My favourite local taxi driver is an ex-squaddie and has scary looking tattoos all over him - but is the most passionate Ella Fitzgerald fan you could imagine. We drove back from Sainsburys yesterday listening to "Bewitched..." together .

I'd forgotten about the Traceys - Thorn and Chapman. May have to go to that ITunes store again.

Are we talking women we admire, or purely musical talent? A lot of these women are/were out of their noggins on various substances and deeply miserable.

But I do think Bjork, Tracey Thorn and Joni Mitchell are brilliant and admirable. Jill Scott too.

WenchConnection · 11/06/2008 11:55

Joanna Newsom, anyone? quirky and definitely not to everyone's taste...

totalmisfit · 11/06/2008 13:12

i tried to get into Joanna Newsom, and i have no doubt she's very talented, but i just didn't 'click' with her music...

agree with Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and i was blown away when i heard some of Tracy Thorn's early stuff a few years ago, very folky, melodic and different from what i'd expected.

UD - i was a huge Kenickie fan in my teens, and still have a soft spot for Lauren Laverne - P-U-N-K-A!
