This is a thread for the 50 Mumsnetters who attended the Happy Height Day at THORPE PARK Resort. Thanks for going, and we hope that you and your family had great day!

Here's what THORPE PARK Resort say: "We see so many excited kids every year who have just reached 1.4m and are now tall enough to have the ride of their lives. At THORPE PARK Resort we're championing this achievement with our Happy Height Day, and celebrating the moment these kids experience a whole new world of thrills!
Whilst we love seeing these kids giddy with excitement to ride on Stealth for the first time, with over 25 rides and attractions throughout the Park and with a new ANGRY BIRDS Land opening in May, there really is so much to keep the whole family entertained. And that includes those under 1.4m"

Below are some questions for you to answer, but do feel free to add any other comments you or your family may have.

Please remember to also write a review of your day on the MN review area here

  • Who was in your group and how old are the children?
  • Have you been to THORPE PARK Resort before, if so, when?
  • What was your, and your family's, overall experience of Happy Height Day?
  • What were your/your DCs highlights of the day?
  • Which, if any, attractions/ rides would you most recommend to parents with children who have just reached 1.4m in height?
  • Overall, would you recommend THORPE PARK Resort to your friends and family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also upload any photos of your family enjoying their day out THORPE PARK Resort to this thread. Please note photos may be used by THORPE PARK Resort on Facebook, their website and possibly on other marketing material.

For those of you who did not attend Happy Height Day, what makes the ultimate fun day out for you and your family? Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win THORPE PARK Resort ANNUAL PASSES for a family of four worth £196

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

DonutWinners · 23/03/2014 07:28

We did get our annual passes at the end of the day when the queues had gone from the annual pass building. We also asked if we could upgrade to Merlin passes, which we do plan to do in future at a cost of £50 extra per person.

LCHammer · 23/03/2014 07:52

Quick place marking for later when I can copy & paste. A great day!

TheHumancatapult · 23/03/2014 07:54

oo doughnut that's interesting did they say how to upgrade ?

TheHumancatapult · 23/03/2014 08:01

Btw if Thorpe park read these .Drew who was manager at Bbq calypso we are coming back In May and will be looking see if you been able get your boss to take it on board what was talked about Grin

DonutWinners · 23/03/2014 08:04

We could have upgraded straight away, but we decided to think about the options first. We can upgrade at any Merlin group from what the lady told us. I have also investigated our tesco points and am wondering if we can use these too for the remaining amount to pay - have sent an email to Merlin, and will let you know developments!

DonutWinners · 23/03/2014 08:05

Human - I just looked at the Thorpe Park Facebook page and you can write reviews there too.

TheHumancatapult · 23/03/2014 08:13

Ty Doughnut .
Am going try write to Merlin also who own the parks .Florida to far and to expensive to go for my adrelin fix on roller coaster
will also try dig find out more on h&s side and evacuation procedures

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 23/03/2014 08:13

The ultimate fun day out is quite a challenge in the Potato household: this one likes rollercoasters that one likes boat trips, this one likes hillwalking that one likes museums, this one likes picnics that one likes restaurants (plus this one's dairy-intolerant that one's a fussy eater!).

So the ultimate day out for us is to a place where there is more than one aspect and this one doesn't have to do only what that one likes, and that one doesn't have to get bored or frustrated while waiting for this one.

TheHumancatapult · 23/03/2014 08:14

Then maybe be joining my dc on rides who seem have same thrill streak as me .Who did really enjoy the park

  • Who was in your group and how old are the children?
Me, my Dh, my 8yo ds and my 11 yo dd.

-Have you been to THORPE PARK Resort before, if so, when?
Yes, a few times but not for years.

-What was your, and your family's, overall experience of Happy Height Day?

We enjoyed the idea of celebrating your height. My dd has always been tall for her age and her height gets mentioned negatively every day. It was really good celebrating her height and the benefits that being tall at Thorpe park brings!
Being 1.4m really opened up so many rides for my dd ~ she was delighted.

  • What were your/your DCs highlights of the day?
Our whole day was a highlight to be honest. We enjoyed the excitement of walking to the front of the queue and would certainly invest in a fast track ticket when we visit again. My ds (8) really enjoyed 'x' and the rhumba rapids. My dd enjoyed all the rides but particularly stealth and swarm.

-Which, if any, attractions/ rides would you most recommend to parents with children who have just reached 1.4m in height?
We thought inferno was excellent. It was exciting and fun to go on but not too scary so would be a good starter for a newbie 1.4m child to try.

  • Overall, would you recommend THORPE PARK Resort to your friends and family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?

We had a fabulous day at Thorpe park. We would certainly recommend Thorpe park to friends and family. We thought it was exciting enough for children (and adults!) Over 1.4m but there were also enough gentle but fun rides for the more nervous child or younger child. This visit has changed my perception of Thorpe park as I had come to believe that this park was for older teenagers and adults only.
We thought the park was clean and saw cleaners working all day picking up litter to keep the park clean.
We felt really welcome at the park and thought the staff were enthusiastic and family friendly. In the 360 grill restaurant the children were spoken to and treated nicely which made us as adults feel happy and relaxed.
The staff took time to ask how our day was going and what rides we had been on. They also recommended their favourite rides which added to the day for us.
Thank you mumsnet and Thorpe park for an amazing opportunity ~ we cannot wait to go back to see angry birds land and further visits. I am now off to share the stories of our fun day on social media to spread the word! [Smile]

- Who was in your group and how old are the children?
Me my adult dsx2 my dd 12 and my toddler who came in free.

- Have you been to THORPE PARK Resort before, if so, when?
No but my ds2 had and is a roller coaster junkie so was looking forward to trying out swarm.he came last year on the opening day of Saw.

What was your, and your family's, overall experience of Happy Height Day?
i thought it was extremely generous and loved the little bag of extras especially the ponchos and angry bird.
As a large family (I have five children all together) we usually have to save money by taking food so it was such a lovely treat to have the park pounds and stop for lunch.
Obviously a massive bonus to have the fast pass too, that seemed to work really well, my only gripe was that as we had four passes all on one ticket it meant that we couldn't split up and do different rides.
I had a parent pass which I don't think was advertised very well but which is helpful.

I would like to have seen more signs around the park, pointing to the different rides and toilets/restaurants there are none and I found myself going the long way round and getting lost, I found the staff very helpful when I asked the way though although my boys thought that some of the staff of the rides were a bit miserable.

There was about one hand drier working in the whole park.

There really isn't much for little ones at all. I can't complain because dd was free at under a metre but another 4cms and I'd have to pay and even then there were about 3 things she could go on due to the height restrictions.
Even the TEACUPS were for 1.1 metre which I find ludicrous in a park full of white knuckle rides.
Thinking I'd pay for a treat for her I got her face painted, the girl was new and very limited as to what she could paint so dd chose a simple rabbit face which the girl just about managed with a little guidance from me.
I was shocked to pay £6 for this, that is a lot if you are not going to get professional face painters to do spectacular faces.
I would have liked areas for her to play in while we waited for the older children such as a little sift play where I could have a coffee, I'm sure the beach area will be great when we go there in the summer.
I also felt there was a distinct lack of family rides for us to all go on, she wasn't allowed in the raft slide and there was nothing such as "pirates of the Caribbean" or similar.
This was disappointing for the little one as she wanted to go on stuff with her siblings.

The worst thing for us was the rides keep getting closed, we drove 2 hrs to get there early and they rushed to go on the big rides, four times they were in fairly long fast track queues for swarm, nemesis and saw and were nearly at the front when the ride was closed. This is annoying as it wastes time but also the ride was often going again a few minutes later, why not give the option to let them wait in their place?
Also why are the rides breaking down all the time??
On one of the rides they closed the fast track queue' why?
They didn't get a go on saw in the end which is disappointing when you come a long way.

I do sound like a right moaner but I wanted to tell the truth, we had a fabulous time and are very grateful but I'd only bring the smaller one in the summer, it is more geared up for older children which I think you should make clearer so as not to be disappointed.
And please out some signs in for dozy people like me.

- What were your/your DCs highlights of the day?
Eating in park rather than eating my soggy sarnies.
Getting a go on swarm at the end, my dd was terrified but did it and is still going on about it. They loved swarm said it was amazing.
Having a day all together was lovely as we don't get to do that much,we will be doing it again thanks to the annual pass.

- Which, if any, attractions/ rides would you most recommend to parents with children who have just reached 1.4m in height?
Dd is just at that height but is very brave so I think you have to let them watch them first to decide, I'd say for the. To so daring, there was plenty to do stil, even I managed the water rides, we were extremely grateful for the ponchos, highlight of the day was it blowing up and completely covering my face as we walked along.

- Overall, would you recommend THORPE PARK Resort to your friends and family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend it to a family of thrill seekers but not for people with small children or big age gaps, it has a remarkable amount of thrill rides so it's definitely the place to go if you like those.
I lo be the look of the beach area and maybe angry birds will be better for younger ones so I will possible be recommending it for younger ones then.

Thanks you Thorpe park and Mumsnet, we are very grateful for a lovely day out.

For me the ultimate fun day out is when the whole family enjoy themselves so there should be fun stuff for adults, children and babies!

MrsSippie · 23/03/2014 09:47

Marking for later when I can get photos on! our only problem (and that was us!) was that we got hopelessly lost on the way Blush. took us 4 hours instead of two Grin

TheHumancatapult · 23/03/2014 09:52

one small thing after got through gates you are funneled over the bridge .This in summer could be chaos as its probably no wider than a single lane on a road add in buggies and small children

. Also the hotel will feed into this (ps can we have drop kerb for pedestrian entrance to hotel of bridge noticed not one yesterday )
maybe wider bridge needed ?
