I thought I would start a post about favourite albums because I am a bit of a music obsessive. These are ten of my favourite albums, although I have many favourites:

  1. Suede 'Dog Man Star'
  2. David Bowie 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'
  3. Sex Pistols 'Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols'
  4. Pulp 'Different Class'
  5. Oasis 'Definitely Maybe'
  6. The Smiths 'Hatful of Hollow'
  7. Elvis Costello 'Armed Forces'
  8. Pixies 'Surfer Rosa'
  9. The Beatles 'Revolver'
10. Dexys Midnight Runners 'Searching for the Young Soul Rebels'

"Trance is by far my favourite genre of the past 20 years but it's hard to single out albums."

Possibly one of the best.

readyforno2 · 03/12/2015 22:45

Love these threads! Makes Apple Music all the more worth it!! Definitely not place marking

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 01:03

I'm glad you like it, readyforno2!! I'm now pretty sure it is impossible to choose just ten albums though because every time I listen to something, I think, 'that should have really been on the list!' My boyfriend and I have just booked a trip to Liverpool for The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour in the New Year so having a bit of a Beatles/Beatles solo-fest. This is our current listening and I could have easily put either 'Imagine' or 'John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band' on the list. 'Revolver' is on there though, thank goodness! Xmas Grin

I also heard Paul Weller 'Stanley Road' for the first time in ages this morning so need some Weller on here too!!!

And to any Beatles fans out there, also remember that the 8th December is the 35th anniversary of John's death.

Cocolepew wins hands down.

I feel sad when I see these Best Album threads because most people invariably go on to list a bunch of white men playing guitars.

My list:

Prince - Controversy
Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
Blondie - Parallel Lines
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
The Beatles - Revolver
The Kinks - VGPS
Girls Aloud - Chemistry
Depeche Mode - Speak and Spell
The Human League - Dare
Various Artists - Studio One Soul

YokoUhOh · 04/12/2015 02:47

On a Back For Good tip, I heard a rumour that it was written by Barry Gibb, not Gary Barlow. Listen to it again and see if you agree!

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 03:32

Love the list YokoUhOh, especially The Kinks choice!!! Xmas Smile

Oh yes, I've heard that rumour too. Barry Gibb denied it and said he had never heard it but it really does sound like it could have been written by The Bee Gees. It does also sound quite different to the other Take That material at that time too and they covered How Deep Is Your Love not long afterwards, so maybe it is true! The song structure is actually very Bee Gees too, I think.

However, I also remember that George Michael said publicly at the time that he thought it sounded like it had been written by an American songwriter so that is another rumour entirely I guess Xmas Hmm I always thought Back For Good had hints of this song about it, which was written by Jerry Chesnut, who wrote songs for Elvis, Faron Young, etc ...

future I definitely think the Gibb/famous songwriter thesis has legs! It's just in a different league to their other songs.

The giveaway is the word 'twist', which is out of Barlow's range (therefore unlikely to have been his work) and also a sign that a classic songwriter has penned it (word painting).

YokoUhOh · 04/12/2015 03:41

Future and other TFC fans: I met Norman Blake a few years ago when DH DJed with him. A nicer man you couldn't hope to meet, and top tunes, too. I was drunk and made an arse of myself, obviously.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 03:59

Yes, totally agreed about the 'twist' part of the song! The words, phrasing and everything in that song are completely different to any other Gary Barlow composition (if it is a Gary Barlow composition) and are very advanced compared to 'Sure', which was the previous single. It definitely has legs!

Aaw, Norman!!! Xmas Grin That is so cool, love it! Xmas Grin I bet he was lovely, Teenage Fanclub always seem like really nice people just from their interviews (and songs too) Xmas Smile

This is my favourite Teenage Fanclub song. 'Grand Prix' is a great album! Xmas Smile

What's the story morning glory - Oasis

The only album I still listen to EVERY day without fail and never tire of it.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 04:13

Such a great album ReturnofSaturn!! Xmas Smile I heard this for the first time a few weeks ago ... if you haven't already heard it, it is really good ...

Love Sparky's Dream!

Oasis are the SCOURGE of guitar bands and WTSMG is a PLAGUE on the past 20 years. I can tell you where every one of those songs is lifted from. Needless to say, Noel Gallagher's record collection features only a certain type of record.

(Saturn can you tell I hate Oasis?)

YokoUhOh · 04/12/2015 04:20

Champagne Supernova is this:

She's Electric is this:

I could go on... (But you'll all kill me so I wont!)

ReturnofSaturn · 04/12/2015 04:24

Hehe I love Oasis. I love their attitude and the brothers egos. Love the hilarious stuff Noel has spewed out in interviews. Love it all Grin

YokoUhOh · 04/12/2015 04:31

I did love Def Maybe as a teenager and hats off to Noel et al for following their dream and becoming one of the biggest bands in history - that takes perseverance and determination.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 04:31

Haha, YokoUhOh, I could probably do the same but at least Noel is honest about it, which is quite refreshing Xmas Grin He even says about it on the Desert Island Discs link Xmas Grin The classic lifting wholesale from 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing' is my personal favourite and 'Step Out' was left off (What's the Story) Morning Glory? because Stevie Wonder requested 10% of the royalties due to it sounding like 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)'.

I do love Oasis though, I'm afraid!

Anyway, it is (a very late) bedtime for me so I will leave you with some more Beatles, because today has been a bit of a Beatles day. Night night and thanks for making this thread really good everybody! Xmas Smile

OP posts:
ReturnofSaturn · 04/12/2015 04:31

I'm not sure about the songs being directly 'lifted' even if they had why am I supposed to care, I still love their albums to listen to and the whole Oasis thing :)
Noel has spokrn many times of the bands they loved and influenced them, such as the Beatles. I think it's only natural for there to be similarities to stuff you had listened to all your life

DoctorTwo · 04/12/2015 07:50

In no particular order:-

Hefner - The Fidelity Wars.
Faith No More - Angel Dust.
Grindcrusher - An Earache Sampler.
Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants.
Bad Brains - Quickness.
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters.
Half Man Half Biscuit - Back In The DHSS.
Fatima Mansions - Viva Dead Ponies.
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm.
The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free.

If I was only allowed to listen to one of them it would be Angel Dust. Mike Patten's voice is the 8th wonder of the world.

thefutureofpolitics · 04/12/2015 15:49

Another great list DoctorTwo!! And thank you so much for mentioning Hefner, I haven't heard them for ages and 'The Fidelity Wars' is such a great album! They also did some fantastic John Peel sessions ...

And definitely agreed about Mike Patten's voice! Xmas Grin

Today's listening has been Wings 'Band On the Run' ...

... and Paul McCartney's 'Ram' ...

... so I will have to give these great albums a mention! Xmas Grin And also, a vote for one of the greatest album covers ever! My Mum and Dad have 'Band On the Run' on vinyl and it looks so good! Xmas Smile

We are going to Tenerife on Sunday so if I don't catch you before, Happy Christmas and Happy New Year everybody! Xmas Smile

Love both of those. Macca is wrongly despised on MN: he's a genius.
