Classical music that makes you cry

CallOfTheRiled · 10/07/2014 21:07

Sometimes I hear classical music on the radio that is so beautiful it makes me want to cry (in a good/ therapeutic way!) The problem is, I can never remember them later. I know Adagio for Barber, Strings, and Bruch Violin Concerto, but would love some others. Thanks

Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending. And parts of his 5th Symphony.

TheFarSide · 10/07/2014 22:15

Yes to The Lark Ascending, a very uplifting piece of music.

And yes to Mahler, especially Symphony No 5:-

itsazoohere · 10/07/2014 22:18

Very happy for you then, Purple!

TheFarSide · 10/07/2014 22:29

Enjoyed that ballet scene from R&J Cruickshank.

How about Swan Lake with Adam Cooper ...

stillenacht1 · 10/07/2014 22:30

TheFarSide · 10/07/2014 22:36

from Brassed Off. Just as my eyes dry the piece finishes and Pete Postlethwaite's character says "and she calls that wobbly" and off I go again.
IHeartKingThistle · 11/07/2014 14:54

Ooh if we're going modern Tavener's The Protecting Veil is lovely.

kelda · 11/07/2014 14:55

Love that scene in Brassed Off.

I do miss playing in an orchestra. I've played several of those mentioned. The Gorecki especially was very moving Nerf

Minion · 11/07/2014 15:19

Not sure if it counts, actually I'm pretty sure it doesn't but I well up everytime Andrea Bocelli sings con te partiro.

kelda · 11/07/2014 15:20

I miss playing in an orchestra too, although I was pretty rubbish.

CallOfTheRiled · 11/07/2014 15:32

Thank you for these. I have had the day off and have listened to them through the day. It's made me a bit meloncony! I wasn't brought up listening to classical music and thought it was all a bit 'high brow' for the likes of me, but I love what I've heard today.

The 'Mad scene' From LuciaDa Lamamoor
The St Patrick's Breastplate
The Farside again, I second Strauss' Four Last Songs...used in 'The Trip to Italy' Not that I watch much telly!

CallOfTheRiled · 11/07/2014 16:00

Bruch's Kol Nidrei.

Another by Jacqueline du Pré.

AdamLambsbreath · 11/07/2014 16:09

Thomas Tallis' 'Spem In Alium'.

Welling up a bit just playing it off YouTube over crap computer speakers!

PS I see from the YouTube listing it's been used in '50 Shades of Grey'. Hmm I would like to say that this had nothing to do with my selection Smile

Thumbwitch · 11/07/2014 16:09
- modern and very simple but I love it.

Yes to Lark Ascending, Barber's Adagio for Strings and several others already mentioned.

Thumbwitch · 11/07/2014 16:12

Oh and definitely In paradisum and the Hebrew Slave chorus.
THere's another one too but I'm having trouble remembering what it's called...

Lilymaid · 11/07/2014 16:19

The very end of Mahler 2 and Mahler 8 - especially if you have sung them!

Minion · 11/07/2014 18:24

Oh and dance macabre (johnathon creek theme tune)

fairnotfair · 11/07/2014 18:30

Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody. Preferably played by Lang Lang.

TeaandHobnobs · 11/07/2014 18:52

The piece that makes me cry is the In Paradisum from Duruflé's Requiem - the bit from chorus angelorum... To me it really seemed like a representation of heaven (I listened to it a lot after my granddad died)
Martin Mass for double choir has a similar effect. I like Pärt too.
