....can you recommend me some music?

Ds (9) is really enjoying classical music, loves The Planets, Hertzog The King (I know that's not right),Dance of sugarplum fairy, Ride of the Val.... From the film with Marlon Brando ..

What other pieces could you recommend?Looking to buy a MP3 player and load it up with music

We aren’t buffs but we (DS8) like filmscores; Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones. Also Greig’s hall Mountain King, Nutcracker. Great idea for a prezzy.

The Park Ascending always reminds me of Copland's Quiet City, another really sublime piece.

Quiet City

Great thread. 😇

MissConductUS · 08/12/2018 00:13

Lark not Park

Bloody Kindle autocorrect.

Albinoni Adagio for strings v popular, Samuel Barber Adagio, Arvo Part Spiegel in Spiegel is clever and sweet, if they're ok with singing Bailero from Chants d'Auvergne is nice, tempted to go for Shostakovich Leningrad Symphony, maybe not all, just the relentless build up then explosion bit, bloody brilliant. Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings, like that, again singing, Senza Mamma from Suor Angelica, thank you Morse, heartbreaking. And Maria Callas, Casta Diva, proof there is a God. Ha

ScreamingValenta · 08/12/2018 00:27

If you want something contemporary, Karl Jenkins (the perennial Classic FM fave) - The Armed Man is fabulous!

MissConductUS · 08/12/2018 00:31

I love Samuel Barbers work too. He and Copland were contemporaries and both lived in the same area that I love in now.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 08/12/2018 00:39

Soundtracks are fabulous. Pirates of the Caribbean is my favourite and always has been.

Blue planet live sounds incredible - he’s a lucky boy!

I’d recommend Elgar’s land of hope and glory, Elgar’s nimrod (bit slow but spine tingling!), Mozart’s clarinet concerto, Beethoven’s moonlight sonata and anything at all from Ludovico einaudi (who tours and is wonderful!) his earlier stuff is probably the best eg I giorni

Tony2 · 08/12/2018 00:49

Someone must have mentioned Dvorak New World Symphony, so uplifting. J S Bach being very very clever wrote a piece that could be played from either end I think, forget name, maybe worth a google.

Tintini · 08/12/2018 10:25

I'm currently obsessed with Hubert Law's version of Bach's Brandenburg concerto number 3 from his album the Rite of Spring.

Instead of strings it's flutes and guitar and drums and bassoon I think. For some reason I much prefer this to more traditional versions.

JoyceDivision · 08/12/2018 11:35

Wow, lots of good suggestions, I promise to put them all on!

Zadoc the Priest! That's what he likes!

Thanks again, appreciate all the suggestions Smile

Mine loved Mozart's Requiem at that age.

My DD is 5 and absolutely loves classical music, she has a significant learning disability so it can be a bit tricky to find things she likes but classical music is definitely one of her favourites.

I got a box set of Classic FM cds from a charity shop (was called A-Z I think and it has a book) put the whole lot on her iPod and it keeps her happy for hours on end - best £6 I have ever spent. She also likes her Baroque for Babies cd - as I know so little about this stuff I get assorted things to work out what she likes.

She also loved going to see the local Symphony Orchestra, who were so welcoming, and The Bridgewater Hall have quite a few kids things too. It’s brillant hearing it live, even if I had no idea whatsoever was going on (just don’t clap till everyone else does!)

CardinalSin · 08/12/2018 13:31

That ClassicFM list of 100 pieces is a good place to start (although don't just listen to one single movement like they suggest, listen to the whole piece), and then come back when you've worked out what she particularly likes, and we can suggest where to go from there.

Just as a personal recommendation, I'd throw in Khachaturian's ballet Gayaheh - the complete ballet music. It has plenty of variety, but also lots of really exciting and thrilling stuff going on.

I don't know where you live, but near us this time of the year there are more events for families, not sure how to describe them, but like www.cadoganhall.com/whats-on/?categories%5B0%5D=12.

DS (9) loves Bach's piano music from Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. These are lovely little pieces that Bach's wife collected for their children to learn to play the keyboard, perfect for children.

DS also loves Albinoni's Adagio and this orchestral suite with flute solo by Bach. Vivaldi's 4 Seasons has also been a long-term favorite.
