I thought we could have a thread to chat about playing! I play the piano (not as badly as I fear but not as well as I hope) and have recently tried my hand at chamber music. Would love to hear what other people are doing.

CoteDAzur Here's a picture of the instruments they used in Rameau's Dardanus.

Aw,thank you Smile I love being amongst musical folk

Cagliostro · 16/04/2017 21:23

Played some chopin waltzes today :) made me happy

Cagliostro · 16/04/2017 21:24

Oh and I've decided I'm going to get the Fantastic Beasts piano solo book at some point soon :o

CoteDAzur · 16/04/2017 21:27

Will someone else also share their music videos? I can't be the only one who doesn't give a hoot about middle aged sausage fingers playing semi-OK stuff Grin

MrSlant · 16/04/2017 22:13

Cote as soon as I have 'Clowns' to perfection I will share it I promise (you can gasp in amazement that anyone with such spade like hands even attempts the piano). I'm in such a funny space, gone from having my exam pieces perfect to having to learn new stuff that I don't have both hands anywhere near making friends yet. It's so frustrating!

Cagliostro the Fantastic Beasts book sounds amazing. How hard is it? We love the film (just watched if for the millionth time). Which Chopin waltzes did you play?

NeverEverAnythingEver · 16/04/2017 22:14

I have shared something. But I deleted it, petrified that other people might see it. Grin

May try again when I have something half decent to show.

Cool, I'm looking forward to that, Mr Slant Smile

CoteDAzur · 16/04/2017 22:15

Is that the one I saw, Never?

NeverEverAnythingEver · 16/04/2017 22:39

That's the one cote. Grin

I've given in and have printed out the Gavotte & 6 doubles. I've also printed out the ornament table. I found this page on Bach's ornaments and I'm going to cross reference. I may be taking this all too seriously, but I'll see my teacher next week and will hopefully discuss from a position of a little knowledge.

Yay, Topnotes!!! Trombonist aged 44 here. Also playing in wind bands.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/04/2017 18:17

👏👏👏👏👏very happy for Swiss and Topnotes, that they have found each other that is Grin.

jennielou75 · 17/04/2017 18:39

Clarinet and saxophone as a child and I am now learning the ukulele in a group at my school. It's a bit harder as an adult!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 17/04/2017 19:15

Hurrah for trombonists!

MrSlant I love how Clowns switches mode so quickly. Ties your fingers in knots if you are not careful. Grin

I'm utterly in love with it Never! I'm about 75% there with it now, was just about to say might go in for summer exam instead of Autumn but depending on the scheduling that could be June which isn't long enough. Will be a good girl and buy some technique work books so I learn properly instead.

Is the ukulele fun jennie? I have been trying guitar but my hands seem to be so small and square it's not working very well with chords, ukulele could be the answer.

BarchesterFlowers · 17/04/2017 21:44

I have toyed with DD's guitar MrSlant. ¾ sized classical guitar and I struggle with the stretch on some chords.

Topnotes · 17/04/2017 22:13

Swiss Christmas
Yay! Yay! Big glissando to seventh and back Grin

CoteDAzur · 17/04/2017 22:29

Yay, Never! Now we will both be working on the Gavotte & 6 Doubles although I won't even attempt the 6th one Smile

So far I'm finding the 1st double difficult and 2nd one a real pleasure to play...

SwissChristmasMuseum · 17/04/2017 23:23

Topnotes, indeed 😃 and a big growl with a plunger! What are you playing at the mo?

NeverEverAnythingEver · 18/04/2017 08:33

OK - one of the children has gone to school! Peace and quiet!

Now I'm going to figure out which scores to return to the library and which ones to keep. Our local library has quite a good collection of sheet music, and I've borrowed ALL the piano+strings scores that don't scare me.

cote I won't go as far as "working on it" but I might just make a start today. Smile The edition I printed seems to have updated the notation - no squiggles, jut the conventional stuff. But even so, people don't play them the same. I listened again to the two recordings you put up and both of them stick pretty much to the written music when they play the first time but take some liberty in the repeats. It seems to make sense though. I often wonder about repeats ...

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2017 08:48

I remember when ornaments just looked like squiggles to me and I couldn't understand why it was so important that they each be played exactly as intended Grin That was just a year ago.

Now I clutch my pearls when I hear them omitted or changed. This happens a lot when Baroque music is played on the piano, as it's just not as easy to play ornaments on the piano as on the harpsichord. Except if you are NK, obviously Envy

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2017 08:49

No school this week here, btw. I haven't been able to touch the piano in the past 24 hours Sad DD just started watching Star Wars in the living room, so no piano for me in the next could of hours before we have to leave, either. Argh!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 18/04/2017 08:55

I haven't touch the piano in the past couple of weeks ...

I don't know how I got obsessed like this Blush

CoteDAzur · 18/04/2017 11:58

Also, I just noticed that I made a mistake in my previous post about Gavotte & 6 Ds. I find difficult the last line of the Gavotte itself (because of all those ornaments!) and really enjoy the 1st Double Smile
