Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches provide drug free soothing pain relief from pregnancy related muscular back pain. Like an ice pack, but more convenient and easy to use, Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches work by cooling the skin and underlying tissue helping to reduce both pain and swelling.

Here's what Deep Freeze say: "Back pain affects three out of four pregnant women yet many areunaware of the risks of taking certain medication during pregnancy according to new research. But there is no need to grin and bear the muscular aches and pains of pregnancy as just over half (55%) of women currently do."

They go on to say: "The cryotherapy (cold cooling pain relief therapy) provided by Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patch provides fast acting, self-adhesive, cooling pain relief to the affected area for up to 3 hours."

So testers, please share on this thread your opinion on the following: all comments welcome!

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

Everyone who tests the product and adds feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win £250 worth of John Lewis vouchers.

Please note your feedback and comments may be used by the team at Deep Freeze on social media and elsewhere. New pregnancy symptoms, including backache, should always be discussed with your doctor or midwife.

Q1

I am currently breastfeeding a 6 week old and have suffered with back pain throughout the pregnancy. I wanted to try deep freeze as I am always willing to try new things to ease the pain!

Q2
I found the patch quite difficult to apply as it kept folding over itself. Once I had it on it kept slipping out of place. I think this maybe because it was positioned on my lower back which I was leaning against whilst breastfeeding.

Q3
Not really as I found the cold sensation horrible and uncomfortable. Sorry!

Q4
No as it didn't work for me.

Q5
I would recommend that they try as just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for someone else.

Q6
Not really value for money as oral painkillers are much cheaper.

I have been trying these for three nights now:

Q1/ I am breastfeeding alongside looking after a 2 year old. It isn't unheard of that I'll be carrying the heavy car seat with baby DS in it along with DD in the other arm and a bag. Along with residual aches from pregnancy and sitting on the floor bent over feeding DS at baby groups etc I often have a sore and stiff back by the evening. The pain runs along my bra strap.

Q2/ I found it quite easy to apply and it was stickier and easier to keep in place than I had anticipated. That said I did use it in the evening whilst watching TV. I don't know if it would stick as well if I had been more active. They lasted for the three hour slots I sat and used them for.

Q3/ I didn't find them as immediately as effective as a hot water bottle but they did relieve pain in time and the effects lasted longer than a hot water bottle.

Q4/ I think I would use them again.

Q5/ I would recommend them

Q6/ I think they are expensive when you consider you'd go through two boxes a week if using one a night. I would pay the quoted price but would expect a few more in the box.

Thank you for selecting me for this trial.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis. Currently 7 months pregnant with DC4 and been suffering from back pain for the last few weeks and sciatica for a few months.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last? Very easy to apply but I found that it kept peeling off which was very irritating.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains? Yes it worked well.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain? I'd be inclined to use them again but I'd only put one on if I was able to relax, otherwise I'd say it's a waste as if you're on the go they peel off.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers? I'd recommend but again only if you're able to relax with one on as they don't stick well enough to cope with being on the go.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money? I'd say it was too expensive and I'd only use them if I was really desperate.

Q1 I am 38 weeks pregnant and have been using the patches for 1 week. I have joint hypermobility which has been exacerbated by the pregnancy hormones and as a consequence have developed PGP At about 8-12 weeks and more recently at about 34 weeks, severe upper right back pain. The level of pain is pretty debilitating and overwhelming, and affecting my ability to rest and sleep. It also limits the physical activities I am able to undertake and am having to use crutches. the upper back pain is at its worst when sitting.

Q2 because of the position of my pain I have been unable to apply the patches myself and so my partner has had to do it for me. I found that it's effect lasted for about 3 hours.

Q3 my pain is more ligamentous than muscular but I did find that the patch provided some relief

Q4 I would be willing to buy the patches if required on an occasional basis but if they were required on a long term basis I would probably look for cheaper alternatives as to use on a daily or more frequent basis would become quite expensive.

Q5 I would definitely recommend them

Q6 the cost doesn't seem significant for occasional use or use for a few days, but I think for daily use over a prolonged period anything from a couple of weeks or longer, the cost is a little high.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.

I am breastfeeding and still have backpain/ spd from the pregnancy. I am in pain most days, some are worse than others.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?

It was ok, but as it's so big it got rumpled up a fair bit and creased.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?

It took the edge of the back pain.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?

Not sure, might need to try it on another area first.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?

Yes, as it's worth having a range of different things you can try if needed.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

I think they're a bit expensive at that price, and it would put me off buying them.

I love the patches!

Q1 I am pregnant and have been suffering severe lower back pain every day. The aches and pains have made me grumpy and short-tempered which I have tried really hard not to show but it's so difficult. Most movements seem to hurt whether it's bending down to pick up the food my youngest enjoys throwing or to pick up discarded toys or just standing at a supermarket checkout. I had similar pains in my previous pregnancies but got really frustrated buying products which didn't match their claims.

Q2 I found the patches very easy to apply and they lasted for about 3 hours. I began to feel better within 10 minutes

Q3 The patches have really helped relieve muscular aches and pains - better than other products I've used before

Q4 I will definitely buy and would strongly recommend them.

Q5 I would definitely recommend them to anyone unable or unwilling to take painkillers. I have already recommended them to friends and family.

Q5 The patches are quite expensive but because they are so effective I think they're good value for money. As they work so well and I get so many aches and pains, I'll be buying the bigger packs

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.

31 weeks pregnant, experiencing lower back pain+sciatica, some pgp and swollen painful ankles+feet. The pgp seems to mostly effect me at night, makes it difficult to turn over, get up, the rest affects me during the daytime.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?

It was fairly easy to apply to hips/ feet+ankles but I had to get help to apply it on to my back, I found on my back in started to work straight away but on my ankles it took about half an hour to feel the effects, the patches roughly lasted about 2-3hrs before becoming ineffective.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?

yes, definitely, especially on my feet, which are so swollen they crease and then the creases hurt like my skin is cutting into my skin, if that makes any sense whatsoever! the only relief I have had for my feet so far.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?

yes, I will use them again, this is a surrogate pregnancy so anything to make me a little more comfortable is welcome, they are less messy than using pain gels/creams.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?

I would, but I would tell them the cost as they are quite expensive and not in everyones budget, especially if your using them daily/more than one a day.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

Not really, they would be better priced at about half that, I was shocked tbh when I went into a chemist and enquired about the cost, again, I will use as babys mum and dad will pay for them out of expenses but I will be trying to save them for days when the pain is unbearable.

Q1 I am breastfeeding my 3 month old daughter and have suffered from neck and shoulder aches throughout pregnancy to now. I was also suffering from tension headaches and know that the shoulder/neck pain were linked with these. (These have recently been treated by an osteopath so I am now headache free!)

Q2 There was no way I could have applied the patch on my own as it was on my upper back, but my partner had no problem applying it onto me. It felt very cold to start with and then just wet and slimey sensation! It stayed in place ok, altho if I leaned against anything to feed it pulled a bit and dislodged. Otherwise it lasted for the full 3 hours but I didn't feel the effects for all that time.

Q3 Yes, I felt more comfortable with the patch on for the first 1-2 hours

Q4 I wouldn't buy the patches again for these aches as apart from the cost, I feel I should be continuing to address the cause of the problem instead of treating the symptoms. I will continue to use them now I have the pack though! And I would consider them if I get a new ache or pain.

Q5 yes I would say they are worth a try, definitely

Q6 it doesn't sound particularly expensive but when you consider they give just a short amount of comfort and a lot of mums are strapped for cash, then it is actually a lot. So no- not great value for money.

Thank you for this opportunity
(Are the two Q5's in the main post some sort of initiation test?! Hope I passed after being very confused for a while!)

Q2 - yes easy to apply and stay in place, lasted around 3 hrs.
Q3 - yes they did work for me and much prefer to taking painkillers
Q4 - yes
Q5 - the patches aren't very good value especially as they are quite small, I'd need two at a time to feel most benefit.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.
Nearly 6 months pregnant with first child, I have had back pain issues for the past 16 years (since I was about 14), I have neck pain issues from a car accident 7 years ago and being a keen life long horse rider I'm prone to aches and pains.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?
To apply at my desk without flashing my colleagues wasn't easy, but a quick trip to the loo in front of the mirror it was pretty easy to apply and the shape meant I could be pretty accurate as to which parts it covered

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?
Unlike deep heat which works instantly this took a few minutes to get going but actually once it kicked in it was much more effective that I though it would be, I'm a huge fan of 4head for headaches and this seems to work on a similar basis.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?
Yes, I think I will, they're pretty easy to apply, they don't stink to high heaven and they don't get grease all over your clothes. My other half is a heating engineer so sometimes gets tweaks from heavy lifting so I'll be using them on him next time he whinges.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?
Yes, most definitly.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?
Yes, this seems like a good price. I'll be stocking up on packs of four for home and office!

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.

Pregnant when I applied, now exclusively breastfeeding 4-week old DD2 and occasionally nursing 2.5yr old DD1. I have suffered from back pain much of my adult life -- big boobs on a small frame (and yes, I have been bra interventioned!) and poor posture probably being the cause. On a good day the aches and pains are a minor niggle, on a bad day it will drive me to distraction. As a busy (and breastfeeding) mother of two small children I don't feel confident taking heavy duty painkillers either.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?

I got my partner to apply the patch as I couldn't easily reach the point where my back was sore. He found it easy enough to do though and it stuck well. After an initial cold sensation, I couldn't feel it for about 15 minutes. The cold, tingly feeling then spread out across my back and lasted for around two hours.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?
Somewhat. It's hard to know whether I was just a little distracted from the nagging pain by having a new cold sensation to focus on. I think if I had caught the pain earlier I applied this patch at the end of a particularly bad day it might have been more effective.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?

I will certainly keep using the patches I have. I would consider buying them again.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?

Would need to be a bit more convinced by them before I gave them a wholehearted recommendation, but I would certainly make friends who are unable to take oral medication aware of these as an option.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

I think being able to buy single patches is a great idea, as you could always have one on standby. I would probably find it harder to part with over a fiver for a 4 pack as they are single use and this is a much higher price point than a few packs of ibuprofen or similar.

HQ: Would it be helpful to return with any more feedback as it comes to me? Don't want to clog up the thread.

Q1 I'm 22 weeks pregnant with dc 1 and have suffered from sciatica from 7 weeks which is getting better now but I still have to sit down every 10 mins or so to relieve the pain down my left leg

Q2 It was ok to apply (may be harder as I get bigger) It lasted a couple of hours or so

Q3 Yes it did ease the pain and helped me walk for longer which was great.

Q4 Yes I think I will and I'll put some in my hospital bag too after reading feedback on here

Q5 Yes I would - may even give them one of mine to try out if I'm feeling generous!

Q5 OK value I think if I was in loads of pain I wouldnt care about the cost but would be great if under a fiver for 4 or were resuable.

Has been great to be part of the tria - thanks!

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.
Pregnant with DC2 and currently under the care of an osteopath for pelvic and back problems unresolved from last pregnancy with SPD.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?
I found the patch easy to apply although I made DH try one too as he has a terrible back- he couldn't apply his own so I did it for him.
Mine lasted around 3hrs, maybe a little longer. DH pulled his off after an hour- he didn't like the sensation!

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?
Yes. TBH I didn't expect to like them as I tend to be a warm patch kinda gal, the cold worked really well and has definitely helped with the weather!

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?
Yes, definitely. I think they may prove a necessity throughout this pregnancy if the last one is anything to go by.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?
I would certainly mention it to them as an option.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?
I do think they are a bit pricey considering they only last 3hrs or so. However, they are handy to chuck in the bottom of your handbag to have just in case (you can tell I was in brownies can't you?! - Always be prepared!!)

Thank you for choosing me for the trial- much appreciated.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.
I am breastfeeding and very averse to taking medication even when I am not. I have suffered with back ache for as long as I can remember. It is always worse while I am cosleeping and carrying around a baby/toddler for hours every day.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?
Tricky to get it placed on my lower back- needed help. It started peeling after and hour or so. I think it may have held longer if it was placed slightly lower with my waistband across the middle of it.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?
Yes, it did feel like the aching was reduced. Very odd sensation.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?
The thing that would put me off using them long term is the price. Love the idea but would imagine needing a couple of patches a day, every day and the cost would soon mount up. I haven't experienced a really bad day pain wise since having the patches but am not convinced they would be enough to cope with the pain but would happily give them a try and use them on the occasions where the pain is increased.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?
Yes

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?
No- As a one off I wouldn't mind paying those prices but as a regular alternative to medication, they are far too expensive. I would look to spend £4 for a 4 pack.

Q1 I am pregnant currently, only 14 weeks but this is my 3rd pregnancy in quick succession (and 5th overall) so I'm really feeling the effects on my (nearly 40 year old) body. I am suffering particularly from lower back pain which is worse when sitting or lying for any length of time.

Q2 I did not find it very pleasant to apply - it was very 'floppy' and hard to position as it kept sticking to itself. The initial 'cold' feeling lasted for about half an hour but I did continue to feel the benefit for a further couple of hours.

Q3 Yes, it did - I found it very soothing and more beneficial than paracetamol (as well as quicker acting). I'm not sure if you are supposed to but I also used one on my head (avoiding eye area) for a headache and it worked really well.

Q4 Yes, I would definitely buy them again for muscular aches and pains.

Q5 Yes, I would recommend them.

Q5 I think £1.65 for a single patch is a bit steep and I probably wouldn't use them regularly at that price but for one off aches and pains I might buy a pack of 4.

Q1 I'm 24 weeks pregnant and I've had back pain since around week 15, the only thing that helps is swimming and some active days by the evening my back pain returns and I find it hard to walk/sleep/ get comfy. I wanted to try the patches because the referral for physio is taking so long. it also means I can manage the pain 'as and when' so on good days i don't need to bother and bad days it's instant relief.

Q2 Although my pain is lower back I've had no problems applying the patch even without a mirror. Being careful it hasn't rolled up and it's only come unstuck once and went straight back on.

Q3
Yes, instant relief from the cooling and it seemed to ease it over time. I've been putting on about 30 minutes before bed so I can sleep.

Q4
Yes, I particularly like being able to keep one or 2 in my bag or desk for if/when I need it.

Q5
Yes, although it's never been the main reason for me, I like that I can feel something happening rather than waiting for drugs to work.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?
It's expensive and at first I thought 'yowsers!' but, I'm pregnant, I'll do what I can to make life easier. I spent £10 on nausea relief acupuncture bands without blinking because when you want the discomfort to stop and you'll do/pay anything. For me, I'm not wearing them every day so it's not a huge cost.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.
I'm breastfeeding. I wanted to try the patches because I try really hard to avoid taking any medications and I often get lower back pain. I'm hoping to get pregnant again, so was interested to try it out for when I will only be able to take paracetamol as I found my back pain much worse during pregnancy. It was better if I didn't move around too much. I was constantly aware of trying not to dislodge the patch.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?
I thought it was going to be much trickier than it actually was to get the patch onto my back. It was easier to get someone else to stick it on, but I managed fine by myself too. It lasted a couple of hours.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?
Yes. I definitely noticed an improvement.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?
I would definitely continue to use them. I'm not sure if is buy them though. I don't think I could justify the cost.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?
Well, they definitely work and it's easier than holding a hot/cold water bottle onto your body.

Q5 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

Q2. Easy to apply, didn't adhere brilliantly though, started coming up at sides, lasted around an hour.

Q3. It did a little but honestly speaking an ice pack would have been better.

Q4. I would use if I was out and about and didn't have access to ones in my freezer, handy for that but if at home I'd use freezer ones I have (which also can be heated).

Q5. I would suggest as a back up for if out and about for occasional use but generally would recommend ice/ heat pack that can be reused.

Q1 Please say whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding etc and why you wanted to try the patches. Please describe how the muscular aches and pain affect you on a day to day basis.

I am 36 weeks' pregnant and get (sometimes severe) lower back ache on a daily basis, mostly when I stand for more than a few minutes at a time.

Q2 Please describe the application of the patch- how was it to apply? How long did it last?

Applying the patch wasn't too bad. It's a bit flappy, so was a touch difficult to control, but I managed to get it on in the right place.

Forgot I was wearing them and I accidentally peeled them off when undressing about 4 hours later.

Q3 Did the patch help relieve muscular aches and pains?

The patch didn't seem to do much while I was still standing up, but once I sat down the pain seemed to go more quickly than it does when I'm not wearing a patch. Felt soothing.

Q4 Do you think you'd buy the patches again or continue to use them if you had a similar muscular ache or pain?

I'd potentially buy them, but I would save them for when the pain was exceptionally bad.

Q5 Would you recommend them to friends or relations who are also pregnant or breastfeeding or unable to take oral painkillers?

I would recommend them.

Q6 Deep Freeze Pain Relief Cold Patches cost £1.65 for a single patch and £5.49 for a 4 pack: do you consider this to be good value for money?

I think that's quite expensive and prohibitive if you're on a limited budget, especially. I would have to be in exceptionally severe pain to warrant spending that much.

Am currently 32 weeks with dc2. Have a dd 2.2 and chasing her around all day is playing havoc with my back. Don't have good posture anyway and have suffered back ache since falling pregnant with her. Also potty training so lots of time spent bent over.

Patch was ok to apply. Bit hit and miss as very floppy and hard to check you'd got it in the right place but not complicated. Didn't stay on long at all. Peeled and moved as I did. Don't have much time just to lie or sit down plus I can't lay on my front now Sad so meant I was always leaning on the patch which didn't help.

I think the patch eased my back a bit but not as much as I'd hoped. I found the aches were back shortly after removing the patch.

I will use the rest of the box and may pass a few on to family to try but I wouldn't buy again. Was disappointed as had high hopes for them.

Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Just don't think they're effective enough and they're more of a pain to wear. They also smell ridiculously strong which doesn't help with pregnancy nausea. They made my clothes feel wet and made everything I wore smell.

I wouldn't consider them a good price at all. I'd consider them a waste of money I'm afraid.
