This thread is for the MNers who've been trying out the TomTom GO 5000.

Below are some questions to get you started but please feel free to add other comments too.

In terms of your first impressions...

  • What was your initial impression of the TomTom GO 500?
  • How easy did you find it to set up your TomTom?
  • What journeys have you made so far with your TomTom?

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

Thanks,
MNHQ

MN and TomTom have gone a bit quiet, heaven't they? When do we need to do more feedback?

Maybe they are busy making cases for all our TomToms...

lougle · 10/11/2014 19:38

I was wondering the same!

RunsWithScissors · 10/11/2014 20:39

I just posted on chat asking about when/how we are to do the next bit of feedback. Glad I'm not the only one wondering about this.

I managed to add a place to my places but how do you bring up my places to find these locations?

Tom Tom got stuck yesterday and wouldn't work but did so eventually. She did find us a good way to avoid a traffic jam yesterday.

very glad to have her.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 10/11/2014 22:41

If I say "Go to my places" or "display my places" the list of all the ones I've programmed comes up. I then have to say "number 1" or whatever, or "next page" if the one I'm on isn't in the top 4.

Annoying that it lists them in the order I input them rather than frequency of use, though.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 10/11/2014 23:39

Almeci you need to 'swipe' from right to left on the screen there are a few things there, including 'my places' :)

Have been using the TomTom for journeys to and from work and it has mostly been good, apart from not updating traffic jams quickly enough so it suggests random alternative routes even when the traffic jam has gone and has on occasion sent me along roads that result in right turns across very busy roads that end up taking me longer than the usual route!

One problem I have is that the 'report speed camera' option is not always available and I can't figure out why. During parts of my journey it's on but on other parts, including where there is a speed camera that's been there for years but is not picked up by TomTom, this option is unavailable. Also i can't work out if there is a shortcut to this option other than going via the three dots into the menu, which isn't great when you are driving and just want to hit a button quickly.

Also some roads a permanently shown as being slow or having roadworks (i.e. the A52 between Nottingham and Derby when it goes over the M1 at J25) but every time there don't seem to be any problems with the traffic. Presumably the updates will sort this out eventually?

Have got a couple of long trips lined up for the weekend so will see how it gets on getting us out of rush hour Nottingham on a Friday night.

Blondieminx · 11/11/2014 09:34

Well to be fair we have all been asking what to do next, it's not like we're unwilling testers is it Grin

Perhaps TomTom are busy making a software update to resolve some of the quirks we've found (in particular the report incorrect speed limit function which is very clunky IMHO!)

Having Serena on board is great. I bought her a hard shell case for £9 off Amazon btw!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 09:58

Maxi - there must be a shortcut version because it has popped up for me when I've been prodding the screen to try to get it to do something else! Grin. Unfortunately, that means I can't tell you how to do it, but prodding on the RHS could be a start!!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 10:01

Anne - I wonder if there's a way to select how they're shown? Mine are in alphabetical order. It ok, at least it's not Ranson like when they were added, but I'd like to be able to swipe them into the order I want. (I know I could 'fool' it by adding a's in front but I'd sooner not!)

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 10:03

Blonde - no, it's not. I stopped posting because it was starting to look like my personal thread! Blush Grin

Further mixed results for me. TomTom has been great for finding alternative routes when the traffic's bad, but sometimes it's a bit too enthusiastic. I was driving home one night, the Kingston Bridge if anyone knows Glasgow, when it directed me to turn around in the middle of the bridge. Apart from the three lanes of fast moving traffic on both sides, and the extra lanes of traffic joining, the central reservation might have made that a bit difficult. I do find it odd that when I'm driving on the motorway it often tells me to 'take the exit' when the route actually follows the road, and taking the exit would take me off. Bizarre.

Also, voice recognition has packed in. I've checked the settings and it's enabled, but it doesn't respond to the wake up phrase, and if I select voice control from the menu, I just get the spinning circle. I'm updating right now to see if that will help, but if not, MN, please can I have some advice?

The responsiveness of the touch screen is also a bit dodgy I think. It seems to be more accurate in terms of traffic delays and ETA on my drive home than in the morning. Maybe it's more of an owl than a lark...

IAmAPaleontologist · 11/11/2014 19:27

Suggestion: Find a way to make it only ask if we want an alternative route at the point at which a decision would have to be made (eg turning off etc). Today it was manically flicking between different routes every couple of minutes. Really, really, really, rather dangerously distracting. Then it calmed down and settled on only changing its mind a further 4 or 5 times on the way home. And after all that took me from traffic jam to traffic jam even though I know there are at least 2 perfectly good routes which, once through the initial bits of traffic, are on back roads etc with no traffic at all.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/11/2014 22:25

That's interesting, Chipping, I'll see if I can at least get them in alphabetical order.

For speed limit reporting I had to touch the speed limit symbol and it automatically gave me the option of reporting an incorrect speed limit.

RueDeWakening · 11/11/2014 22:33

That's handy to know, Anne - I couldn't work out how to do it, but it was telling us the limit was 60 on a road with clearly marked and multiple 40 signs up...good job it was daylight really.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/11/2014 22:58

That's what happened to me, Rue, and I just decided to try touching the 60 symbol and it came up with the option to report it and select the correct limit.

Marymaymay · 13/11/2014 19:58

It's doing a grand job in the country roads round here. It knows all the short cuts. As a local in a very popular summer destination I'm hoping not too many grocks get their hands on this, they'll know all our naughty summer short cuts!

MimsyBorogroves · 13/11/2014 22:27

Aha, didn't know how to report speed limit changes - thank you!

DoctorGilbertson · 14/11/2014 22:13

I think it needs a "it is 8am, raining, are you really sure you want to drive into the middle of Cambridge" alert. It is always touchingly optimistic about the ETA.

90 minutes today. Sigh. At least I get to vary the traffic jam that I sit in.

Although it did find me a good alternative that I didn't know on the way home a few days ago, so I am moderately converted.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 14/11/2014 22:43

I've found if I turn mine on in the morning and not tell it where to go it starts directing me to DD's school, and I can't decide if that's genius or creepy.

Bda it took you to Ikea on a Saturday and this is good?? You're nuts!! Grin

I can't wait for the one to open in Reading, but I wont be going on a Saturday, not ever!

What did you buy??

lougle · 16/11/2014 08:29

Thanks for the speed limit tip!

Since adding Stephen Fry's voice, Serena has disappeared from my TT. Perhaps she's sulking?

The address finder is hit and miss, I find.
