I won't spoil. But check it out.
What music videos do you find sad?

Everytime by Britney Spears especially knowing know what the song was about and how much heartbreak she has gone through in what looked like such a perfect enviable life at the time

Isn't it Fields of Gold, a cover of a Sting song?

Yep

I agree with Hurt, and also Everybody Hurts by REM, and Days Of Our Lives when Freddy looks so frail and brave.

I was coming on to say 'Happier' when I saw the thread. DD came downstairs I absolute bits when DDog was about 1 saying she didn't want her to die 😞

Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’.

God yes. My DH and I always say this when we watch this video. The whole thing just tugs at the old heart strings a bit. But it was a real common experience for gay men back then which I think just makes it worse.

The girl that never was - James Blunt.
Choked me up.

Don't think this is "saddest ever" but Everytime by Britney Spears is very sad, including that it foreshadowed the escalating troubles in her life - hounding by paparazzi, treated badly by partners, mental health and drug issues, hospitalisation.

I was going to say this one too. Especially after she wrote about her termination

corlan · 10/05/2026 16:45

I was also going to say Hurt by Johnny Cash . Cried the first time I saw the video - heartbreaking.

Actnaturally · 10/05/2026 16:47

When I read your thread title, @Floogal , I immediately thought of Happier. I can’t listen without crying.

These are the days of our lives, Queen. Freddie Mercury was dying and it's just so very sad.

Came on to say this - so sad as he’s visibly fading 😢

The song isn’t about her mum’s death, it’s a Prince song. I think she was thinking of her mum when she shot the video, though.

Yes I believe her Mum had died very recently. Her cruel and abusive Mum but I can't imagine the mixed feelings she must have had.

Scarlettjune · 10/05/2026 16:57

Poor Sinead O Connor - a very damaged woman

boobot1 · 10/05/2026 16:58

James Blunt the girl that never was. A lot of James Blunt actually
