Blue badge without claiming PIP

Has anyone successfully applied for a blue badge without claiming PIP?
I've had rheumatoid arthritis for over 20 years and it's been fairly well managed until a couple of years ago. I'm now really struggling to walk far without a lot of pain -I do use a stick supplied by the hospital..
I've seen my consultant this morning and he suggested I apply but I don't claim PIP - I don't yet have any extra costs due to my illness and drive my own car.
I know you don't have to claim PIp to apply but wondered if anyone has been awarded a badge without? - my consultant is happy to supply medical records if required

Yes

Swissmeringue · 11/08/2026 15:19

Yep, I did the application for my mum. She's never claimed PIP but has really bad sciatica and on her worst day struggles to walk 20 metres unaided. Application was successful.

Morethanadecade · 11/08/2026 15:19

My dad has a blue badge and doesn’t get Pip or any other benefits. Very straightforward and awarded immediately. Submitted a few hospital and GP records.

Isobel201 · 11/08/2026 15:19

Yes I managed to get one before my PIP claim was decided. However, if you have any daily living problems consider applying for PIP. They don't make any decisions on whether you have any actual extra costs or not, and I don't have a mobility car either.

Cherryio · 11/08/2026 15:19

Yes. I applied and I was sent to a physical assessment by my council, they also contacted my GP to ask about my conditions.

I think it varies council to council on what they ask for/how they assess.

macaroon8 · 11/08/2026 15:20

Certainly in my area you dont need pip to get a BB (north Yorkshire )

converseandjeans · 11/08/2026 15:21

My Mum got one after her second hip operation & she has never had PIP or any type of benefit. She was reluctant to apply.

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 11/08/2026 15:24

I applied for one and got it with no issue and I don't receive PIP. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis but was only diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the time.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 11/08/2026 15:24

You don’t need pip to claim a blue badge it just makes the process easier if you do have it. Takes a few weeks to arrive.

Apply for or renew a Blue Badge

Check if you're eligible for a Blue Badge and apply or renew

My mum had a badge for years with no benefits, only gets AA now anyway.

I am on my second badge, no PIP, but I have mobility and balance issues, and qualify for a badge. I did have to appeal the first badge and get a letter from my GP but it was awarded and the renewal was issued with no problems.

Craftysue · 11/08/2026 15:28

Thanks all. It sounds like it's worth a try - I've got plenty of medical evidence! I'm desperately trying to keep working so being able to park near will make a huge difference - I currently have a 10 minute walk from the nearest car park and there are blue badge spaces outside.

Not always. I had to go through an OT assessment in another town (relevant as attending was far more difficult) for a BB and they turned me down.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/08/2026 16:13

My parents both had blue badges and neither received any benefits (except state pensions).

NearlyNewNonny · 11/08/2026 16:19

DM and MIL did, although that's a few years ago now. It's better because the badges last the full three years. My PIP level means I'm automatically entitled, but I'm usually awarded for four years. This is often extended by a year a couple of times before I'm awarded again. This means in six years I can end up paying for five sets of badges costing £50, rather than two.

FullOfMomsense · 11/08/2026 16:24

Yes, give plenty of evidence and you will get it. If it goes to appeal then go for it. Consider applying for PIP now, just in case. You are entitled to it. Put it into savings just in case your mobility does worsen

Craftysue · 11/08/2026 19:52

Thanks all - I will put in an application and keep everything crossed!

So did you claim pip ?

Yes, because my response ‘not always‘ is to your comment ‘you don’t need pip to claim a blue badge it just makes the process easier’. It didn’t.

Thanks for clarifying your original post was unclear.

Thereisalight4 · 13/08/2026 17:14

my mum got one easily recently - no pip just can’t walk any distance - she had help applying via her GP surgery so may be worth asking about that

It really wasn’t. I directly responded to a comment with a ‘not always’, could not have been more obvious.

ToadRage · 13/08/2026 21:51

Yes, i got my blue badge long before i got my PIP. I had a face-to-face interview for my blue badge so the assessor could see i was unsteady on my feet but only given phone assessments for PIP.

thesandwich · 14/08/2026 20:28

It’s worth getting help from cab/ carers Uk etc To complete the forms- they know what to include and how to phrase it.

I was unclear as to whether you were saying ‘not always ‘ to you ‘don’t need pip’ for a blue badge or the second part of my sentence. Thanks for clarifying.

Yes my mum has for arthritis 4x hips and a knee replacement. Nan has for arthritis and being blind. Neither claim any benefits as feel others are more deserving
