Folk music- please can you recommend?

Loving close harmony, ideally acapella, traditional folk songs at the moment.

I discovered Coope, Boyes and Simpson first (prefer their trad stuff to their own writing) and also the Young Uns (again mainly prefer their reworkings of trad songs). Getting on nicely with the Copper family, and the Longest Johns when they aren't being too silly. Can listen to a bit of Fisherman's Friends, not so keen on the more recent stuff.

I'm finding the sound quality and recording style of the 70s folk revival bands e.g. Steeleye Span, fairport convention, a bit jarring.

Please can you recommend anyone similar?

@elsiemarleysellsthebarley can you recommend an album title? I've had them recommended before and (I am assuming due to the extreme un-folkness of what arrived) bought the wrong Wilsons.

I do like Nancy Kerr!

‘Sibling Revivalry’ https://thewilsonfamilyalbum.co.uk/sibling_revivalry.aspx

not sure if it’s streaming yet.
(apologies if links/ quotes all over the place)

I totally love Coope Boyes and Simpson! I’d also recommend John Tams

Sibling Revivalry - The Official Wilson Family website

The Wilson Family, regarded by many as the foremost acappella group on the British Folk Scene, sing traditionally oriented songs in unaccompanied harmony, like to have a bit of a laugh and wash it all down with a few odd pints.

Ninebarrow

I love Gwenno, especially her album Tresor.

Alison Krauss doing anything, including her album with Robert Plant

The Countrymen, a cornish folk band

Oooh am loving this thread!

Riverlee · 15/02/2024 21:44

Me too. Currently listening to The Teacups as a result of it (and plan to listen to others).

Sibling revivalry ordered and 35 hours of tracks downloaded . . . Thanks all again, I will update!

You might like some of the stuff from The Spooky Men’s Chorale

Friends of mine - Granny's Attic - these guys have been together since school and they work so hard, constantly gigging - done all the big folk festivals (Cambridge, etc), received high critical praise on R3, R6, etc - George does so much research digging out overlooked traditional folk songs and arranging them - brilliant live - not even my kind of music TBH (more into jangly guitar bands) but they deserve wider success - just hasn't quite happened for them yet. There's plenty of videos going back 10 years on YT - this is their last album. What I like about the music is the range of styles and that they don't neglect the musical passages or instrumentals and just pick ballads.

I second Granny’s Attic. I’ve seen them a couple of times and always surprised they aren’t more well-known.

And the original and best .. The Spinners

Saw them a few times as a youngster.

UnctuousUnicorns · 25/02/2024 22:48

I really enjoyed The Leylines when I saw them as a support act last year, but I don't know if they count as "pure" folk?

LlynTegid · 28/02/2024 20:49

Kate Rusby, Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman, surprised not mentioned before.

Agree about The Unthanks and the Young Uns.

DuneFan · 29/02/2024 06:24

So, update.

BTW I do know the big folk bods like Kate Rusby, Show of Hands, Steeleye Span, Alison Krauss - I'm just specifically looking for a capella harmony stuff right now!

Big hits for me have been, some from this thread and some from YouTube autoplay, Spotify playlist etc . . .

Bryony Griffith & Alice Jones
Broomdasher
The teacups (oh so good!)
Windborne
Jack in a barrel
Melrose quartet
Ninebarrow (some of)
Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll
Copper Family (super niche!)
The Longest John's (when they are not being too silly)

Thank you, and yet more recommendations will be happily received. My playlist atm is amazing.

I'm With Her: brilliant.

Repeat praise for Richard Thompson.
Right now listening to Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams. More Americana, really.

PotOfTulips · 27/05/2024 17:48

What a fab thread,

Windborne - absolutely stunning and have harmony, melody and intimacy as just 4 voices
