This is the feedback thread for Mumsnetters who are testing out nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, with a friend.

Here's what Clairol say: “Find your true colour with nice'n easy. nice'n easy permanent colour cream gives colour so natural looking it's the UK's #1. Colour lasts up to 8 weeks and provides up to 100% grey coverage.
For first time colourers, we recommend nice'n easy no ammonia; a non-permanent hair dye without ammonia, giving you natural & healthy looking colour. It lasts up to 24 shampoos and blends away greys. We're really keen for Mumsnetters and their friends to have a hair colour session and share their feedback”

Testers, once you have tested the hair dye, here are some questions to get you started, but please feel free to add your own comments too:

  • What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
  • Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
  • Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
  • How easy did you find the application process and why?
  • How happy were you with the end result and why?
  • Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also share your before & after photos on this thread.

Everyone who gives feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

    Standard Insight T&Cs apply

    Thanks and Good Luck!

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
We both have dark brown hair with a bit of grey

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?

I chose Natural Medium Chestnut Brown, Colour Cream. My friend chose the Medium Brown, No Ammonia.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We helped each other. Her more than me as I'm terrible at colouring my own hair!

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
Straightforward and easy. I usually get my DH to help me with colouring my hair so he enjoyed the break. We had fun and helped each other out. The No Ammonia was especially quick and easy and my friend was very impressed by the short development time.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
Really pleased. Both of us were left with our grey covered and shiny, glossy hair.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely, the colour was great and my hair felt lovely. It gave me a much needed boost and covered my grey well.

I've been trying to add photos but it won't let me. I will try again later.

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?

Mine was blonde but with over an inch of roots showing and my friends was a mixture of different dark browns

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?

Both permanent, mine was SB1 summer blonde and my friends 5 (formerly 118) natural medium brown

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?

We both did our own hair as couldn't get together and sort out who looks after the kids

-How easy did you find the application process and why?

It's a very easy process, the box has detailed instructions but after 10 minutes or so I started to feel the emulsion dripping and the smell is rather strong too. There's enough to do rather long head of hair which was a bit of a surprise to my friend as normally she has to buy two boxes.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?

End result is brilliant for both of us, as it was easy to get the colour everywhere even without help neither of us had any blotches where the colour hadn't gone to

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would easily buy Nice'n easy in the future, it's no worse than the competitors and the selection of colours is good.

Not having much luck with uploading photos so missing out my friends before and my after photos

-What colour was your hair before dying?
Medium brown with more than a few grey hairs, especially on top of my head around my parting.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
Nice'n easy no ammonia 815RR Dark Mahogany

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
My daughter helped me colour my hair

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
Pretty easy, I've dyed my hair on my own before and it definitely easier with some help! I found the dye easy to mix up. Instructions are clear, although I did find the gloves are massive so a bit fiddly, but I do have freakishly small hands Smile

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
Vey happy, it has covered the grey really well, and the overall colour is lovely, I'm very pleased with it

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, definitely

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
Mine was light brown with a reddish tinge from a bad dye job at the hairdressers a few months ago. My sister's was a faded dark brown.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
We both used permanent natural dark brown (4).

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We did each other's hair.

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
It was relatively easy. We both used Vaseline to protect the skin. I had to correct a couple of bits around my hairline that my sister had missed - I think I could have done it myself quite easily.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
Happy - both of us have a nice, rich colour that is true to the pack. I thought mine was a little too dark at first, but I either got used to it or it has settled, I don't know which! However, with my long hair, I think I needed a little more dye to be fully even in the ends.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would, it was easy to use and not too messy. It gave a nice colour and hid greys and my gingeryness from my bad hair do a few months ago!

I tried to do this test with my sister. We both have mid brown hair, and both went for the no ammonia non permanent medium golden brown.

Unfortunately I reacted to the formula test on my arm, it went a bit red ( do have very sensitive skin, I have to be careful with washing powder etc!) so I did not use it on my hair.

My sister did not react, but did not want her photo taken.

I coloured her hair. It was very easy to do, no spills.

It looked really good afterwards, she still had natural looking tones.

She wants to see how it wears, but is definitely considering using it in the future.

What colour was your hair before dying? Red
And what colour was your friend’s hair? Mousy brown
-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose? We both used permanent colour , I used natural medium brown ( 5)and my friend used natural light blonde ( Sb5)
-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? We did our selves
-How easy did you find the application process and why? The colour blended easily and the texture wasn't very gloopy unlike some I have tried, my friend was very happy that there wasn't a very strong smell either.
-How happy were you with the end result and why? I wanted the red that was to fade away and dark brown to emerge and it did exactly that , my friend who was mousy brown with highlights wanted an all over Blonde effect and she was happy with end result .
-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? We would definitely buy again as we hit the results we wanted without colour going horribly wrong and it was easy to mix and apply .

What colour was your hair before dying? Light brown And what colour was your friend’s hair? Light brown
-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose? I chose the first (natural light brown) and my friend the second (light brown)
-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? We did our own
-How easy did you find the application process and why? Easy. We have done this before
-How happy were you with the end result and why? End result as expected
-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes we would.

I have posted before and after pics. It covered my grey well. the one thing I would say is that the colour always comes out darker, then lightens a bit after a wash. It is interesting to see the other FB posts on here, and I might be tempted to go for an even lighter shade if possible. All the lightest brown shades I have tried still seem to leave me with medium brown hair.

I also try to make full use of the conditioner afterwards till it's finished, which is a nice extra compared to other makes that only give you enough for one go.

While my friend was happy with her result, she would prefer to have more highlights in her hair, so was happy to try it on the basis that hers wasn't a permanent dye

What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
We both had light brown hair. I have stubborn greys at my temples and a few on my parting. My friend has no greys yet.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
I used permanent natural light brown no 6 and my friend used no ammonia medium golden brown.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We did our own hair.

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
We both found it very easy. I'm used to doing my own hair so had no problems. My friend had problems with her gloves easily ripping though.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
I think the end result is just "ok". I feel like the colour is slightly too blocky and hasn't done a good enough job of covering my stubborn greys at my temples. It's left them looking a little orange in tone despite leaving the colour on the grey for much longer. I really don't like this look, although I know that sometimes it can take a week or so for the colour to settle down and look it's best.
My friend's hair turned out much better using the no ammonia dye. The dye didn't smell as strong and the overall result looked more natural, although still a little too red tinted for our liking.
We both loved the conditioners that came with the dye. I know you can buy small bottles of the colourseal conditioner, but I would love it if a larger bottle was available to buy separately.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would. However I would be sure to choose only ash tones to try and avoid the red tinge that I was left with on my greys with the natural brown colour I initially chose.
My friend would definitely buy the the no ammonia version again as she has no greys to cover and it was a really easy way to give her hair a quick pick me up boost.

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
My hair was a worn, brown with old brassy highlights and more than a fair smattering of wiry greys.
My friend's was mid brown, also with a lot of grey

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
Permanent colour cream
Me: 5rb natural medium reddish brown
Friend: 5 natural medium brown

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
I did my own and my friend's

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
I found the application very easy. Straightforward,no prior preparation to hair.
I liked the consistency of the dye once mixed, it had a gel like appearance, almost like a serum. I also thought it had a pleasant aroma (for hair dye!)

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
I was very pleased with the end result. My hair was much shinier and the application was even all over.
There was a scary moment during the process where my roots appeared to have taken on the dreaded 'root glow'. It looked as though a thousand suns were setting on my scalp. Fortunately this dissipated by the time I'd rinsed it out.
I have received lots of compliments on my hair which has boosted my ego after months of bad hair days.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would definitely use it again because it has freshened up my hair, improved the appearance and made it easier to manage, thank you.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to test the hair dye as I couldn't tell from the packaging whether or not it contained ammonia (baby blonde). As my hair is quite dark at the roots (but highlighted elsewhere), I didn't want to run the risk of not lifting the roots, and sending the rest of my hair a ginger colour!

I did read the packaging quite carefully but couldn't find advice on this - perhaps something to consider?

My hair was originally ginger, but has faded over the years and is now naturally a greyish ginger. But I've been peroxide blonde for a couple of years, but haven't coloured it fir about 6 months.
My daughter applied for both of us (she's had two years hairdressing training), she was satisfied with the ease of use and coverage.
My daughter is a natural light auburn.
I used the SB1 summer blonde, my daughter used 8, medium blonde. Both contained ammonia.
I was pleased with mine, although not as light as I'm used to.
My daughter's hair colour took more on the ends.
We'd both use nice'neasy again.
I'm a bit puzzled by the SB1 though, on the box it says it provides 100% grey coverage, but also says not recommended for use on grey hair Confused.

-What colour was your hair before dying? Dark blonde (dyed)

And what colour was your friend’s hair?
Brown (dyed)

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
8A for me and 5RB for my friend

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We did our own in our own houses

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
Very easy instructions to follow. Would prefer better gloves - find plastic ones are flimsy and too big. Once mixed the dye was like a gel and was easy to apply. And a first for me no drops on the floor! The nozzle made it easy to get to the edge of the hairline and around the ears. Used all the mixture on my hair any longer than shoulder length and you would need 2 bottles to ensure even coverage

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
Very happy, lovely colour, even all over. Lovely and soft and didn't have the chemical smell that some dyes leave behind. Looks darker in photos but it's a really nice shade Smile

My friend loved it too. She also noted the lack of chemical smell.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes we both would. Easy to follow instructions, great coverage, lovely colour and lack of chemical smell. Just need to provide better gloves and it would be 10/10

What colour was your hair before dying? Mine was a reddy brown and my sister's was a mousey blonde

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
We both used the permanent colour, I was sent a dark brown and my sister received the light blonde.
-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? We had planned to do them together but ended up having to do them separately. We each did our own.
-How easy did you find the application process and why? The process was very easy and whilst the smell was quite strong I am used to that as I dye my own hair regularly. I have thick, curly hair and struggled with distribution as ideally I think I would have had to use two.
-How happy were you with the end result and why? Unfortunately in my case, the dye didn't distribute evenly over my hair due to it being quite long and curly/thick. This meant I had some old faded red still visible. I also felt it didn't 'shine' as much as my normal dye and lacked the vibrancy of my usual colour which has a hint of red. I felt the colour was a little dull.
My sister loved hers! She has very short hair and got a great colour. Not at all brassy but blonde and a lovely tone! I had hair envy!
-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? i personally wouldn't as would have to buy two packs for coverage but my sister is converted and loved the colour of her hair. She doesn't normally dye her own hair but now would based on this.

I AM NOT VERY SATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT.

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair? MY HAIR WAS BLONDE AND MY MUMS DARK BROWN.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose? I USED PERMANENT COLOUR IN LIGHT BROWN, AND MY MUM CHOSEN DARK BROWN.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? MY MUM DID MINE AND HERS AS WELL.

-How easy did you find the application process and why? VERY EASY, MY MUM ALWAYS DOES IT AT HOME SO IT WAS VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD FOR HER.

-How happy were you with the end result and why? MY MUM WAS SATISFIED - COLOUR IS GOOD TO COVER ROOTS. BUT MINE COLOUR IS AWFULL . SHOULD BE BRWON AND I HAVE SOMETHING LIKE STRAWBERRY BLONDE OR GINGER ON MY HEAD WRIGHT NOW. NOT SURE WHY THAT KIND OF COLOUR OCCUR. HATE IT, DO NOT SUIT ME NEED TO GO TO HAIRDRESSER TO CHANGE IT. THOUGHT IT WILL BE SAME AS ON PACKAGE BUT COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour? IT IS GOOD FOR COVERING ROOTS, BUT NOT IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR COLOUR. I WILL NOT GOING TO BUY IT AGAIN - WILL STICK WITH COLOURING HAIR IN SALON - MAYBE IT IS NOT CHEAP BUT AT LEAST I KNOW THAT IF I ASK FOR SPECIFIC COLOUR I WOULD GET IT. NO DISAPPOINTMENTS ANY MORE.

What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
I had an ash brown colour, my friend was my mother who had a light brown and grey colour

Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
We both had Natural Medium Brown, such a lovely shade.

Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We did each others, the way we always do.

How easy did you find the application process and why?
We found the hair dye simple to follow with the instructions for preparation. The application of the dye was simple and went quite a long way. (I have long thick hair.)

How happy were you with the end result and why?
I was really happy with the end result as was my mum. She was happy it covered all the extra greys whilst I was happy of the nice even coverage and shine.

Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would, it was a lovely application and didn't have any nasty smells to it. It covered our hairs well and was easy enough to apply.

Each did our own

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
Yes, both found it easy. It went on easily and didn't drip.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
I wasn't that happy - it was too orange for me. I normally use Vidal Sassoon mid cool blonde but thought I'd give this a go. Friend liked hers - it brought out the golden tones in her hair and really brightened it.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
