Are you looking to declutter, or have stuff you have been meaning to sell but haven’t got round to it yet? Selling regularly but not using eBay? This is the test for you!

We have been asked by the team at eBay, to find 1000 MNers to put them to the test and to share their feedback on a survey.

For this test we are specifically looking for UK Mumsnetters that never listed an item on eBay before (first time listers) and users that haven’t listed anything for the last 365 days.

What is eBay?
~ eBay is the world's biggest online marketplace; a place for buyers and sellers to come together and buy or sell almost anything!
~ A seller lists an item on eBay, from antiques to cars, books to sporting goods. The seller chooses to accept only bids for the item (an auction-style listing) or to offer the Buy It Now option, which allows buyers to purchase the item straight away at a fixed price.
~ In an online auction-style listing, the bidding opens at a price the seller specifies and remains on eBay for a certain number of days. Buyers then place bids on the item. When the listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid wins.
~ In a Buy It Now listing, the first buyer willing to pay the seller's price gets the item. Buying and selling on eBay is easy and it's fun.

Note:
All testers will need to create (or use their existing) eBay account and also have a PayPal account - if you don’t have an eBay account then you will need to create one before signing up.

All testers will need to be registered members of Mumsnet.
All testers will need to agree to list two items on eBay (for at least 14 days or more) which they would like to sell. We will send selected testers some guidance and support on how to add a listing.
Limited to 1000 testers. Sign up before 10th September at the latest (recruitment might close earlier than this). T&Cs apply - please read.
Listings must start between the 21st August and 30th September.
Selling and listing an item on eBay can and does incur small fees - for more info see here and there's a fee calculator here.

All testers will need to share feedback after they have completed their listing on a survey form (we will email you a link).

If you’re interested in taking part, please sign up here.

All those selected (if selected, you will be emailed by Mumsnet) and who go through the process of listing at least two items each via eBay and sharing their feedback on a survey by 16 October 2017 will be sent a £20 PayPay credit by eBay at the end of the project (by end of October) as well as being entered into a prize draw where one person will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list) from Mumsnet.

Thanks and good luck!

MNHQ

I too gave up on eBay. Costs too high to make it worth the effort, plus too many dishonest buyers. I sell on local Facebook sites now. Final price may be lower but I still get more!

woodpecker2 · 29/08/2017 16:59

I just sold something on eBay and the winner just changed their mind and decided they didn't want it. Not really worth the hassle is it, to wait a week and no sale at the end of it.

AtSea1979 · 31/08/2017 10:58

Stopped using EBay as they always side with the buyer even when sent recorded delivery.
I'd rather give my stuff to charity for the pittance you get after fees and the hassle of posting and packaging/waiting in for no show collectors.
Charity shops will benefit so much more.

Applied :)
Been selling/buying on eBay for ages now and loved it :)

SteampunkPrincess · 01/09/2017 19:14

i was going to sell a motorbike on eBay - but its £10 to list it - Gumtree... free, facebook ...free

fees are WAY too high

chancerprancer · 02/09/2017 08:03

Well.... this thread is going well as a promotion for selling on eBay - NOT!
I agree with PP, it's just not worth it now. Fees are way too high and so is the risk.

leccybill · 02/09/2017 10:07

Would also agree that eBay is dreadful now compared to 5 years ago.

I'd be interested to read the feedback from this trial (hope it's all honesty considering there's a £20 bribe going)

SteampunkPrincess · 02/09/2017 10:14

just going to put this here - ebay is terrible

They want ONE THOUSAND Mumsnetters to sign up???

ONE THOUSAND????

That's a bit ambitious??

SandyDenny · 02/09/2017 12:54

I too have given up selling because it's not worth the high fees and risk of buyers lying about things. And also as a buyer I lost out because the postman signed for an item, left it outside the house and it disappeared. Of course I couldn't prove it was the postie's signature but it certainly wasn't mine.

Facebook selling pages are good

AccrualIntentions · 02/09/2017 20:07

It's shifted far too much in favour of the buyer. Selling stuff is a big risk now.

GoGoGazelle · 03/09/2017 13:08

I hate selling stuff as it's so common for the buyer to say they've not received an item. Plus the fees make it not worth the time and effort.

WindyWednesday · 04/09/2017 09:35

That eBay thread ^^ is exactly why I don't eBay anymore.

Feathersapphire · 05/09/2017 21:00

I used to sell quite a few clothes on eBay and enjoyed it, did make around £300 one Christmas from good quality clothes I no longer wore. Then items started going for far less than I wanted and with the fees it wasn't worth the effort. Just looked up my account and last time I sold anything was about 5 years ago so have signed up for this to see if there's any improvement.

SillyMoomin · 05/09/2017 21:22

I withdrew my name from the selection of this after reading some of these comments

Will MNHQ even be able to find 1000 mnetters to sign up?!

Ogochukwu27 · 06/09/2017 07:40

Signed up, but I think with two user ids I just changed it from the old one. Mumsnet do bear with me

Lovedlost · 06/09/2017 19:20

I'll sign up.
Haven't listed anything in ages, but needs must right now!

mrsnoon · 09/09/2017 08:05

Avoid!!! No seller protection and no way of leaving feedback to warn other sellers of non-paying bidders. You can have a postage receipt with the buyers address on it but eBay won't accept that as proof you've sent the item - has to be tracked proof of delivery which no buyers want to pay for. Good luck signing people up for this one.

DreamsInBlack · 11/09/2017 23:41

This opportunity came at the perfect time as I am looking to declutter and also to earn a little extra money. I had considered Ebay in the past for selling but never tried it as there are so many negative seller stories. Sellers seem to be treated less well than buyers. Why, I can't fathom. I've sold stuff via Facebook where there were no fees and the process was simple so I look forward to comparing my experiences.

ASDismynormality · 16/09/2017 18:01

I've put some childrens clothes up for sale to see what it's like. I also have some board games and some books that are more valuable but am trying it with items worth less first!

snowplop · 18/09/2017 12:46

I'm doing this. I haven't sold anything on ebay for a really long time, and now I do so again with some trepidation after reading the comments above. I've listed a game - brand new but with a damaged box, and a watch that I've worn a couple of times. Hopefully I won't get scammed. Will report back in due course.

muminthecity · 18/09/2017 19:22

I wish I'd seen all of these comments before I signed up! Oh well, I've done it now, listed some kids clothes, will see what happens.

MoanaofMotunui · 19/09/2017 07:44

Hosted a few bits last night, just to see how they go. A little disappointed already as the photo upload quality is terribleSad

MummyBtothree · 19/09/2017 13:38

Anyone using eBay be careful - there's alot of scammers out there at the moment selling & we also got our bank account hacked into via PayPal through no fault of our own. Needless to say that we no longer use it.

Theimpossiblegirl · 20/09/2017 19:13

I'm quite nervous about this product test now, but have listed some dresses and tops. Hoping not to encounter any scammers. Will be sending everything Second Class signed for so fingers crossed.
That's if anything sells.
:)
