Classical music that makes you cry

CallOfTheRiled · 10/07/2014 21:07

Sometimes I hear classical music on the radio that is so beautiful it makes me want to cry (in a good/ therapeutic way!) The problem is, I can never remember them later. I know Adagio for Barber, Strings, and Bruch Violin Concerto, but would love some others. Thanks

Elgar's Nimrod

TheFarSide · 10/07/2014 21:18

This is a nice version:-

Cruikshank · 10/07/2014 21:26

Can't go wrong with a bit of Strauss's Four Last Songs - beautiful soaring orchestration, full of extensions and chromaticisms that are just so scrunchy your ears practically curl while listening to them:

Cruikshank · 10/07/2014 21:29

Agree about Nimrod btw - love that tune. When I was a young and dickish teenager I tried to convince myself that I liked one of the other variations better, just so that I could go against the grain and prove how superior my ear was, but actually of course it really is the best one.

ataposaurus · 10/07/2014 21:29

Elgar's Cello Concerto.

Cruikshank · 10/07/2014 21:30

(That's just one song on my link btw - haven't uploaded them all - it's the most famous - and deservedly so.)

Jubelteen · 10/07/2014 21:33

Yes Nimrod for me too.
Also the chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.
Not classical but the theme to 'White Horses'.

"The Banks of Green Willow" by George Butterworth. Another loss to WW1, lost far too young Sad

CallOfTheRiled · 10/07/2014 21:40

Thank you! I'm bookmarking them on YouTube to listen to in peace.

Sorry, another agreeing to Elgar's cello concerto Smile

Cruikshank · 10/07/2014 21:50

ALL of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. I am srsly. Just get the complete ballet. It is absolutely gorgeous. Here is the ending, which I defy you to watch without crying (ok, ok, I know you said music, but it's ballet music, so you might as well watch the dancing as well);
