This is the feedback thread for Mumsnetters who are testing out nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, with a friend.

Here's what Clairol say: “Find your true colour with nice'n easy. nice'n easy permanent colour cream gives colour so natural looking it's the UK's #1. Colour lasts up to 8 weeks and provides up to 100% grey coverage.
For first time colourers, we recommend nice'n easy no ammonia; a non-permanent hair dye without ammonia, giving you natural & healthy looking colour. It lasts up to 24 shampoos and blends away greys. We're really keen for Mumsnetters and their friends to have a hair colour session and share their feedback”

Testers, once you have tested the hair dye, here are some questions to get you started, but please feel free to add your own comments too:

  • What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
  • Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
  • Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
  • How easy did you find the application process and why?
  • How happy were you with the end result and why?
  • Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also share your before & after photos on this thread.

Everyone who gives feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

    Standard Insight T&Cs apply

    Thanks and Good Luck!

What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
My hair is medium/dark brown with grey roots and my friend has light brown hair & grey roots

Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
Our colours were, myself -Natural Light Brown Permanent 6 and my friend had Natural Medium Reddish Brown 5RB

Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We coloured our own hair separately ....... both of us have been covering our grey roots for years now so very competent hair colourists Grin

How easy did you find the application process and why?
The application process is very easy my only complaint would be the gloves provided. They are too large and kept falling off my hands. Other hair colour suppliers provide gloves which are tight-fitting and much more comfortable to wear.
No stained bathroom sink which is always a plus and wipes easily from around hairline Smile

How happy were you with the end result and why?
Yes, my colour is very nice, a good medium brown colour. My friend loves the reddish tones that she now has in her hair.
Another friend commented yesterday how shiny my hair looked. She knows I colour it myself so I did explain that I had used a different brand.

Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, please consider providing better gloves. I realise they are disposable but its quite an ordeal if they don't fit correctly (perhaps I have small hands .....)
Personally I do dye my hair about every 5 weeks or so as the roots show very quickly, so will see how long the N&E lasts compared to other brands.

Thanks!

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? yes it had good coverage ( like i said i could only do half as i have very long hair) but it completely covored my friends and we loved how soft and vibrant our hair was.

My colour was light brown with some grey inside. I chose natural medium ash blond whilst my friend has tried the Medium ash blond.

My friend and I coloured our her by ourselves and it was really easy and mess free. The idea that it is without ammonia made me feel to look after my hair more. The results are good, the colour looks shiny and natural. I would definitely use Nice'n easy again.

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
Mine was blonde but needed the roots doing and my friend's was brown.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
Both, mine was SB1. I did not write my friends down but it was a reddy brown semi permanent.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?

I coloured my friend's and mine but she helped with the back of mine.

-How easy did you find the application process and why?
Very easy except with mine the smell was overpowering and made everyone gasp if they came into the room.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
I was happy and my friend was happy with the colour and the shine but she needed at least one, probably two boxes extra as her hair is so long.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes. It was easy to use and gave good results.

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair? Both of us a darker honey blonde, pretty much the same shade!

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose? We both I chose nice'n easy permanent colour cream, I chose the colour Natural Light neutral Summer Blonde, and my friend Rachel chose Natural light beige Blonde!

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? I have colourd my hair for years, so I did my own, and then did my friends! We had a bit of a wine sesh too it can't be denied! lol

-How easy did you find the application process and why? Ohh nice'n easy is exactly what it says on the box, nice and easy! Anyone could do this!

-How happy were you with the end result and why? My roots were coming in and my colour was fading a little, after using my summer blonde it looked perfect! My friend was really pleased too, she had never used a home dye kit before and was very happy with the silky results, she was worried that by using a dye her hair would be dry, but instead, she says her hair is now easier to style and her colour just glows!

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? Oh definitely! I love Nice'n easy! They always have great shades, are so simple to use, the conditioner is brilliant and really brings out the shine and its just a great home dye kit!

Thanks for picking me! xxx

Hi all - just a voice of caution.

I have used Nice and Easy for near on a decade and was very happy with it. I felt my hair was thinning due to my age (36) as it never really grew past mid way from chin to shoulder as was wispy at the ends.

For my birthday last June I was booked in for a tester for a proffedional colour and cut as a treat. At the tester session they did a strand test and my hair actually frazzled when they put the professional colour on my hair (priviously coloured by Nice and Easy) and they refused to touch it. So off I went to another salon and the same thing happened.

This band is known by hairdressers for damaging it so much another colour cannot not be applied for fear of extreme breakage.

So I've had a really short cut and growing out the box dye. It's not something id do again and my natural hair is in a much better stronger state.

Be careful!

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?

we coloured are own hair it was very easy as the application is very easy to use.

-How easy did you find the application process and why?

really good ! there was clear insructions in the box also the formula itself was fab no drips or spills.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?
i was very happy with the shade however i dont see it washing out as in the colur hasnt faded yet after around 8 shampoos maybe thats good as it has staying power !

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?

i would use this colour again as its an even shade and really close to what my natural brown is so thankyou for the opportunity xxx

Thank you for letting myself and my mum take part! Sadly we don't have photos as my dad took them then managed to delete them at the same time! I'm not even entirely sure how he did it!!

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?

My hair was a very light/mousy brown with a few blonde streaks in it. My mums hair was dark brown.

-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?

I used nice n easy no ammonia light brown. My mum used the permanent colour with red/brown.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?

I am as clumsy as one person can be so my lovely dad was roped in to dyeing both our hair ( the kitchen became a mini salon!)

-How easy did you find the application process and why?

As my dad is practically bald he has never felt the need to dye hair before but he found the instructions very easy to follow. The dye applied easily and had a lovely smell. It didn't drop everywhere.

-How happy were you with the end result and why?

I wasn't convinced that the colour would sit well on my very old streaks of blonde but it covered it all really well and my hair has a really lovely healthy colour to it. It has a really nice shine to it too.

My mums hair is beautiful and the colour gives a lovely red hint to it but isn't so bright that she's nervous about it.

-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?

We would both use nice n easy again, it applied well-looks great and it was a really fun family night too! If not purely for the fact of my burly Scottish dad being our hairdresser for the night!

What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
I'm 45 with dark brown hair which has more than a sprinkling of grey running through it unless it's dyed every six to eight weeks. I sometimes leave it longer of I'm busy but it makes me feel rubbish and o lack confidence if my hair is dull and muddy brown with grey.
My daughter is 22 and she has hair which is s bit darker than mine, she has just started to get the odd grey hair too......she blames me!!
Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
We both chose nice'n'easy no ammonia because I'm not keen on the permanent stuff, it's too harsh for my hair and if you have to dye it again for root growth anyway I don't really see the point.
I used 75 ash brown and my daughter chose 78 golden brown. Not hugely different but we wanted to freshen our hair and dye makes it glossy rather than go for something so different.
Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other?
We did it at the same time and did our own although we checked each other's to ensure we hadn't missed any bits.
How easy did you find the application process and why?
Really easy process, it didn't drip and was mess free. I always rinse mine off by having an actual shower, some people think that's weird but it means I can be thorough don't have to worry about drips and spills when leaning over the bath.
How happy were you with the end result and why?
I think both my daughter's hair and mine looked shinier and 'stronger', we were both v happy with the result. I had about five weeks grey growing through which doesn't really show on the photos but it has definitely got rid of those. My daughter is going to Dublin today with her boyfriend and was pleased to be going with her glossy hair.
Would you consider using nice’n easy colour again? If so, why? If not, why not?
We would both consider using the nice'n'easy no ammonia again, it had a pleasant smell compared to some other brands and didn't leave a mess, the grey has gone and our hair looks great.

I'm now going to attempt to attach photos which I've never done before........

Me: permanent: natural medium brown Sister no ammonia: ash brown.
We dyed our own hair - very simple procedure & application. Clear instructions. Quality gloves! Relatively little mess & dripping.
Both very happy - me no greys! Sister lots of shine! Both surprisingly natural looking colours.
Will both definitely buy in the future. No more salon prices! :-)
Will post pictures when I can - phone playing up at the moment!

-What colour was your hair before dying? And what colour was your friend’s hair?
My hair colour was a mahogany/red and my sisters hair was black with light brown/blonde highlights.
-Did you use nice'n easy permanent colour cream or nice'n easy no ammonia, and which shade did you/your friend choose?
Yes we both received 5RB Natural Medium Reddish Brown.
-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? We did it ourselves and didn't need any help.
-How easy did you find the application process and why? The application process was very simple and instruction leaflet was clear and easy to follow. It was mess free and very easy to apply.
-How happy were you with the end result and why? I really loved my results. It was quite similar to my colour i had before but it looks fresh now and has covered the few white hairs that were starting to make an appearance! My sister also loved her results. She didn't like her highlights because the hairdresser made it to light and they were starting to look blonde so she was very happy with the results. The nice'n'easy hair colour covered them up nicely.
-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? Me and my sister would both consider using the nice'n'easy colour again. We loved the results and how easy it was to apply. We even had colour left over in the bottle which never happens with other brands. We both have thick and quite long hair and struggle to colour the whole head with one package.

-Did you each colour your own hair or did you do it for each other? We did it for each other - much more fun and easier to make sure you get every strand.
-How easy did you find the application process and why? Really easy - instructions are clear and as long as you section your hair properly it is easy to make sure you get all the roots
-How happy were you with the end result and why? Yes we were both happy - my hair has gone a couple of shades lighter (it was quite gold before and now it is more yellow if that makes sense - this colour would be great for summer. My sister said her hair looked healthier and warmer.
-Would you consider using nice’n easy hair colour again? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes absolutely - My grey's are gone so I am Happy!

My hair: auburn- very faded.
Sister's hair- brown with some grey roots!
I used the colour cream and my sister used the no ammonia. Mine was mid brown and hers was dark brown.
We coloured our own hair.
The application process was really straightforward and east to do. The pictures were really clear.
We were both pretty happy. My hair looks really natural. It is a bit more subtle than I normally choose but it looks tidy and healthy. Hers is bolder (and I think the colour is richer than mine too!).
I'd use the no ammonia version again but would steer away from the one containing ammonia as it was pretty strong smelling.
