How much would you earn if you got paid for everything you did at home? Try the Cornhill Direct Calculator and have a chance of winning £100 of vouchers

Apparently the average British family with children spends 73 hours on domestic chores per week; that?s over 65% of the time we?re awake spent on jobs around the house. And the cost of that work, if we were paid at market rates to do it, amounts to an average of £25,000 per family, per year. Cornhill Direct did the research and have come up with a 'household economy calculator', so that you can work out who in your family is worth the most. Just enter details of all the daily and weekly jobs each family member does and it will work out the value of that work (and demonstrate clearly who is doing the most )

Cornhill want to know what you think about the calculator ? obviously it?s a bit of fun but is there a more serious underlying point? is the true value of housework and domestic chores underestimated? are you surprised at how much you?re ?worth?? and was it a surprise to see who in your house is 'worth' the most? There is also anecdotal evidence that as the economy gets worse, everyone is doing more housework ? is this true in your family? Possibly it?s the only area we feel like we have control over at the moment?

You can find the calculator here and one top tip for using it - it gives you a choice as to whether you fill in your hours total for the day, week or month - we'd suggest week or month as we found there wasn't enough to put down for the day... but that may because we are all idle bints at MNHQ

Everyone who tries the calculator and takes part in this discussion will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 of vouchers from a company of your choice.

You can also download a copy of their e-book about managing the family finances if you fancy it.

Thanks

Gosh. That's astronomical, starlight.

Klaw · 28/01/2009 17:32

[sigh] my ancient imac means that the calculator doesn't work.

I NEED to get paid for all the work I do at home so that I can afford to upgrade my computer.....

GrinnyPig · 28/01/2009 17:33

Calculator thingy is not really very accurate is it.

DH must have been looking over my shoulder while I was doing this because a strange thing is happening - he appears to be emptying the dishwasher. Bet he doesn't fill it up again though!

morethanyoubargainfor · 28/01/2009 17:34

mine was quite scary at £133,985 per year

DH was 24,671.

I think maybe i need to back off a bit!

FAQtothefuture · 28/01/2009 17:34

I also put down that I spend 24hr a day doing childcare too

I contribute 97% of our household "worth" of £76k

I only put in 3 hours a day childcare for me and 2 for DP, but we have 3 young school age children, should we have counted more? I didn't count the times we were doing something else but also looking after children.

ScummyMummy · 28/01/2009 17:43

Well, it sounds a lot to me, starlight, I have no idea if it's going rate, though. Maybe child care tax credit would cover some of it?

DisasterArea · 28/01/2009 17:43

am worth a lot more than DH . although was quite modest with childcare hours. he does much more housework than me though. i don't dare show him. he'll be most affronted.

£40752

I put 12 hours a day childcare (though it is more)

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 28/01/2009 17:53

well, the total worth for our household is £32,616. Seem very low compared to most. I think perhaps I didn't put enough childcare hours in. Just 20pw for me and 10 for dh. Really I suppose it's more isn't it? 24 hour care! Probably should go back and alter it, but not sure I can be arsed

interesting.

Is my cheque in the post then?

Cammelia · 28/01/2009 17:56

I came out as doing 69% of home stuff, dh as 31% and dd as 0%

Dh works f/t employment though and I work p/time.

edam · 28/01/2009 17:56

Maybe Cornhill should offer the person who claims the most hours a cheque to that amount?

Rindercella · 28/01/2009 17:59

It didn't include an option for time spent on mumsnet. This is work isn't it?!

edam · 28/01/2009 18:02

It's definitely research...

Rindercella · 28/01/2009 18:07

Apparently I do 95% of the work; with DH doing 5%. Hardly surprising given that DH has a 2 hour each way commute for work and often puts in 12 hour days and I am a SAHM. Our total worth is £31.5k. Hmm, maybe I should go back to work!

cluelessnchaos · 28/01/2009 18:08

£55,000 for me, £27,000 for dh and 0 for the kids, that is really bad isnt it

Nemoandthefishes · 28/01/2009 18:12

pmsl I like that
I am worth £70,680 per year
DH £9,074 per year
even ds who is 5 is worth £2,289 per year for his pet care..lol
dds are a drain on our finances

JackBauer · 28/01/2009 18:12

I didn't include childcare, not sure if there was an option for benign neglect
Even without that I manage 87% of £20k.
And that's only because DH hoovers and I refuse to make his lunch or touch his stinking socks....

LilRedWG · 28/01/2009 18:18

I contribute 70% of our total 'earning' £46k. DH does the rest. Quite as I'm a SAHM.

ScottishMummy · 28/01/2009 18:20

well no point in me giving up work, the calculation pays me hee haw in comparison.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 28/01/2009 18:21

Oh I like that I am worth 41000 and dh is worth 878.
And I thought he did a lot round here. So hgow can i get someone to pay me this 41000 as it would definalty come in handy.

CharCharGabor · 28/01/2009 18:22

Our total income was £64,550, with me earning £56,430 of that (87%).

eandh · 28/01/2009 18:24

Income was £58000 ish with me doing £50000 of that (I do do everything in the house ie washing, ironing, cleaning, cooking and 99% of childcare plus work part time )
