Itax headlice treatment feedback

carriemumsnet · 08/10/2008 14:05

Hi all

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to test out Itax a new non-chemical programme of head lice lotion spray (2 treatments per bottle RRP £11.99) and soothing 'anti-itching' shampoo (150ml RRP £9.99).

If you weren't one of the volunteers for the product trial, but have already bought and used Itax, please feel free to add your thoughts too.

So, what did you think of it? What was it like to use and did it work? How did it compare to other nit treatments you had used (if any) ?

Everyone who offers feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win Avène Sensitive skincare products for adults and Klorane hair products for children worth over £50.

It's Ok. You can stop scratching now

I only got mine this morning, will be trying it later on DD

shinyshoes · 29/10/2008 08:59

I got mine and have done both treatments.

I loced the smell, it took me back to a child, that really chemically smell.

I have used Full marks and other nit treatments but ITAX by far is the best one.

I have VERY thick hair and I have had alot of dead lice nad nits come out of my hair since using the treatment. I must say I'm not hugely keen on the shampoo, it didn't smell too good and it left my hair quite matted, it wasn't conditioning enough.

Other than that we are hugely pleased we were chosen and massively impressed. It is overpriced but it works so it's worth the money if it does the job.

shinyshoes · 29/10/2008 09:00

sorry, I LOVED the smell.

Typo

Tortington · 29/10/2008 09:15

So, what did you think of it?

it was ok, i like the idea of a spray but took ages, - 2 treatments? from that little can - what on..bald kids?

i liked the packaging. i think the price is about what the others are in the market - so you are not competing on price - free prescriptions sales ?

What was it like to use
laborious. ok ther is not "mum its dripping in my eye!" but it took ages.

i think it would be ok for boys with short hair.
and did it work?

yeah

How did it compare to other nit treatments you had used (if any) ?

the smell was utterly vile and has that unique chemicle smell that some nit lotions do.

now kids get v. self concious of this, mine washed their hair like 3 or 4 times so their friends couldnt smell the nit lotion.

i find hedrin better in this regard, i think its cheaper too.

the smell is v. important if you dont want other mums and kids knowing yours had nits.

it pongs

No comb in mine either but by the sounds of things I wasn't missing out on much.
Tried it out on DD1 (8) and DD2(2) and found it easy too appliy in spray form but not so easy to really get the hair really soaked. DD1 really hated the smell but was grateful that it didn't drip in her eyes like other lotions. Some other treatments work in 10 mins or overnight so had to plan ahead for an hour of application before bathtime. I found it difficult to comb through but thought the shampoo was brilliant as other lotions have left the girls hair limp and greasy looking even after a couple of washes whereas after using this their hair was clean, soft and no chemical smell could be detected. Not sure if I would buy again as it does seem pricy when compared to other treatments. A suggestion could be for a smaller bottle of shampoo to bring the price down as I've still got lots left.

filthymindedSixSixSixen · 29/10/2008 09:57

I didn't notice the smell within a minute or two of using it...

I have used vinegar before no (cheap and does seem to work) and that does reek - for a short while

Just remembered I need to comb again today...

Podrick · 29/10/2008 10:01

OneRainyDay is bang on the money

Pound shop conditioner and a good comb eg bug buster is the way to go...

The most effective way, the safest way and also the cheapest way.

Just comb every 4 days, if lice get progressively smaller then 4 sessions is enough. If they get bigger you have a new louse and need to start counting your sessions again.

Podrick · 29/10/2008 10:03

no bad smells with the combing method either

memoo · 29/10/2008 19:53

I've just done DD with the itax.

I love the fact that it is a spray, it usually takes me ages to coat DD's very thick hair in headlice lotions but this only took a few minutes.

The smell was very strong though, but don't mind this as long as it works.

I combed DD's hair after the hour instructed and removed 2 dead lice.

I love the fact that it doens't have to stay on for 12 hours like a lot of lotions.

I found it quite hard to wash out, needed 3 shampoos. But the smell wasn't bad afterwards. I have found with some treatment the smell lingers for days, even after a few shampoos

ShrinkingViolet · 29/10/2008 20:01

Did DD3 this morning, and was (moderately) impressed. The spray smells horrible, and it's difficult to work out when you've used half, but I much prefered using a spray to a bottle.
Seemed very effective at killing the lice, will wait a few days to confirm that though.
The shampoo was good too, although it didn't lather up very well (I'm sure I read here that European formulations of shampoo don't lather as much as UK ones?). We used rather a lot of shamppo but it cleared off the spray easily. Nice smell.
Not sure how it compares price-wise to other nit treatments, btu if it works (and means that if we miss one with ordinary nit-combing, all the hard work hasn't gone to waste) then I might consider using it again.

ScareyBitchFeast · 29/10/2008 23:41

no comb here either.
spray took a lot of "goes" to get relatively short hair wet. is it meant for one child only?
meant to be done in a well ventilated room which was worrying.
couldnt tolerate the whole hour, not the fault of the product.
the follow up shampoo made her head itchy, and still itchy the next day.

MamaG · 30/10/2008 14:16

I'm posting again as I've just done the "one week later" comb out

V pleased to report that DS was completely nit free (but does have v short hair)

Got either lots of teeny weeny ones out of DD's hair, or lots of little black eggs. So small I couldn't tell whihc they were. NO big ones, live ones so delighted.

I would recommend to a friend.

Yes, a decent comb nad a pound shop bottle of conditioner does work, but sometimes you just want to zap the fuckers don't you? Then keep up with combing afterwards. I do, anyway.

Only JUSt managed to get 2 applications from teh little can and DS's hair is very short, as I said. SHampoo was nice

spamm · 30/10/2008 14:21

Sorry - not used it yet as ds remains nit free - yay.

Maybe back to school will mean that he needs a treatment. Will let you know next week.

AnnMumsnet · 30/10/2008 15:57

Thanks everyone - please do post again a week after treatment to see how effective the treatment has been.

heronsfly · 30/10/2008 17:20

Mine arrived today {grin]
Will start testing and report in a week.

lou33 · 30/10/2008 17:21

i got mine yesterday, will be testing it this weekend

filthymindedSixSixSixen · 30/10/2008 17:51

did the one week later comb today. Found one dead lice.

Pollyanna · 31/10/2008 12:35

did it last night. Smell is really horrible (I did 3 children though). I may have problems persuading them to repeat this next week.

I found it much easier to comb after the shampoo rather than the lotion. (so I combed twice).

I possibly found a couple of eggs in dd3's hair, nothing in the other dds. I am going to do my hair tonight.

AGree that the spray doesn't go very far and it is very difficult to coat the hair sufficiently, but all of their hair looks very glossy this morning.

charmander · 02/11/2008 08:55

I found the spray quite hard work to do on myself. The smell was really bad to start with but i soon gor used to it.
There was no comb, but my box did not say there was. It was quite easy to comb through and I liked the shampoo.
My two older boys are nit free at the moment and my youngest one is only 2 so he could not use it.So i was the onlyone to use it.

MCSomerset · 02/11/2008 16:30

Thanks for the trial package. The spray is easy to apply and doesn't smell too strong and doesn't drip, so gets top marks for all those things. However, I used half the bottle of spray on my son's hair as its thick, there wasn't enough to do 2 children for 2 weeks, which kind of defeats the object....reinfestation??

Don't think the shampoo is really necesary as we all have shampoo we can use.

lou33 · 02/11/2008 16:58

the spray takes too long to apply , imo, it doesnt smell very nice either, and dd2 was really not keen on it, but it did kill all the lice, and i will reapply it again after 7 days

so far thought i prefer hedrin

lou33 · 02/11/2008 17:00

*though

there was no comb provided, should there have been?

heronsfly · 02/11/2008 17:26

I have used mine for the first round.
I did not mind the smell, reminded me of the stuff we used to be given to clean newly pierced ears with.
I found it hard to cover whole head, but when combed with nitty gritty, found several dead lice and just one live one.
Shampoo was ok I suppose, did not lather well, and dont think hair looked smooth and knot free after washing.
Im normally of the cheap conditioner and nitty gritty brigade,so although effective I think the price would put me off this product.
