....can you recommend me some music?

Ds (9) is really enjoying classical music, loves The Planets, Hertzog The King (I know that's not right),Dance of sugarplum fairy, Ride of the Val.... From the film with Marlon Brando ..

What other pieces could you recommend?Looking to buy a MP3 player and load it up with music

Sibelius Karelia suite (will probably recognise the intermezzo), Vivaldi and anything Beethoven especially slow movement of Emperor. Maybe Pachelbels Canon.

Echobelly · 07/12/2018 22:13

Bach double violin concerto in D minor; Dvorak Symphony no 9 ('The New World'); Saint-Saens organ symphony; Beethoven symphonies generally, but especially 5,7 and 9.

And see if you can take him to some concerts, because seeing it live really is something special. DD (10) loves classical concerts, and DS (7) is starting to enjoy them, especially ones with piano in his case.

minkies11 · 07/12/2018 22:18

Second in the hall of the mountain king (Grieg)! Flight of the Bumblebee if energy levels are high :)

Boyskeepswinging · 07/12/2018 22:22

The BBC have run a project called 10 Pieces for the past few years specifically to spark children's interest in classical music. Have a look at the 10 Pieces clips on YouTube.
Second the idea of going to live concerts. Your DS would enjoy concerts by the National Children's Orchestras as (a) the kids would be just a little older than him so great inspiration (ie it's not freaky to be a kid who loves classical music) and (b) the programmes are always really entertaining and the playing is an excellent standard. The NCO are playing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the South Bank this Sunday if you're around (with the lovely Nicola Benedetti).

MrsAird · 07/12/2018 22:23

Saint Saens 'Danse Macabre'
Prokofiev 'Dance of the Knights' from Romeo & Juliet, also his 'Lieutenant Kije' suite and Troika

fourthusernamebutwhoscounting · 07/12/2018 22:24

Following!

JoyceDivision · 07/12/2018 22:41

Thanks everyone, the ten pieces has sparked the interest but I would love to have loads for him to listen to. Got him tickets for Blue planet live which is fab as it's his favourite program with a live orchestra!

Keep recommendations coming, I promise to use them all!

I'd recommend Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, not only for the beauty and range of the music, but also because you can still trace many of the pictures which gives an extra interest for a young person.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, with its cleverly interwoven themes and dramatic climax (cannons firing!) is hard to resist, and tells the story of the Battle of Borodino with Russia defending itself against the forces of Napoleon.

Dodie66 · 07/12/2018 22:48

Vivaldi four seasons

Julianaa · 07/12/2018 22:48

Peter And The Wolf

Boyskeepswinging · 07/12/2018 22:50

There have been several years of 10 Pieces so plenty to explore there!

MissConductUS · 07/12/2018 22:52

Most anything by Aaron Copland, but particularly Appalachian Spring and Rodeo.

Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, Peter Pan and Wonderful Town.

Debussy 's Le Mer.

I thought I was the only one on MN who liked classical music. 😁

Onceuponatime21 · 07/12/2018 22:54

Put classic fm on in the car. Especially if you have one that tells you the name of the song being played. Is really opening my kids' ears, and helping them discuss what they like / don't like.

Good mix of songs you've heard before, and less well known stuff

INeedNewShoes · 07/12/2018 22:55

www.classicfm.com/classical-100/full-list/

You could try this. It was a list put together to draw kids interest in classical music.

CarpeVitam · 07/12/2018 23:06

Mozart 21st piano concerto No 21, in C major.

Bliss!

Tony2 · 07/12/2018 23:13

As a gloomy kid I liked Mahler 5 Adagietto, Tallis Fantasia, Elgar Cello Concerto, Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra, Lark Ascending, Bruch Violin Concerto No1 (Janine janssen, you'll cry!) Karelia Suite, Elgar Sospiri, as others say Lieutenant Kije, Smetana Ma Vlast Moldau, you feel the river swirl and the polka in the middle, if you don't want to dance you don't want to live! Oh yes Satie Gnossienne No 1, just beautiful.

CarpeVitam · 07/12/2018 23:20

Love this thread already....will be back in the morning!

Vivaldi The Four Seasons...

CarpeVitam · 07/12/2018 23:26

Oops @Dodie66 recommended Vivaldi 4 Seasons already Smile

ScreamingValenta · 07/12/2018 23:30

I loved Satie's Gymnopedies as a child and still do.

Heratnumber7 · 07/12/2018 23:39

The Lark Ascending by Vaughan-Williams. Just about the most sublime price of music you'll ever hear.

And Carmine Burana by Carl Orff.

Handel's Messiah

1812 Overtture

Heratnumber7 · 07/12/2018 23:40

And Rhapsody in Blue

JoyceDivision · 07/12/2018 23:41

This is fab,thankyou!

We had lark ascending at our wedding, as it is v close to she's heart, I absolutely love it and was playing it to D's today... Except I kept drifting off to listen to it, it is such a perfect piece of music.
