We want to find out what Mumsnetters think about the issue of mothers' partners staying overnight on postnatal wards in hospitals.

This survey is open to all UK Mumsnetters. Everyone who completes the survey will be put into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £50 Amazon voucher.

Here's the link again: www.surveymonkey.com/r/33DZDPS

Thanks
MNHQ

horrendous - I used to HATE HATE HATE HATE visiting hours, having strange men wondering all over the place, staring at you, "chatting politely" to you - fuck of you losers I've just given birth....

You cannot relax for a single moment and just count the seconds until visiting is over.

Nightmare.

Done. Awful idea. I hate mixed wards too.
It's all very well saying "if it's a private room" but they all wander out for something sooner or later.
My d-i-l suffered a miscarriage a few years ago and my son asked if he could stay in the (private) room with her while she continued to bleed out, distressed. First they said yes, but then another patient complained so he had to leave. I did feel sorry for them both but hospitals have to have a workable policy, not a patchwork of individual special cases.

Done. It's very difficult. I can understand why some women would need/want their partner to stay, but I can equally see why that might not be pleasant for other women on the ward (I hated it). Private rooms cannot just be conjured out of thin air to accommodate this. Increasing staff levels on the post natal wards so women there don't feel so isolated is possibly a better compromise?

Done, but autocomplete failed me and didn't add the ".com" at the end of my email!

Done. It would be good if the survey had asked if the respondents had experienced this or not.
I did an NHS survey before giving birth and I thought it was a great idea. Then I experienced the reality of it - opinion changed to the opposite. There was no follow up afterwards so I guess on the official stats I'm still counted as thinking it's great.

Lovely idea in principle for the mum whose partner is staying, but not a good idea overall. More staff on wards overnight instead, please!

Done. The idea of the help is nice but as if they have enough staff to make sure safeguarding etc is complied with when they are struggling to attend to everybody as it is!

Do we have to say "Done" on here even though we filled out the survey- I assume so based on these replies?

Done - it was great having DH stay over when I had DC2 in a private room.

Done, I am the lone voice on MN with my POV though! I feel as strongly for it as people are against it.

LieselVonTwat · 09/09/2015 21:15

Done. But you've not included a section for people who don't want male partners to be able to stay in any circumstances, private room or no. It would be better if you'd included that specifically rather than just 'other'. Actually I wouldn't mind it if a private room was guaranteed, but since there isn't a chance in hell that would actually happen, I didn't feel able to endorse any of the partner staying over options.

mumofboyo · 10/09/2015 00:51

Done.

I was actually told to hurry up whilst on the toilet not long after I'd given birth by someone's visiting partner - he shouted through the door that I'd been in there ages (there was quite a bit of blood Blush ).

I was in the patients' loo and hurried up as much as I could because I thought perhaps he was asking so his partner could use it. No - the cheeky sod all but pushed past me when I shuffled out. If I'd been in a stronger frame of mind I'd have told him that he should fuck off and use the visitors' toilet that was down the hall but I was knackered, ill and felt too intimidated to do so. Tosser.
