Folk music- please can you recommend?

Loving close harmony, ideally acapella, traditional folk songs at the moment.

I discovered Coope, Boyes and Simpson first (prefer their trad stuff to their own writing) and also the Young Uns (again mainly prefer their reworkings of trad songs). Getting on nicely with the Copper family, and the Longest Johns when they aren't being too silly. Can listen to a bit of Fisherman's Friends, not so keen on the more recent stuff.

I'm finding the sound quality and recording style of the 70s folk revival bands e.g. Steeleye Span, fairport convention, a bit jarring.

Please can you recommend anyone similar?

Lady Maisery (and anything Hannah James does), old stuff by Kerfuffle. You might like Show of Hands, maybe the Unthanks.

Windborne
The Wilsons
The Witches of Elswick

The Good Lovelies might interest you, folksy/country with amazing harmonies.

For trad music I listen mainly to Scottish/Gaelic music. Might be your cup of tea or not, but Skippinish, Mànran, Tide Lines, Skerryvore, possibly Peat & Diesel are all worth a listen.

Tall Heights do beautiful harmonies

mitogoshi · 15/02/2024 20:03

The young 'uns are amazing. I've seen them live multiple times, highly recommend

froomeonthebroom · 15/02/2024 20:04

Not sure if it's exactly what you're after but the album Utopia and Wasteland by Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar is beautiful.

Marmiteymuffin · 15/02/2024 20:05

I'm not sure if it is similar to what you describe. But when you said close harmony it made me think of songbird by the moulettes. Such a pretty song..

mitogoshi · 15/02/2024 20:06

Other favourite s of mine are Skerryvore, Tide Lines, (both Scottish), Banter, Tallisk and seeing Bryony Griffith & Alice Jibes tomorrow who are such fun

mitogoshi · 15/02/2024 20:06

jones not jibes!

Kathryn Williams
Karine Polwart
The Burns Unit
The Be Good Tanyas

Marmiteymuffin · 15/02/2024 20:07

I also thought of the unthanks. And again not quite what you describe, but my latest folk discovery (bit late to them) are Stornoway. I just love some of their tunes.

Thank you all for such a lot of suggestions! I didn't make my OP super long so I have explored some of these.

I do like Lady Maisery although a whole album can be a bit samey. Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar do some great stuff. The Unthanks have some great tunes but not quite the big harmonies I'm after.

Off to Spotify!

The Teacups
The Vocal Squad
Cockersdale
The Wilsons (they have a new album out)

Not a capella but Nancy Kerr and James Fagan/ Melrose Quartet

Rustygirl · 15/02/2024 20:18

The unthanks are great. Maybe not trad enough for you though

Rustygirl · 15/02/2024 20:20

Offa Rex and Olivia Chaney too

DuneFan · 15/02/2024 20:21

@elsiemarleysellsthebarley can you recommend an album title? I've had them recommended before and (I am assuming due to the extreme un-folkness of what arrived) bought the wrong Wilsons.

I do like Nancy Kerr!
