This thread is for the 70 Mumsnetters who have been testing the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier (RRP £199.99).

Here’s what Fellowes have to say: “Studies indicate that indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Combined with the fact that many people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, it starts to become clear why the quality of indoor air is so important. Environment Protection Agency
The Fellowes AeraMax™ Air Purifiers use a combination of the most effective filtration and cleaning methods as part of a 4-stage filtration process to remove 99.97% of airborne pollutants and particles down to 0.3 microns in size. This level of performance combined with a feature set and interface designed for any indoor environment, makes it the perfect clean air solution.”

Mumsnet bloggers have also reviewed the Fellowes AeraMax DX55. You can view their posts at emmaand3, hodgepodgedays, themadhouseofcatsandbabies, chammyirl and tantrumstosmiles.

I've recommended it on Asthma UK, and my cleaner is going to order one for her son. Word is spreading

kelsuprise · 31/01/2017 23:08

Am really pleased that we were chosen to test this product, thank you.

Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?

100% absolutely. We placed the purifier on the upstairs landing outside the bedrooms. Hard to describe, but the air upstairs feels really crisp and fresh, as if the windows have all been open all day.

Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
I have definitely noticed that my breathing at night seems clearer and I'm not waking up with a headache.

Smallest has a cold that seems to ease a little when upstairs (not really sure why that is but putting it down to purifier.

As pollen season is not yet on us, can't say what effect this will have on some of the family, but it's looking very promising so far!

Moogdroog · 01/02/2017 14:30

Firstly, thank you so much for letting me test the AeraMax, and secondly, apologies for the slow feedback - I wanted to give it a good test before saying anything, which I've now done!

Set up was incredibly easy - a quick glance at the instruction booklet, and I was away. I've kept it on the auto function the whole time, but will experiment more with the other settings.

  • Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?
Yes, I think so. I've tried it for a week downstairs, and a week upstairs on the landing, and the air feels fresh and clear. Hard to explain, but it does feel better.
  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
I think so yes. I've had a nasty cold the last week, which normally results in me being quite wheezy - much less so this time around. DS seems to be also less rattley in the chest, and he's not been too good at taking his preventer of late, so it seems to be doing the job. I think for us, the onset of Spring and pollen season will be the biggest test, DS suffered quite badly last year and the purifier will be living in his room then I think.

Other comments - it's pretty quiet once it settles down, though it does seem to make a funny electrical noise when it first switches on. This goes quite quickly. Kids have been enjoying the 'fart-test' and making it turn red. It does blow out fairly chilly air, which will be a blessing in summer, but not so much this time of year.

All in all, I'll be recommending it to anyone I think might benefit. Thanks Mumsnet and Fellowes!

FeelingSmurfy · 01/02/2017 18:27

I've seen a few people mention it can't go by a wall, what do you mean? Does it not look odd being away from a wall, is the wire not a tripping hazard?

vincenta · 01/02/2017 21:00

Thanks you for choosing me to test Fellowes AeraMax air purifier! I mostly used auto function and air purifier stayed in every room. It was easy to carry it around house.

Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?
Yes.Air felt fresher and cleaner. I will agree with other testers that air comes out little bit chilli and this is not so exciting at winter time, but looking forward to use it on summer. Fellowes AeraMax Air Purifier work quite and attractive blue light looks great too. All in all this is stylish device which looks good in every room and is easy to use. Also it is good at removing odour.

  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
My husband started to get little bit itchy eyes from our kitten but last 2 weeks he wasn't complaining .I even asked how he felt and he told that everything is great. of course it could be just coincidence but he started to feel much better after I started to use air purifier. He suffer from hayfever and at summer month feels so miserable that I can't wait to see how much difference will Air purifier. I feel myself better too as I don't have stuffed nose anymore, not sure what was the culprit in our new house, dust mites or something else but I feel myself better too.
ilovesprouts · 02/02/2017 17:51

I got picked to test this product and I didn't reply to the email in time (only had the one email ) so somebody else had it 😨.

StuntNun · 02/02/2017 20:03

Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?
Yes, the house 'feels' fresher when the air purifier is running. We have tried it in individual bedrooms and on the upstairs landing. Once hayfever season hits we may end up buying another unit or even two if we find it's making a bit difference to our family members with hayfever.

Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?
I've delayed giving feedback to allow extra time but I think it will be hayfever season before there's a huge amount of evidence. What I have noticed is that my two youngest (4 years and 22 months) have been coughing a lot less at night whether it's in their room or just outside the door to their (small) room.

I haven't noticed as much difference to my own allergies (dust and cats) when it's in my room BUT my DH can't sleep with it running even though it's really quiet on the lowest setting.

One thing that I like is that it revs up when there's a lot of material in the air, for example when somebody is cooking something smoky.

Other comments

My overall impression is that this is an excellent unit and it will make a big difference to my family's symptoms. It isn't magic though and it needs to be used in conjunction with other allergy relief strategies such as having hard floors, cleaning regularly, keeping windows closed in hayfever season etc. My oldest child (14 years old) has extremely severe hayfever, despite having two years of immunotherapy, so if it can provide him with some relief then that would be amazing.

As I said earlier I think I need to wait for hayfever season since that is the worst time for my family but so far I have been very happy with the improvement in air quality, although it has made me aware that I need to be more strict about keep dust at bay!

Shiraznowplease · 03/02/2017 04:33

I have just ordered another one for downstairs. My husbands peak flow readings are steadily increasing and I swear he is snoring less. I think the improvement we will see come march when the seasonal allergies kick in will be amazing. I have recommended it to another mum at school too.
Thank you mumsnet for picking me 😘

insan1tyscartching · 03/02/2017 10:37

Yes another here definitely considering buying a second unit before hayfever season strikes as ds is definitely starting to feel the difference now and there has been a small but definite improvement in his peak flow readings.

MrsMarigold · 03/02/2017 13:38

Thanks for choosing me, I've got a question, I would consider buying a few units but would like to know about the products energy consumption as I don't want to be landed with a big electricity bill. Is that possible Justine?

StuntNun · 03/02/2017 16:28

It's a shame the survey didn't allow you to leave comments. I put that the price of £199.99 wasn't good value for money but I would have liked to add that my reason for that is that I would need to buy multiple units. Realistically I would need at least three of these, probably four which would work out very expensive so I would be more likely to settle for a cheaper version. Maybe Fellowes should consider selling sets where you buy one of the bigger units and two or three of the small units together at a discounted price.

Boodles · 03/02/2017 18:02

I have really enjoyed testing this product. I was keen to do it as I have a child who suffers with allergies and I also have asthma which can be triggered by dust and pet dander.

  • Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?

Yes I think that the air seems to be fresher. Also, when I was using it in our kitchen/family room area the cooking smells went away far quicker (I would love one for in the bathroom lol)

  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier

I also tried this in my bedroom for a while. I noticed that during this time I slept better with my asthma symptoms, which often come during the night, being much better. I am considering buying another unit to keep in my sons room to help him too.

Looking forward to hayfever season now, it is usually a nightmare in our house as it can get really bad. I think that this unit is really going to come into its own then.

FannyFifer · 03/02/2017 19:05

Where's the survey? Not filled that out yet.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 03/02/2017 23:56

Survey link was sent out in an email FannyFifer - On Monday if I remember correctly.

NellVarnish · 04/02/2017 11:25

Still loving the air purifier and feel it has made a difference to my asthma. Less use of inhalers. Recommended it to someone at work who has had an air purifier in the past and misses his. He was going to buy a Dyson, but is keen to see how the Fellowes performs.

DS has been back from uni twice on flying visits washing and dinner mainly and hasn't sneezed or wheezed once! He commented that the air felt crisper.

I've filled in the brief survey, and like a PP I would've been happy to fill in a longer version to be able to comment more on the questions. Although I guess Fellowes are getting the main feedback from this thread.

Thanks again for picking me, I'm really impressed so far. Hay fever season here we come!

FoxTeaParty · 04/02/2017 12:30
  • Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?

Most definitely. I have tried it in different rooms of the house and I find the air feels cleaner and it also removes odours quite quickly.

  • Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?

We haven't had it on over night due to the brightness of the lights, but i noticed a difference in dhs breathing after having it on all day in the bedroom.

I think it will be well used during hayfever season.

alibubbles · 05/02/2017 13:12

I've had to turn it off, it doesn't like my eucalyptus diffuser that I am using for a bad chest at the moment.

It also keeps going randomly red in the middle of the night and waking me up, and taking an age to calm down!

Burntbum · 05/02/2017 14:03

I've moved mine from DS's room. I stopped his nasal spray as was hoping that the purifier would improve his symptoms but unfortunately it didn't Sad.

It's now in my room and I have been waking up much less congested and with no headache. However DH has said that we can't have it in there anymore as the lights are too bright. A nighttime option when you can dim the lights would be perfect.

tobecontinued2000 · 05/02/2017 16:29

I draped a folded pillowcase over the lights and it was fine, maybe cover the panel with some felt or folded newspaper?

tobecontinued2000 · 05/02/2017 16:32

I'm buying another one. A worthy investment.

AngelBlue12 · 06/02/2017 13:20

Q:
Do you feel like using the Fellowes AeraMax DX55 Air Purifier has changed the quality of your air?

A:
I suffer with various allergies, asthma and also multiple sclerosis. I live on a dusty farm next to a very large grain store. As a result the Air Purifier would be hitting the ground hard.

Since using the machine I've been very impressed with the filter ability; if someone has recently put deodorant on the machine will kick into high gear. Other times I may not be conscious of any perceived change and yet the device will kick in and work harder for a time.

It typically will be used in the kitchen as the animals are fed there and it's useful for making the air fresher!

It is light and portable, also energy efficient. No impact on household bills.

Q:
Have you or your family members noticed any change in the symptoms of allergies or breathing since you’ve been using the Fellowes AeraMax air purifier?

A:
My pet allergies are definitely less pronounced. My asthma seems to be stable at present. As the Spring approaches it will again be invaluable due to our location. Typically my eyes will react strongly to the dander of the cats but this happens a lot less in the vicinity of the purifier.

We are expecting a new baby soon and I'll be interested in using it to make sure the air quality is good for the baby.

I'm impressed with the overall performance of the machine - thank you.

70ontheinside · 06/02/2017 19:05

Ok, I have now successfully simulated hay fever season at home in the form of a lovely bouquet of flowers. Most people know not to give me flowers as I am allergic to everything. Anyway, somebody gave me flowers and I still have them a few days later!

The air purifier is living up to my high expectations. It really cleans the air of allergens and for the first time in a very long time flowers have not gone in the bin after one day.

TenaciousOne · 07/02/2017 16:09

I agree with those who say the air feels crisper. I turned it off while I went away for a couple of days and really noticed a difference when I came back. Turned it on and it was blue but then did the hoovering and it went to red.
DS isn't as stuffed up as he can be in the morning as well.

Shiraznowplease · 08/02/2017 07:34

Still no courses of steroids for my dh asthma 🎉🍾👍

StuntNun · 08/02/2017 10:32

My DS3 has been ill with a D&V bug since Sunday and so far no-one else has got it. Normally with these type of illnesses all four kids succumb pretty quickly. So maybe the air purifier is removing the bug from the air effectively.
