How much would you earn if you got paid for everything you did at home? Try the Cornhill Direct Calculator and have a chance of winning £100 of vouchers

Apparently the average British family with children spends 73 hours on domestic chores per week; that?s over 65% of the time we?re awake spent on jobs around the house. And the cost of that work, if we were paid at market rates to do it, amounts to an average of £25,000 per family, per year. Cornhill Direct did the research and have come up with a 'household economy calculator', so that you can work out who in your family is worth the most. Just enter details of all the daily and weekly jobs each family member does and it will work out the value of that work (and demonstrate clearly who is doing the most )

Cornhill want to know what you think about the calculator ? obviously it?s a bit of fun but is there a more serious underlying point? is the true value of housework and domestic chores underestimated? are you surprised at how much you?re ?worth?? and was it a surprise to see who in your house is 'worth' the most? There is also anecdotal evidence that as the economy gets worse, everyone is doing more housework ? is this true in your family? Possibly it?s the only area we feel like we have control over at the moment?

You can find the calculator here and one top tip for using it - it gives you a choice as to whether you fill in your hours total for the day, week or month - we'd suggest week or month as we found there wasn't enough to put down for the day... but that may because we are all idle bints at MNHQ

Everyone who tries the calculator and takes part in this discussion will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 of vouchers from a company of your choice.

You can also download a copy of their e-book about managing the family finances if you fancy it.

Thanks

Mine comes out at £62,000. I also work pt. This seems remarkably cheap to me, and no where near the real costs of paying someone else.
It seems to think £5.90 /hr a reasonable cost for childcare for 2 children . I wish my cm had as good rates. Also, £6.20 /hr for petcare seems an odd figure.

skramble · 29/01/2009 00:02

I got 100% and that I am worth £34,000 but I only put after school care, not the 1hr before school or the holidays or the sleepover shift it would count as if I was childminder and had kids overnight.

I don't do much housework really, just enough to tick over.

skramble · 29/01/2009 00:07

My my some are taking this so seriously, its just for fun, and only looking at work done in the home, if a DH is only 20% at home but you don't work outside the home and he does then its up to you if you think that is a fair deal .

I am a lone parent so I know it is pretty much me 100%, kids look after their own stuff and make me cups of tea, I think that is fair. DS will do a bit of ironing and both will help at meal times with setting tables, bit of cooking duties and clearing up. I didn't put any of that in so they came up as -8%, lazy buggers .

Shitemum · 29/01/2009 00:18

72,000 and something with me doing most of it...
Might get different results if DH put in the numbers tho

skramble · 29/01/2009 00:33

LOL it would be interesting for couples to compare DW's results with DH's results. I am sure they would come out with some huge variances.

twentypence · 29/01/2009 02:14

Mine was low - because I refused to divvy up the time taken doing "childcare" ie being in the house with ds. Maybe it would be different if he wasn't at school. I did count picking him up from school and taking him to music though.

Done really understand why all the list couldn't have been there in the first place rather than clunckily adding the ones you wanted.

katiecornhill · 29/01/2009 10:13

hello, thanks for taking the time to fill it in. Good to hear your comments. It is only fun but hopefully quite an illustrative way to see how much (little..) everyone in your house does. What did you think of the percentages? i.e you do 20% more or less than the 'average' mum or dad - was that a surprise? (BTW that's worked out based on figures of everyone that has completed it)

katiecornhill · 29/01/2009 10:34

oh and also good to get your DH/DP to fill it out too and see if your estimations match....

ForeverOptimistic · 29/01/2009 10:54

I have done it. Our total is only £18,453 and I do 63% of the chores, quite embrassing as I am a SAHM .

I can't find a box where I can put that I did this via Mumsnet so how do I get entered for the prize draw?

listenglisten · 29/01/2009 11:03

Our total is £27,784. I do 63% of the work apparantly but think I may have over calculated as DH does about half of the things listed.

I work p/t and probably should be doing some of the domestic chores today instead of being on here!

vonsudenfed · 29/01/2009 11:17

E25,219. That seems very low, and yet at the same time I did more than the average mum (I'd be interested to know how they got the figures for the average mum - I only work one day a week, but is this more or less than average?)

CandleQueen · 29/01/2009 11:17

Our tota is over £62K with me being worth 83%, but then I did put in for 22 hours of childcare a day!

CarrieMumsnet · 29/01/2009 11:39

The fact that you've posted your thoughts on here is the entry requirement for the prize draw. We know who you are grin >

43,540 for dh and me together.
I put 12 hrs a day childcare, becasue he is in bed, but not asleep, for 12

KingCanuteIAm · 29/01/2009 12:48

Oh, to answer the Q in the op about doing more housework, yes we are (actually my children are doing more) BUT I don't see how recession can increase housework, surely the amount of money in bank has no bearing on how often the floors need sweeping does it? (Unless you get into the idea that being unemployed means you drink/eat at home in the day so creating extra washing up )
