This thread is for the 70 Mumsnetters who have been testing the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier (RRP £199.99).

Here’s what Fellowes have to say: “Studies indicate that indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Combined with the fact that many people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, it starts to become clear why the quality of indoor air is so important. Environment Protection Agency
The Fellowes AeraMax™ Air Purifiers use a combination of the most effective filtration and cleaning methods as part of a 4-stage filtration process to remove 99.97% of airborne pollutants and particles down to 0.3 microns in size. This level of performance combined with a feature set and interface designed for any indoor environment, makes it the perfect clean air solution.”

Mumsnet bloggers have also reviewed the Fellowes AeraMax DX55. You can view their posts at emmaand3, hodgepodgedays, themadhouseofcatsandbabies, chammyirl and tantrumstosmiles.

Afraid I'm not convinced. DS has dust mite allergy and suffers quite severly despite recommended interventions. The air purifier gives out a very 'artificial' smell which you pick up as soon as you walk in his bedroom. Also no improvement in his symptoms.

Hopefully we'll see some improvement soon.

BiscuitMillionaire · 08/02/2017 16:20

I am impressed with how hi-tech it is. I love the coloured light to indicate the air quality. It is pretty quiet, with a gentle draft of air. The children have noticed it makes a faint high-pitched whine, which I can't hear (probably dogs can hear it!).

I suffer from asthma and rhinitis from allergies, mainly to mould, house-dust mites and some pollen. My asthma is usually much worse in autumn, and quite bad in the spring, but is minimal at the moment. So it's hard to say whether it will reduce my symptoms.

In the house we're in currently, the air quality has been mostly 'blue', with occasional 'amber' but never 'red' - even after vaccuming, which surprised me. Plus we have a cat. But we are going to be moving back to another property where I think the air quality is worse, so I will be very interested to see what the reading is there, and if the air purifier makes a difference. We have an open fire here, and after the wind blew quite a lot of ash into the air (down the chimney), I put the purifier on and it reduced the smell of ash. I also moved it to the kitchen when drying laundry on a heated airer, which usually fills the room with the smell of detergent/softener, and it definitely improved on this (another potential allergen). The fan may even have helped it to dry more quickly.

It's too early to say. The test will come with summer pollens and especially in the autumn.
  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
Not so far - see above.

I filled in the survey but messed up when filling out my email address at the end and missed off the first letter off the address, "y" duh!

JOEYDOESNTSHAREFOOD · 09/02/2017 19:43

currently feels as though the air as fresher. Animal allergies have lessened and that itching at the back of my throats has ceased to be as irritating.

as other posters have said, hay fever season, in combination with these allergies will be the real test.

In our home we have severely asthmatic husband , a long haired dog & a house rabbit.

The first machine that was sent to us broke that very same day - something exploded inside. A replacement was kindly sent to us.

The quality of the air indicator never changed from the blue light when our pets were in close vicinity of the purifier which makes me a bit sceptical.

I have not noticed less dust and I haven't particularly noticed that the air is any "cleaner".

I have noticed that it blows out extremely cold air which is not particularly helpful when it is being used upstairs at night time.

To put the purifier on any setting other than minimum it is also a noisy machine - noisy enough to interfere with the television sound.

The main benefit I would say we have found is that it has mopped up any lingering cooking smells, so has been best utilised downstairs.

Sad to say that this does not appeared to have improved my husbands asthma symptoms.

Whether it will make any difference when the pollen worsens it will be interesting to see.

I am really grateful to have been chosen - thankyou so much - but in being honest I would have to say that I can not recommend this product - I will purchase another purifier for upstairs but it will be a different brand I am afraid .

NoMudNoLotus · 12/02/2017 22:04

Stunt D & V is transmitted by the faecal - oral route ... the purifier will have had no impact on this - you clearly practice good hygiene or are very lucky !

alibubbles · 13/02/2017 09:14

I turned it off in our room for a few nights as it was so noisy, but the catarrh is back, (tmi) it had gone to white but is now back to orangey-green - yuk!

Back in our room today all day and hopefully it won't be too noisy, we can't hear the TV!

Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?

I have noticed it responding when deodorant is used around it. However, we're having building work done at the moment and haven't noticed it making much different to the dustiness of the air (though there is a lot of dust so perhaps not fair). Will be interesting to see how it fares when we get to summer and there is more pollen, etc for it to filter out.

  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?

Unfortunately we've all had stinking colds for the last couple of weeks so would be hard for anything to make any difference. Also, the lights are too bright at nighttime, so can't have it on overnight in the bedroom which is a shame.

maddiemostmerry · 13/02/2017 18:08

Bit of extra feedback.

Last week my cat allergy was quite bad, cats seemed to be shedding a lot. My eyes were very sore and itchy but I did manage to stop myself rubbing them too much.
Still think I need to test the purifier over a much longer period to see benefits that could be linked to purifier.

Wearegoingtobedlehem · 13/02/2017 21:07

I have been lucky enough to test and review the Fellows Aeramax 😀

  • Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?
Since having the air purifier on i do think the air feels more clear. It's hard to explain but it definitely feels fresher. The lights on it indicate how hard it is working in order to purify the air. Reassuringly it doesn't seem to have to work too hard in our house as yet. It does pick up on people bathing/ showering/ spraying deodorant etc. Whilst the lights are a very useful indicator they are too bright if used in a bedroom.
  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
It's a little early in the year for us to know how much it has helped with our hay fever- but interestingly a friend visited us yesterday, who is allergic to our dog, yet had no reaction for the hours that she was in the house.

It's an impressively slim line design - and certainly doesn't look out of place in the home. Very simple, easy to use and user friendly.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 14/02/2017 00:28

Just a little update. I thought cigarette smoke would put the air purifier to red but it tends to run amber most of the time. Surprisingly if anyone walks in the room when they have recently sprayed deodorant (I would say within the last 20 minutes) it goes red and stays that way for a while.

So from that I'm guessing spraying deodorant is worse for the air quality than ciggarette smoke - interesting and unexpected.

TenaciousOne · 15/02/2017 22:39

Thanksforallthefish I find deodorant as bad a cigarette smoke in terms of my asthma. I don't know anyone who smokes any more so haven't tested it with cigarette smoke but I did spray deodorant in the bathroom and then went in the bedroom and it went amber for me.
I've noticed in the bedroom at roughly 2am it switches to amber and wakes me up as it ramps up the fan. I would really like to know what happens that it's blue all day long but in the middle of the night it changes to amber.

MrsMarigold · 16/02/2017 18:12

Bloody cat did a poo next to the air purifier and it stayed blue. Hmmmm.
