Welcome to the Mumsnet Musical Theatre thread.

Pull up a sequinned pouffe, get cosy with a porn star martini, kick off those character shoes, take off the wig and let out your inner Bernadette Peters.

This is a thread for lovers of musical theatre, whether watching or participating in it. Anything Goes here so to speak...

I'll kick off by saying that in the last week I saw The Book of Mormon and sob, Merrily We Roll Along. Both excellent in completely different ways.

Anyone else? Smile

Ooh you saw Pippin!

I did contemplate having this moved but to what section?

I wondered about Music or 'Look at this?' which was a bit tongue in cheek

KatyMac · 23/06/2013 11:10

Or maybe Culture Vultures?

KatyMac · 23/06/2013 11:11

Maybe we should have a Musical Theatre Topic or a Performing Arts one might be a bit of a niche market tho

RowanMumsnet · 23/06/2013 11:33

Hi there

We've moved this to 'Music' now.

Picturesinthefirelight · 23/06/2013 12:07

A performing arts topic would be good.

I always think when I post in extra curricular activities at what point it stops being EXTRA curricular and becomes the main focus.

yorkshirebound · 25/06/2013 23:07

May I join you? Just got home from seeing Book of Mormon which was hilarious. It's not merrily we roll along but it is huge fun. Anyone else seen it?

SorrelForbes · 25/06/2013 23:29

Not yet but thinking of taking DH and the DSC.

KatyMac · 26/06/2013 08:18

We're saving up to see Lion King.....

SorrelForbes · 26/06/2013 08:47

Katy, I'm not ignoring your pm but have only just got back from NY. I'm going to try and read it properly later today!

KatyMac · 26/06/2013 09:46

Poor you! you must be exhausted

Don't worry

ofcoursethisisanamechange · 26/06/2013 11:36

yes Yorkshire- is a very funny show isn't it? have yet to hear from anyone who hasn't liked it.

yorkshirebound · 26/06/2013 18:55

It was hilarious, if a bit close to the edge at times, the line about raping babies was, um, challenging. I did wonder if I'd done the right thing going with my mum but she loved it too. I am a sondheim fan at heart and of course it doesn't have the same kind of wit nor the same intrigue in the music, but it was thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking.

cardibach · 26/06/2013 19:05

I've seen it - my face actually hurt from laughing by the end. I like that it is funny and irreverent and rude as hell, but it is still a proper musical with good songs and a story arc that makes sense.

SorrelForbes · 02/07/2013 22:58

I am now obsesses with Pippin! Is there anyone in the US that could download and send me this video as it's not available over here?

showtunesgirl · 02/07/2013 23:22

Sorry folks. I've been busy learning lines. What's going on here?

OP posts:
SorrelForbes · 03/07/2013 08:32

Well, I'm currently helping out with a children's group show and listening to the Pippin soundtrack on loop

For which show are you learning lines?

showtunesgirl · 03/07/2013 15:29

It's for an internal corporate video for a well known soft drink company.

I'm MNetting whilst at rehearsal. Grin

After a complete cock up on my behalf and managing to book tickets for the wrong date and a massive push on my behalf to get Customers Services to see sense, I have managed to get last night tickets for Merrily We Roll Along. Grin

Yey! Enjoy

thaliablogs · 07/07/2013 16:21

Showtunesgirl: we saw it before it transferred. Absolutely awesome!

Sorrelforbes: brilliant name! One of my favourite characters. My favourite bit is where she hears the critics discussing her cousin's performance and saying her acting is better for the part.

SorrelForbes · 07/07/2013 20:12

thaliablogs That's one of my favourite parts too! I played Aerial some time ago and I like to think that I channelled a bit of Sorrell!

My other favourite NS character is Winifred from Ballet Shoes.

Watching Mamma Mia on ITV - DD has fallen asleep, even tho it's a favourite musical (she has been at a Festival doing dance workshops all weekend) & as she went to bed, she said she's love to be in the show

Earlier in the week we watched The King & I and she whispered to me during Uncle Tom's Cabin "Are they allowed to DO that" & was horribly embarrassed

showtunesgirl · 08/07/2013 11:39

I used to do group singing lessons with original Sophie from Mamma Mia. She was a sweet girl, didn't know many people in London so our singing teacher Mary Hammond took her in for a bit.

And Run, Eliza, Run! Run from Simon! Grin

SorrelForbes · 08/07/2013 12:16

Mary Hammond is your singing teacher? Envy Grin. Lucky thing.
