Viva, I got an app on my kindle that shows you each chord and then you press a button and it plays the chord so you can compare. Very handy.
I've been making like a bridge shape with my fingers and pressing with the very tips (which are now permanently tingly, where are these callouses I've been promised??) which is how I've been avoiding pressing multiple strings. No idea if this is right btw.
I've also had to cut my nails.

Any tips for good apps for tuning ukes? Free for preference.... DH says I should try a free app before ordering a clip-on tuner but I want one NOW

Herenna, i used an apple app on my ipad called ukulele tuner. But when my clip on tuner arrived my ukulele was out of tune. I think I'm too tone deaf to be ale to do it.

I got my tuner from amazon, it was cheaper than the online music stores.

My uke arrived on Saturday and I've been practising. I know 5 chords, although I can't seem to make them sound like anything decent when put together. Partly because changing between chords requires effort and concentration and partly because I don't know how I'm meant to be strumming!

Oh, and my left hand fingertips are now totally numb!

I learnt This Ole House last night. Rather fun, and if you do the Rosemary Clooney version it avoids the horrible e chord too!
Looked at Songs of Love but that's WAY complicated. It will have go on the back burner for a while.

hello, was talking to a girl in work who was telling me about playing the uke and i was desperate to learn, then i find this thread!! can i join in, have ordered my uke, cant wait to have a go but i am completely un-musical so could be a disaster :)

I went to a beginner's uke group on Monday (it's in Reading, google 'Reading ukulele group') and it was FAB. I was playing along to songs and everything!! They've shown me how to strum, given tips on technique and chord cheats, plus they are very friendly. One woman let me use her clip-on tuner to tune my uke, which is why I came home overwhelmed by the technology

And I am already getting callused fingers! Hurrah

I've found a pretty good free app whilst I drum my fingers impatiently and wait for Amazon - it's called DaTuner Lite. It detects the sound your uke is making and lights up green when you've got the note right. My uke suddenly sounds much better!

Viva - I only found my local one recently - they have a tendency to hide!! Have you considered a Skype lesson or two??

Just discovered this thread and not read all yet, or the previous one, but I am married to a uke-aholic who suffers from Ukelele acquisition syndrome. However I suspect he might say that one vital purchase if you are serious about your uke, and the possibility of performing, is a handmade wooden kazoo made to your specific requirements, from Dr Kazoo. He even sends you daily video updates as he makes your kazoo!

Hey ukers just thought I'd bump this thread up again.

I've got my uke (lavender coloured, with dolphin bridge) and been going to classes with //www.learntouke.co.uk I am pretty rubbish at it but I LOVE it!

Totally recommend the classes to get you started.

right i got a guitar years ago well for dd and just couldn't get it so was thinking about a UKe - is it just has hard as a guitar please do tell and do you have a UKe banjo or one like a little guitar?

no you I tried guitar a couple of times and just could not do it. I'm getting on much better with the ukulele but I wouldn't say it was easy! Regular practice is the way to go, even 10minutes a day has helped.
