Didn't write her own stuff afaik which seems to be the sine qua non of this thread but Dionne Warwick is a great fave of mine.

cyteen · 11/06/2008 14:49

Someone else who has largely not written her own stuff but who still deserves massive respect for her musicianship: Emmylou Harris.

Raahh · 11/06/2008 14:56

ooh. Liz Fraser is sublime- try looking up "song for the siren' (with This Mortal Coil), for a truly inspired cover...(would link, but rubbish at them!)

Vulgar · 11/06/2008 15:08

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/06/2008 16:33

As all my rock women have been rightly mentioned (PJ, Kim D and Kim G!) I have gone back to my folky roots for my absolute favourite singer Shirley Collins she has a beautiful unique voice.

terrapin · 11/06/2008 16:36

Debbie Harry
Patti Smith
Siouxsie
women in bands such as The Vaselines and Slits who opened the doors for so many women in bands
