This is the feedback thread for the 15 MNers who tested the Atomist Vapour Iron, but also NON TESTERS sharing their top tips on ironing.

Here’s what Morphy Richards says about the Atomist Vapour Iron: “For consumers who live in hard water areas, they can find that limescale continually affects and damages their products, and this is a concern that Morphy Richards heavily focused on when developing the Atomist Vapour Iron. As the iron doesn’t produce limescale, it directly eliminates the prospect of unsightly white marks appearing on clothes while ironing, meaning that clothes never have to be re-washed because of limescale marks. The iron is also ideal for those who are looking to use products that aren’t harmful to the environment, as the Redefine Atomist Iron uses less water and energy than a standard steam iron.”

Testers, please tell us what you thought about the iron. Here are some questions to get you started, but please feel free to add your own comments too. Please also add any photos you’ve taken to the feedback thread.

• How did the Atomist Vapour Iron compare to your usual iron?
• What did you think were the benefits of the Atomist Vapour Iron?
• Did it make ironing usual items of clothing easier? If yes, why? If no, why not?
• What did you think the benefits were of vapour over steam?
• Why did you want to take part in this test and what iron did you previously have?

Please now write a review about the Atomist Vapour Iron in the Mumsnet household appliances review section here here

Please also write a review in the Morphy Richards review section here

Testers who have given their feedback and written a review will be able to keep their irons as a thank you.

Non-tester.
I always give clothes a really good shake to get rid of the creases before hanging them on the line to dry and make sure they're hanging straight and the pegs are positioned so that they won't leave indents in the middle of the clothes - pegging at the armpit for example. I'm still working on getting DH to do the same. He prefers to just hang things up in a completely haphazard manner with a peg or 2 in the middle.
I get everything set up first - plenty of hangers, jug of spare water etc.
I only ever iron with something good to watch on to or some decent music to listen to. I need to be distracted from the fact I'm ironing.

+++++SHAMEFUL TIP ALERT+++++

only iron the bits you can see..... (time to crawl back under the rock....)

CheeseAtFourpence · 02/04/2016 18:33

Non tester:

Avoid at all costs. I buy skinny jeans, stretchy vests and anything that doesn't require ironing. If I have to do it I put on a favourite programme or music to get through it.

Hamiltoes · 02/04/2016 19:08

Buy clothing that doesn't need ironing 😁

Don't wait until you have a mountain of ironing to do before you tackle it. I always watch/listen to something while getting on with it.

FeelingSmurfy · 03/04/2016 07:53

Do it as each washload is dry, it's less daunting than a huge stack of ironing

Listen to some music while you iron

I iron cotton shirts which the boys wear on special occasions (if they need ironed) I don't iron anything else. It's pretty speedy.

MakeTeaNotWar · 03/04/2016 09:38

Non-tester - dry clothes on the washing line when weather suits, clothes require less ironing that way. If I must iron, just bite the bullet and don't procrastinate and think of the satisfying crease-free bundle that is the result!

Fizzyboo · 03/04/2016 11:09

Always have a spray bottle of water to spritz on whatever you're about to iron!

Fold clothes after washing so they don't need ironing.

Never watch anything too exciting whilst ironing or like me you'll burn a hole in your clothes Blush

I have no dryer so I smooth my clothes as soon as they come out of the washer and before I hang them up on the drying rack.

I have a steam generator iron and it certainly works much better than a normal steam iron

I tend to iron things whilst slightly damp which helps

Music to bop to or dcd box sets to watch also help!

Byrdie · 03/04/2016 18:24

Non tester. I find one of those spray bottles filled with water from my condenser dryer works well for me. I spray it first then iron plus for shirts use a starch spray which makes a big difference. The other tip is to stick it on to tumble dry low for 10 mins, hang it up damp and then iron once almost dry.

firsttimemum15 · 03/04/2016 18:36

Use a water spray bottle to dampen clothes a little for smooth ironing.

Tester here. Thank you Mumsnet for offering me the chance to try.

How did the Atomist Vapour Iron compare to your usual iron?
Having previously used a Philips Steam Generator Iron I am used to a quick, powerful, product. This iron looked incredibly futuristic. It was much lighter than the Philips and could be carried under one arm. The ironing was different. It took some getting used to to ensure a smooth result. The clear view plate really helped knowing when items were ready. I loved the light when using the vapour tool. It really helped knowing where you were focusing on. However, it does not show too brightly in artificial light.

What did you think were the benefits of the Atomist Vapour Iron?
I commented to DH that is reminded me of how my great-gran would have ironed. Vapour and heat. It is just the modern equivalent of this. I expected the benefits to be similar to a pressure iron.

Did it make ironing usual items of clothing easier?
Yes and no. Some items it seemed to work well on. Lightweight items such as t-shirts and kids clothes. Heavy duty items such as corduroy or linen it didn't really deliver on. I found they had to be sprayed quite heavily to get them smooth and then they had to be ironed excessively to get rid of the dampness. It seemed to take much longer on heavier duty items.

What did you think the benefits were of vapour over steam?
I loved the light showing where you were spraying. I liked seeing exactly where the vapour was going.

Why did you want to take part in this test and what iron did you previously have?
My previous Iron was a Philips and it had finally given up the ghost after a long 5 years worth of work! It literally broke the same week that the product test was offered. I also use a Morphy Richards specifically for quilting. The clear view plate on the Morphy Richards vapour iron would be really handy for quilting.

Happyguinea · 03/04/2016 20:45

I set a timer and when the alarm goes off I stop. As I know I've got 20 mins til the alarm goes off, I focus and whizz through the family ironing. Although watching TV makes it more enjoyable I find that I just dawdle as I get sucked in to what I'm watching.

clopper · 03/04/2016 21:08

Careful hanging and folding initially to minimise the ironing. Don't let the pile build up. Adjust the board to the correct height. Encourage older DC to become part of the ironing rota. When I have a big load I intersperse easy and quick items like pillowcases with clothes I hate ironing such as trousers. Sometimes I try to make it part of my keepfit routine when trying to lose weight so I will take each item upstairs as I do it....cheaper than the gym!

I wait until I've got a big pile of clothing to iron so I can get through it all in one sitting. I usuallly set the board up at a low height so I can iron while sitting down (and usually watch TV or listen to music to keep boredom at bay). I do my DDs stuff first, as it's small and quick, then mine. We're an enlightened household, so if my DH wants ironed clothing then he does it for himself!! Wink

My top tips for ironing are:

  1. Set up ironing board and plug in iron
  2. Wrestle with remote until you've found iplayer on the TV and then tune in to episode one of the Night Manager
  3. Repeat step one and two (forwarding onto the next episode each day)
  4. By episode 3, you're searching the house for MORE ironing in order to justify watching gorgeous men and scenery for an hour every afternoon. Every shirt, every pillowcase, every pair of socks has a knife edge crease down them.

Stop caring about having flat clothes. Spend time saved by not ironing on MN agreeing that ironing is a patriarchal tyranny.

Elliecherry · 04/04/2016 08:55

Non tester: I only iron things that really need ironing. I also find using steam makes it quicker

Thistly · 04/04/2016 09:26

Only iron what really benefits from it. I have stopped buying clothes that need ironing, and my girls have grown out of those lovely cotton summer dresses, so I am in a bit of an ironing holiday at the moment. I am awAre that it comes to an end with the, start of secondary school and blouses instead of polo shirts. I would like a special place to do my ironing. I live in a small flat so the ironing board is in the kids bedroom. It really puts me off ironing; it has to be done during school hours.

Thistly · 04/04/2016 09:29

Non tester by the way, with iron in the blink.

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 04/04/2016 09:45

I'm a non tester ..... I do my ironing in front of the TV and usually with all the windows open so I don't get hot and the stressed!!!!

• How did the Atomist Vapour Iron compare to your usual iron?

Once I got used to using it I loved it. You have to iron in a slightly different way to normal but when I got the hang of it I found it really easy.

• What did you think were the benefits of the Atomist Vapour Iron?

It's much quicker than my normal iron and I don't have to put any weight on the iron to get the creases out. It's also really helpful with it being transparent, it has stopped me ironing creases into my clothes!
• Did it make ironing usual items of clothing easier? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Yes, I iron shirts more than anything else. It took me a few goes to be able to iron without getting the items too wet with the vapour. I often had to press down to get creases out with my old iron and I don't need to with the Atomist. It glides over the garment ant the creases just disappear.

It is also smaller and less bulky than my other iron so that makes it easier to do shirt collars and round the buttons. It's much easier to hanover than my precious iron.

What did you think the benefits were of vapour over steam?

I don't get my glasses steamed up while ironing for a start!! When I used my steam iron it could sometimes cause the item to get soggy and because I had to press down on the clothes it could cause more creases than I had to begin with.

As I don't need to apply pressure to the Atomist this doesn't happen.

Why did you want to take part in this test and what iron did you previously have?

I wanted to try something to make my ironing easier. I do sometimes send shirts out to be ironed, the Atomist saves time and is easier to use so this will save me money in not having to pay someone.

My previous model is a breville extra steam 240w.
